Dudes I'm not an expert, but I consider myself a suffered and experienced guy who learned his lesson, when it comes to BSOD's. I've been investgating this problem, specially with games for quite a long time, and thank god I've never had one after I did extensive researches and narrowed the problems, EXCEPT if I'm pushing (overclocking) my hardware to the limits.
Please read this, it might help you. It'sa complete thread, not very long, but it will give you an example on what I'm about to say.
http://www.ngohq.com/graphic-cards/1...-death-et.html
I had my experience with the P5W DH Deluxe, my former mobo, and what I can say is read very well the specs on the Asus site.
On the manual, and on the ASUS site,The P5E3 Deluxe says it can run memory at *1600Mhz where the * stands for overclocking mode.
Although this motherboard supports 1600Mhz FSB, it it makes it on overclocking mode only.
On the paper and officially this motherboard and overall the X38 chipset supports up to 1333Mhz FSB.
Asus indeed added support for 1600Mhz, but officially it's the X48 chipset that support those frequencies.
Believe me when I say I've learned from my headaches when pushing other motherboards.
In some cases the combination of MOBO+CPU+Memory can be stable at @1600. And in some other combinations it simply won't, and you can expect a lot of BSOD.
Specially even more if you are populating the 4 existing ram slots of the board. Let's say 4x1GB.
So I suggest not to lie to ourselves on this. Running your sticks @ 1600 is very good and achievable in some cases, but I repeat this motherboard was designed to reach 1333Mhz.
Pushing 1800Mhz on this baby, is playing lottery, it would or wouldn't work on your specific configuration, CPU batch, etc. But to ask for stability is is asking too much, specially when on the paper this motherboard only goe up to 1333.
Other thing is what ASUS marrketing team can say or BS.
If for some reason it doesn't work @1600Mhz, it is simply bad luck, or bad airflow, or bad cooling, an insufficient PSU or many other factors. If you are in the need to lower the specs to the maximum (1333Mhz) and it works stable, then be happy, your rig is working fine.
Please rememeber:
On P5E3:
MAXIMUM FSB= 1333Mhz. (You can held accountable ASUS if you're having problems at those speeds)
OVERCLOCKING POTENTIAL= 1600Mhz. (play lottery you are on your own, and only real support for you is forums like this)

Yes i knew it was all too good to be true! i was stupid to believe it. I think i'm gonna try to run the same setup you have, i'm gonna settle with 1.6Ghz for RAM .... how much of a diff are we talking about between 1.8Ghz and 1.6Ghz and 4Ghz processor?.
and I'm glad we can come here and discuss the problems we have with these hardware.. thank you all of you guys!

Thanks for the infornatuve post Oscar![]()
I had no end of problems getting my P5E3 to even run @ 1333Mhz with 4Sticks of CL7 1600Mhz RAM, in the end Patriot said I would need between 1.80-1.90V on the memeory (which is rated to use 1.80V for a 2x1GB kit)
I did that and now I am happy @ CL6 (6-6-6-15 @ 1333Mhz) With the AI Clock Twister @ Strong and AI Transaction Booster = 2
1.90V is stable @ 1600Mhz CL 7-7-7-18 (rated speeds) but with AI Clock Twister set to Moderate.
I think that is the best I can get out of 4 sticks in my opinion.
I'm still waiting for ASUS to release a proper QX9650 BIOS for the vanilla no bells, no deluxe and no Wi-Fi whistles P5E3 as I am on 0703 but ASUS' site says 0704 is required for QX9650. I mailed ASUS and they said the BIOS is in testing.
By the way, thanks everyone for the info in this thread as it helped a lot. I almost let Patriot fob me off and run @ 1066Mhz 7-7-7-20!
But you guys gave me the energy to cary on and now Patriot admit 4 sticks need a bit more voltage
John
the most likely scenario here is that the issue is from 450MHz FSB on quads guys rather than memory not being able to do what it's rated for
stick a dual core in there and see for yourself....
450 is not an easy FSB for quads and not all CPUs will be able to achieve that stably
i think it's important to listen to advice your piers give you but that is only guidance. You shouldn't make any conclusions until you fully test all the options yourself depending on how important it is to you and how much you want to put into it. When i read your AI Booster comment for example i wondered if you actually tested your system to see what OC level is faster. How do you know how much Moderate or Strong level will impact your performance......test it out first before you settle for one over the other because in my experience you settled for a slower overall OC

so i kept the same timing and DRAM command rate at Auto... i got prime stable for 3 cores.. i couldn't even get 1 core stable before with Command rate 1N... played games for an hour with no crash (knock on wood)... i think i will stick with 1.8Ghz for the RAM until it corrupts my Windows that is.![]()

That is very true Dinos![]()
I'm sticking at the 1333Mhz setting which is slower than 1600Mhz setting due to this problem I have discovered which effects a few of the QX9650 CPU's out in the wild
We have a discussion going on here Temperature reporting problems with QX9650
We have yet to decide whether the 45nm have diode problems or require a microcode update for temperature monitoring to work correctly over the 4cores. Until this is sorted I am hesitant to overclock uncase I burn it out![]()
Thanks for your advice![]()

I wonder if there is an issue with Corsair ram :|
I have the 1600C7 7-7-7-20 @ 1.8v modules and get many crashes. Tried at many different frequencies, same results.
However, I have noticed since I bumped the voltage closer to 1.9, I have not awoke to a BSOD in 2 days. Maybe there are Memory Voltage issues, I know in the last bios the memory voltage was totally broken. I have to confirm what change I made though that finally brought stability.
JohnZS: Are you saying that you believe the 10c difference many people have seen across the 2 separate cores is a reporting bug? I know I have 2 cores that will hit 70c while the other 2 rock a cooler 60c, but I assumed this was manufacturing differences between the 2 cores or even contact to the HSF.
Prime fails to me too..also i get some random mouse freezes in idle mode ..![]()

Hi Nitroburn
Yep I think it is some sort of Tdiode or BIOS related issue as there is a large difference in temperatures between cores 1+2 (both 31 or 32C) and cores 3 and 4 (both 52 or 53C) the temperature range difference decreases at maximum load to around 10C difference.
On another note for people who have the vanilla non deluxe P5E3 I would stay away from BIOS 0808
Although this BIOS did add 0.5x multiplier support for QX9650 it also busted my RAM's compatability and so I could not even run @ 1333Mhz
I had to result to 1066Mhz and then downgrade via Windows ASUS Update 6!
Back to the old 0703 where 1333Mhz is stable. (with 1.88v)

Hi
I've rolled back to 0703 on my P53 non-deluxe, do these voltages look ok to you?
They are all stock (except the DRAM is @ 1.88V because I have 4 sticks).
I've read a lot of comments in this thread and have noticed loads of you even Oscar and a lot of the xtremegurus have also had to downgrade their BIOS.
Is this a sign that ASUS are slipping?
I never had any issues with ASUS BIOSES with my P4P800 and P5LD2 but have had no end of issues with the P5E3.
Or is it because the X38 chipset is a bit......flakey? or still in it's infency and when the X48 comes out we will get stable BIOS updates?
As soon as a decent DDR 4GB kit hits the UK for a reasonable price I am going to off load these 4 sticks as the hassle of 4x1GB is fustrating when in my opinion if there are 4 slots to use....then they should work at their rated speed!
John
Oscar3D, I couldn't agree with you more.
my config. is same as you except that i have liquid cooling & 2gb memory.

I have seen some comments here about rolling back. I am curious to know what issues those of you that did had with 903? Thanks.
