the Scythe Ninja Plus Rev B seems o.k

its smaller than a thermaright 120 and cheaper.....But has those intel clip on stud things, not keen on those it feels like im breaking the board when i install.
yet i wouldn't have to take off the crazy cool back plate.

ive heard the thermal rights usually need lapping too.

does this one need sanding down too?

I have Termalright Ultra 120 extreme on X38-DQ6 with crazy cool untouched . I just mounted the screws with an isolator material and screwnuts on the other side .
I've noticed that the performance rises if you set the bus to be divided by 4 (example 444Mhz, 452Mhz, 466Mhz. Otherwise the performance drops ... I don't know why.
Right now I have the bus set to 452Mhz, the CPU frequency is 3.62GHz, and the memory bus is 1085. This a stable frequency till now. I'll do more testing when I'll change the CPU, for now I do not think that CPU will hold on air.
For those who use an operating system on 32 bits, I'll advise you to test one on 64 bits especially Vista to see the real stability of your system.

never heard of the scythe before you mentioned it , looks very cool.
i shall go search see how it compares to the thermalright in performance.

    peaxce

Yes, see my Sig for my hardware
It does hang over the first yellow RAM slot when you add the 120mm fan..a normal size DIMM will fit ok, but something like an OCZ Reaper or those fancy Dominators are much taller, as such you may want to move the DIMM's to the red slots rather then the yellow ones....though you'll be using Channel B in this instance.

Or...locate the fan in a different direction...thats all you'd need to do, you can place the fan on all four sides of the Scythe heatsinks...my case/configuration requires me to place the fan on one side which covers the first DIMM slot...it's just the way my case/airflow is.

But you can move the fan to any of the four sides to best suit your specific needs.

cool , i ordered one last night a Scythe "Ninja" Rev. B it is actually smaller than the ultra 120.and ive read that nearly all thermalrights need to be lapped too.

although thats pretty cool you managed to install it over the crazy cool chris..i bet its more secure that way..i heard that the thread/bolts were to long for some people
and the cooer was not stable.

im just wondring if i can keep my pc upright at 90 degrees. seems like allot of weight for the mobo to carry.

any way i shall post some temps compared to the stock..using prime and idle too.
    for us gigayte users.

    thanks for your help

The weight shouldn't be too much of an issue, with the fan it's a tad under 1Kg. This might sound like alot but i haven't experienced any issues. Some people complain about the Intel push pins that snap the heatsink into place and the force needed. I work each pin one at a time...push one pin in while holding the heatsink with the other hand firmly, then the opposite side...i think Intel have specific guidelines as to how to push the pins in and in what sequence.

Whatever works best i guess, you should get the Scythe 1600 RPM fans...it's very quiet.

I'm really liking this OCZ Vendetta. It's compact and easy to install using the pushpins. It cools great for it's size. The direct contact with the heatpipes really seems to make a noticeable difference.

i just pulled the trigger on my x38-dq6 and scythe revision B as well as a 1600 rpm scythe fan(man that was expensive! 24$)

Im hoping they will play nice with my q6000 G0 and 2gb pc1066. But most importantly im hoping it works ok with my 3warse 9650se raid controller. whats the most stable recent bios so far?

I had assumed the profiles got lost with the clear CMOS but to be honest I didn't look.

Hello dude, i also got the same problem, that when overclocking fails, it goes in endless loop trying to recover!

I dunno what i should do.

Now last time, i installed vista, rebooted many times during installation (normal reboots, drivers, software etc), then i installed sp1, and when sp1 was finished installing, it requierd a reboot, then it didnt start again after that.

Sometimes it helps to rip out 3 of 4 ram sticks, just leving one inside, then it somtimes manages to recover the overclocking.

anyway, here are my bios settings.

Edit: deleted some images, i can look at them here if u want: http://venes.org/oc/gigabyte/biosf5h

Is there anyway to put the images into spoilers?

    Edit:

I think i found it! TRD cant be 5! now i tested with 8, and worked so far... will post back laiter.

    hello

what ram have you got and which bios is this? are you on a q6600.

at first glance i notice the static tread value is rather low set at '5' ...my x38-dq6 hates anything below '6'
    and i get boot problems.

try upping to '7' this seems to be the norm value. ( i'm right? am i not people ???)

that would be the first thing i would do....sometimes the bios advises varying figures depending on what other settings you make.. my machine would have problems that low..im pretty sure:/ !!!

although it might be at '5' because you have four modules??

give it a go..it cant hurt the mother board.

im sure others will advise too.

also get a copy of memtest, boot via the cd you create.. and check your modules before anything.( i use windows xp...but i downloaded a copy of 'ubuntu linux'. On that cd image is copy of memtest86 , i just let the motherboard boot to cd ..and test away until stable in memory.. then ...go into windows and test with prime95.

if your memory fails with memtest you wont pass with prime95.

it most likely you have a memory issue, lots of us found it hard to stablise 2 let alone 4 at 1066 mark..

it takes a while to find the right settings ...usually the modules fail at test 5 and 6.
tweak around until you get at least 2 passes...then you should be o.k ,

some people were instead dropping the frequency and tightening the timings instead ...Which with many programs is better anyway...Yet you paid good money , and you should get your system to run on stock values.

hope its the 'static read' parameter causing you problems....tell us how you get on.

also sorry if i'm stating the obvious ...i m not sure how much you know...your probably a genius with a single setting miss configured.hahah

    fingers crossed.
    peace

Quick note about the new F5j for X38T...Apparently my ram doesnt like 1333mhz which is what this (and the F4a) defaults to, so endless reboot until I take out 1 stick of ram (so maybe its the dual channel bug?) anyhow, put in my stable timings and settings from F3i and wont even post, either with 1 or 2 sticks of ram...tried relaxing all the timings out and had Performance enhance on standard, dropped to 9 x 266, 4.00D strap (1066) @ 9-9-9-24 (on Corsair 1600 7-7-7-20), got as far as windows logon screen and it froze...went back to F3i until Gigabyte releases something worthwhile...tho with the X48 boards coming, and the long delay in bioses for the X38T, I wonder just how much support this is going to continue to receive...
Like my cpu, born just a little too slow...

    hello

i just went into my bios

my static tread value is set at 8 ( auto 8)
my static tread phase adjust is set at 5 ( auto 5)

everything else in that section is the same as yours.

    although i have my standard timnings at 5 5 5 15 ( not 5 5 5 18 as auto wants me to be)

i cant see your ram voltage it seems to be blured out.

i have a fsb of 400 and my voltage to fsb is 15v so that seems o.k

drop your mch overvlotage one or 2 notches. perhaps?

i'm on 1066 and my north bridge is at .100 but its hard to say as im on 2 not 4 sticks.

try all this for now. bets of luck

The thermalright wont work with crazycool on. You can either remove crazycool as i did, or instaed of using thermalrights backplate you can use individual nuts and still use crazy cool.

I tested crazycool before i put the thermalright on and it makes little to no difference with temps.

if you do a google on thermalright 120 ultra extream and talk to people on forums almost all will suggest you lap this cooler. once lapped, will give excellent results !!! By the sounds of things it the most popular for overclockers.

it was a bit big for my motherboard because i have tall ram + fans above ...but this Scythe Ninja Rev. B looks like a real contender. (it has a copper base).

Yes, the tRD was to low.

It's way better now with the tRD on 8. Might try 7 or 6 in the future.

cool.. if you have any more trouble make :

static tread phase adjust ' 5' (or 4?)

if i'm correct , with your setting at 'auto' it will be set at '1' i'm not sure if that is good?

i do remember testing in that area ...running prime and although i was doing o.k i would get a jittery mouse and windows and apps closing/opening very slowly ....sometimes when you reduce the latencies instead of a quicker machine you get a messy confused machine.

anyhow it is strange they were so low (in auto)....glad its running better now.

I still have some boot issues at the time.

It seems the memory strap sometimes goes to 400Mhz while i putted it on 266 2.00.

When i load my settings again then it will boot.

Yesterday i wanted to change some Volt settings and after that my overclock settings didnt want to pick up by the board.
Whatever i do it stays on default, even though the bios tells me i am running 9x400.

I think i need to reset CMOS again which means i will loose my profiles again.

I am still thinking of RMA this board but first i will try bios F7f.

Does anyone know when rev 1.1 will be in the stores, if it is i want to exchange the board for a newer revision.

Hey Cornel I think it's Freeky not Freddy

Glad to see Freqy's advice helped you out
Thats why forums like these are good

You should be able to switch to turbo for the Enhance Performance setting
You should also be able to raise the 400 fsb and lower the 400mhz memory strap down to a 333mhz strap using 2.4x for much better results

    try this profile

    444 x8 @3552
    Performance Enhance turbo
    memory multi 2.40B
    5-5-5-18 3-3-6-42-3-8-5-2T
    cpu/pciex 1000mV
    ddr2 +0.55v
    pcie +0.25v
    fsb +0.15v
    (G)MCH +0.175v
    your cpu is good +1.42v

its early in the morning for me..so i'm not sure i totally understand..
are you saying no matter what you do, if you leave everything at stock values ..it reverts back to auto after you reboot??

does the system reboot.. then go off... then reboot again? if that happens the bios will switch back to auto.

there will be a problem with the motherboard reconising your components stock settings perhaps??

post your intelligent tweaker settings maybe we can help further.??

the jumper thing should work ...damn what a pain....are you sure your jumper is touching the pins o.k?

Hi, last week since I don't have anything better to do, I buyed from a friend,an AMD cooler wich use PELTIER element for fast cooling.

The best bios for overclocking, that works FLAWLESS on my Gigabyte X38-DQ6 is FIRST REVISION (F3), also F4 works good too.
None of beta bioses was good for me.

    Enjoy the pictures!

P.S. My Cpu batch , seems to be ok (L723A679), but I have 1,300 VID
