sorry to bump this, but I have a question.
I was reading a review of the XFX 780i at this link.

    http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid...e=expert&pid=5

There is a CPU N/2 option in the bios that allows another .5 to be tacked on to the multiplier.

I am not sure if that is an exclusive on the 780i. There has been some debate over 8500 vs Q9450. The problem with the 9450 is its 8 multiplier. However, will the CPU N/2 option work with a quad and make the effective multi 8.5?

If so, then overclocking the q9450 will be a tad easier correct?

    q9450
    possible?
    8.5 multi x 471 FSB = 4003.5 Mhz

    normal
    8.0 multi x 500 FSB = 4000 <--- difficult to do, I presume

a .5 increase on a 8500 could make it go sky high too.

If you think that you can add .5 multiplier to the Q9450, you're wrong.
    Q9550 has a multiplier of 8.5 Q9450 8.0

Then what does the CPU N/2 option do? Or does it only work with the current 65nm chips?

As you can read, it's for the q9550 to use the 8.5 multiplier.

Nope, this was anounced a couple weeks ago without any indication of a release date.

Which is kind of lame as this sounds like a good design and I know more then a few of us are waiting for it.

Still trying to find good results here of RETAIL Quad Core 68x0 chip. Seems to be a lot of talking in circles about dual cores. Some of us gamers have no need for a Quad on this SLI board.....

Ok, it seems that my ISP was having some issues and pictures were being stripped from the forum. That made it look like the pencil mod post was a dead one, but i see now.....
The picture shows the resistor as a 100K ohm resistor. I understand the point of a pencil mod is to try and lower that resistance by a certian amout/degree. What is the target resistance we're looking for there?
I've measured mine and it is dialed to 100K. So I just need to know what I'm trying to tune it to with the pencil lead.

I just finished modding my 780i. And by mod I mean getting it to run under boiling. An out-of-the-box test run had the MCP (southbridge) running at 90C. It went as high as 96C while I was setting up the BIOS.

Apparently, nvidia has a brilliant heat management strategy for their MCP chips which involves tons of thermal paste, and foam heat pads. Except, the foam isn't supposed to be a heat pad. After taking off the MCP 'sink, removing the misplaced foam spacers, bending the heatsink so it was flat and flush, reapplying a reasonable amount of thermal paste, and painstakingly reattaching the MCP heatsink, I am now running between 60 & 70 wishing for a LC solution.

And from what I'm reading at the evga forums, I'm not the only one who got a board where the foam spacers were misplaced and making contact with the northbridge and southbridge chips.
i have watched mine spike as high as 106c....

what is the MCP, and is that the small black heatsink on the top of the board near the cpu? and if so...any alternatives to cooling this are? (air cool)
what about gpu heatsinks? can they be used in this area ?
