I am so unhip and lame that I don't really know a thing about Tom's other than that once upon a time they posted hardware reviews that were marginally useful. Mainstream vs. Xtreme, huh? Is there bad blood? I like XS and especially F@H/XS so it's all good. Every team we pass is more glory for the team and more science for all

Yeah at the end of the day friendly competition is about the science, The results go to one lab, the project overall is is exciting and interesting in and of itself.

As to Toms > well we don't bash other sites at XS. There's no bad blood, they just have a habit of misguiding the starting out enthusiast in the opinion of some of the savvy computer builders here... After all, when your revenue is derived from advertising, you have to keep the advertisers happy.

What's your folding ID? Welcome to the team!
    Thanks

My first WU should be going through in the next hour or 2, my folding id is glenbuck1914.

Hopefully I can get a few more rigs running in work and bump it up even more, even if it's only for a short while.

just set up the SMP client on my main rig after I reinstalled windows vista as I had driver problems and it took apart my RAID ... but anyways I am all good now and have a dedicated cruncher that I have left on for a long time ~ 20 WUs ~ and will be putting a SMP client on it

Just checked out FAHMON and it is a sweet app!

    Thanks for the welcome guys!
As I promised, I'll set up a dedicated cruncher...It's not much, I came up with a Duron at 850 MHz (will oc it, maybe I'll reach a GHz) and with 128 MB of SDRAM Please don't laugh guys
Since I am going to high school, I don't have a sallary or a regular income of cash, so this is the best as I can do for now. Also, I'll have the main rig crunching, but it's not always available for crunching 24/7.
I'm wondering, will the Duron even run Folding@home? It doesn't have SSE instructions I think :/

I also promise that the 24/7 crunching rig will be updated, I don't know when, but I'll try to beef up that setup.

Hey swarm! I'm not gonna laugh at all. When I first started crunching it was my main PC then I added my first dedicated cruncher later on - a 750MHz P3. We all start somewhere and everything is welcome

The Duron should run it fine, I ran F@H on a duron for a long time myself as well (was cruncher #2 for a bit). Never any trouble crunching. The duron does have SSE, just no higher levels like SSE2 and so forth.

    Thanx Sparky!
I see that you guys have even more than one cruncher, usually very fast and formidable machines. So a Duron is a laugh when compared to you guys and to your rigs
The crunching rig will be online in a week or so, because I have to clear some space for it (I don't have any space in my room to put a hard disk drive, not to mention an entire rig but all the hardware is here, but it's not yet connected and set up together), install the OS, overclock and run stability tests, and so forth. You know how it goes and school is a pain in the neck, so it is slowing me down a bit.

Welcome to the team, it's not about the rig, it's putting them to good use is all. I'm folding on some antique hardware here myself until I feel I am knowledgeable enough about the "scene" here again to make some more choices. All are welcome and appreciated.

Again, we all start somewhere. Took me quite a while to work up to where I am now - and then when you think about it a bunch of old s754 and s939 single cores isn't really all that formidable anyway My "army" started with my PC and that P3 750MHz, then it slowly grew to consist of a duron, an athlon t-bird (still has one of those actually), and a couple more P3's.

If you have any questions on anything at all - or just want to throw a few smart remarks at any of us - feel free to post up

Hey dafeeessh - you can restart the client with the -configonly flag to set our team number, which is 36362:

    > by editing the properties of a shortcut to it
    > or you can rerun the setup from the command prompt like so:

Now restart the client in your normal way, and next time a unit completes it will be submitted for XS You might want to look into the windows SMP client, or running a few more vanilla clients - they are pretty good at getting out of the way when a game needs your CPU I find.

I joined the team a while ago. I'm folding 24/7 on an iBook G4 and a Dell Latitude D600 w/ a Pentium M. Is there any way I can make either of them fold faster?

The easiest way provided you haven't already to make them fold faster would be to use the console client instead of the graphical client.

Just a question, How much does the console client improve performance by compared to the graphical?

The graphical takes some CPU cycles to produce the graphics, so there is a tad bit of a slowdown from that. Also the console allows more than one client to run (if you are on a multi-core setup) and can use some extra configuration flags to "possibly" help boost performance a bit (depends on a lot of variables).

    Hey guys,

my 8800 GTS just joined the team
Still running WCG on all the other cores though, and I'm afraid that won't change, HCC is my top priority. But since the GPU was sitting there idle all day long, I figured might as well let it crunch.
