    Help with 8800gtx vmod

i've decived to do the vmod for my 8800gtx, but i've read too many different guides, some use 10kohm vr and some 20khom...etc, is there a guide that some of you guys have done and know is the right one to do....any advise?
    Regards Andrew

1 tip.. Save yourself a bit of trouble and use this spot for the gpu volt mod insted of the resistor to the right as its a bit stronger and easier to solder to. Many people lately have that chip come off doing it.

Also you could use a 400 Ohm - 1K Ohm VR for the GPU. For the vmem you could use a 20K - 100K trimmed to 20K Ohms.

I believe i trimmed my 1K VR to 500 Ohms before attaching it.

Also use the thinnest wire you can find. i used 20 i believe and i'm gona remove it and redue it today using 30. An old floppy drive cable would work great by pealing off the individual wires from it.

thanks dude, sounds good. any idea of what stock volts are for core and ram? i have the card on water, what are my limits for volts? at stock volts at the moment i am running 675/1100.

core ~ 1.3v & mem ~ 1.95v stock but depends on card model, and whether its a normal or factory overclocked version. The latter usually have slightly higher voltages. The highest ive heard of for stock gpu is 1.35v and mem is 2.2v.
It depends on what your stock voltages are when it comes to selecting the right size VR. I suggest you use your dmm & measure your stock voltages first. Then you measure the resistance between the mod points and ground. The general rule is to ake this resistance and multiply it by 20 and you have your VR value to use.
I have seen people use a 500ohm VR and got vgpu's of ~ 2.5v which is not good. I suggest using a 10K VR to start with if your determined to not use a dmm and do it 'properly'. (im assuming you dont have a dmm as you dont know your cards voltages) - if you want to get into modding its an essential piece of equipment. I would never turn on any of my stuff after modding without first checking my work with a dmm.

Im just getting started with Vmodding GPUs.

Excuse my ignorance but what is a DMM?

Ive seen the 8800GTX guides for Vgpu mod, OVP mod, etc.....but is there a general Vmodding guide somewhere that shows all of the tools needed, all of the lingo/abbreviations/how to actually perform the mods (I mean physically - for a noob, not WHERE to perform it but actually how)?

    Thanks!

DMM = digital multi meter. Its used for measuring voltages, resistances etc of circuits.

theres a soldering guide here (the art of soldering) and there is general mention in modding threads of tools required. Generally you need a dmm, small (less than 25watt) soldering iron, small diameter rosin core solder, brush on flux - helps get things to stick to each other, small pliers, wire from an old floppy disk cable is good for mods (i use it) and a work space with a bright light so you can see clearly. Sometimes one of those magnifying glass lights can help doing really small stuff (i havent needed one yet but id could help). Thats about it. Oh and steady hands

Im completely 100% brand new to electrical work. Ive been reading the volt mod guides/etc here and other forums, but still most of the electrical 'lingo' evades me.

"ground this" etc......Obviously I know what grounding means, but have no clue how to accomplish that or how to use a resistor, or even WHAT a resistor actually does. Any suggestions on a good source for newb electrical information that would be pertinent to computer modding?

Im not looking to become a licenced electrician, just know enough so I can do what I need to do with computers

Thx again for the supply list and the info so far.

EDIT/ADD: I do have a DMM, and although its a cheapy radioshack model, it work. But I am such a n00b I dont even know where to touch the probes to determine........anything LOL......I dont even know which function to use to measure voltage. I think I have used it before to measure conductivity (I BSEL modded a CPU and wanted to check that it could carry a current) but other than that......yea Im pretty green.

ók guys i got my multimeter back, i check my stock voltages and core was 1.32 and mem is a high 2.2volts, so i got a 1k VR and did the mod, i set my volts to 1.4 and under load it dropped back to 1.35...so i adjusted it under load to 1.42 volts but idle is 1.49...should i worry? i ran 3dmark2006 and got a nice 16376.

can you test the resistance of your resistor please.
ive managed to get mine down from 320omh to 280omh, but the voltage hasnt changed at all yet and im slightly concerned that something is wrong with it.

did you mod the resistor shown in the pic above, or did you use the normal one??

I need to confirm if the spot shown in the picture above actely works as an alternative mod spot? Course i actely spiked 2.5v Vgpu through my ultra card today, and almost killed it, using that point. But if someone can confirm that spot actely works, i most have done something wrong, and will try again.

well i just tried pencling that point and got a 0.03v increase, which has allowed me to go from 661 to 678mhz as a max overclock.

Dont adjust under load! Do it while idling. Yes the drop in voltage is normal. Max voltage i'd play with is 1.6v under water.. usually any more you'll need serious cooling and a another mod to stop the card from shutting down with that much voltage.
