No more single core for me Just got me a G0 Q6600. Just been messing with it for a while trying to see how far it will go. Thinking about running the smp client on it. The e6700 has been doing great with those. Maybe put it back on d2ol since the cows just dropped a 500k dump on us today

Here is what I have so far.

    i7 2600k l Asus P8P67 l 2x2gb Gskill l GTS450 l Venomous X l XClio 680

The quad would eat those SMPs for lunch, that's a good idea Especially at 3.6GHz!

I have the smp client running on the quad now. Took it down just a little. Running at 3.5. It takes less voltage and runs cooler. Temps are 47-52 across the cores. Thats cooler than my dual core!

Got an early unit end error today on the e6700. It was at 77% too Don't understand why. I've been running the smp client on it for about a week with no problems. Plus, I have been running various project on it for months will no issue. It started another wu and so far so good. It will be finished in the morning. After it is done, I am going to run another project on that rig and leave the q6600 on f@h for a while. Hoping the quad will do over 3000 a day.

Some SMP WU's are just unstable and puke out on you. Even some of the standard CPU client's WUs crap out occasionally.

Sorry to say... ocing just isn't stable enough if SMPs fails to run. Believe me, I've tough head, and I had to admit clocks were too high, counter them down eased the client

Somebody could say SMPs are too sensitive... I disagree.

No way I'm going to believe it's not stable. I have been running a lot of math projects on it, and those stress it the most. Just finished up another smp wu today. I think it was not a problem on my end.

Is there a way to somehow run a few PCs in tandem so there is 1 OS running off of say 2 machines or 4 machines, and the OS sees the machines as multiple CPUs? Kind of like a blade server maybe? I would like to connect maybe fold2 and fold4 together like that and run the SMP client through them, but I don't know if that is at all possible. Anyone have any ideas?

I'd look into beowulf clusters, might not be exactly what you're looking for but it's a start.

Beowulf clusters are generally "distributed memory" which is the opposite of "shared memory" which is what a SMP machine is. There are some software packages that you can run on a beowulf cluster that will emulate a shared memory environment, but just "beowulf" out of the box won't do what you want.

Hmm OK. After reading up on that some I'm not sure if I have the know-how to do it anyway, I'm totally a linux n00b

every expert started out as a n00b. don't be scared off if it looks interesting. I kind of doubt that you will be able to get what you're after (a fake SMP), but setting up and learning to use a beowulf style machine can be fun and interesting...

Yeah it would be, and would teach me some things about linux I should really learn. Thing is I don't really want to take down 2 of my crunchers to do this with if I can't set them up as a "fake" SMP when I'm done with it, I don't think it would be worth the lost crunching time.

I have my work PC crunching while I'm there. I couldn't get the SMP client going without admin rights (don't worry, I am allowed to install a few things on this PC as long as it doesn't need admin stuff). This also means I can't get the standard CPU clients installed as a service either so it only crunches while I'm at work, which is about 15 hours a week. At that rate though it'll only be good for around 230 points for a little over 2 weeks, but it might as well do something while I'm here. It is a C2D E6300, definitely slower than my opteron 165 is at crunching this current set of WU's coming through. Then of course my opteron is overclocked and this isn't. Would be interesting to compare the two by putting my CPU back to stock and comparing folding speed.

I figured out why one of my crunchers kept hanging. Amazing what happens when a fan fails The intake fan's bearings seized up so there was a lack of airflow in that box. Guess I shouldn't have ignored the growling sounds from it for this long

The only fan I had to replace it with is a delta 90mm... my ears are hurting!
Hopefully a 7V mod shuts it up.

OK Team, I am gonna lay down some more minor smack talk since I have once again passed the team in ranking. I am 100% sure the team will outrank me again (I am reaching a stable point in the rankings), but by my read of the stats, unless you guys pick it up, it might take a while Get crackin!

I saw that... and I've been thinking about how to correct the deficiency while still offsetting my CO2 footprint. First step : I think I'll keep some C02 credits for myself this year instead of selling them all at tax time.

The second step is figuring out the best performance per watt and so far it looks like Quad core PC's. I'm not sure about the PS/3's as their rated at 900ppd per 200w of consumption, where it seems a quad is rated higher at slightly lower consumption (assuming a stripped quad with network boot and no video or drives).

Anyhow team we need to put in some effort, I mean that glory hog Angra being such a folding snob and all .... hehehehehe

Well starting the 14th I'll be getting my cardboard army back online. My plan though is once this internship gets underway and I have more money to burn I'll upgrade my PC to something more powerful

My crunchers don't put any out any CO2 so it doesn't bother me I'll run as many as I can afford to

I finally upgraded. FAH is compiling at about 99% on each core at 39 C.

I maybe I should overclock, but is just a file/web/dns server.

Now harass me some more and I'll get the 800 mhz computer up as folding only. I gotta get the harddrive recovered first.

But now I gotta go watch Leno. My favorite presidental candidate is on!
