c'mon!!!! You can't even say if you are using air or water? That's breaking the NDA?

The price tag alone for even stock Skulltrail parts will assure I'll never build one. But I'm not complaining. To the contrary, I'm truly at awe.

Congradulations go to those talented engineers at Intel for setting the bar even higher in the semi-conductor industry. And congratulations to those enthusiasts that can afford to soon build such a great piece of technology. Go Intel!

I think it falls under the category of FUGGERs Xtreme News so I think it applies in this situation.

I'm thinking water cooled. A while ago, it was shone off @ 5.0ghz with dual phase units...

edit: Think I need to add a bit to my reasoning

There's been lots and lots of Wolfdales and such being showed off @ 4ghz+ on air, and given the time they've had to tweak SkullTrail since the 5.0ghz demo, I'm sure they've been able to have it reach 4.8ghz on water. Probably not something to be ran 24/7 though

The universe will go on, indifferent to our brief existence, but while we are here we touch not just part of that vastness, but also the lives around us. Life is the gift each of us has been given. Each life is our own and no one else's. It is precious beyond all counting. It is the greatest value we have. Cherish it for what it truly is."

God bless the xtreme who don't pay attention to resale value and keep this place very entertaining.

this board looks nice, but how about some pics with higher FSB, 400 FSB is standard fair. Awesome clock though on that xtremechip, if only i could bother myself to spend the cash on a unlocked beast

Impressive worth of CPU performance there and 4.8GHz omg. Too bad it carries pricetag of its own but I expect to see some hefty 3DMark06 score later.

Its one of those elite things that you will pay twice as much as it should cost, and will lose value much faster than anything else. So my point is that its not the top, its something in its own class, the class of retards with way too much money and way too little brains. Dont take any offense in this, I know you can get a bit defensive about skulltrail (you and your multicore... you should see a psychiatrist), but just pause and think about it. I have no problem with people buying QX chips, or spending 800 dollars on a kit of ram, or buying 2x the latest and greatest video cards, and so on. Those things always have resale value, and dont become expensive paperweights. But Skulltrail is one of those things that will cost you boats of money, and will end up in the gutter just like Quad FX.

@ Naekuh, thanks for the nice words aigo (im guessing its you...)
I think your missing the point in that not everyone cares about price / performance, i may be taking a stab at your name being 87 the year your born, and thus you being 20 you might not understand that some people are in an economic bracket, where performance is the most important thing, that the satisfaction of having the fastest rig is the reward in itself... Granted thats a smaller segment of the community, but i dont see how one has a right to tell people how to spend their money, or what they should enjoy... people dont buy bugatti's for resale value.

yes, but when you buy a bugatti you will have the fastest car for a long, long time. when you buy skulltrail , you will have the fastest machine for about 12 months, for an absurd price.

skulltrail is nothing more than a proof of concept design. I wouldn't want to be the person who looks at his chassis in Q4 2008 and thinks "I cant believe I spent 3000 dollars on a pair of cpus that nobody would even dream of wanting right now, and omg, nehalem is faster, overclocks more, and uses less power". I think that feeling completely cancels out the "zomg I have the fastest machine ever" feeling when you just buy skulltrail. maybe thats just me, but I work hard for my money.

and please buddy, dont compare cars to computers. we're at the pinnacle of development with the mechanics in cars, when you buy a bugatti you will have the fastest car until you die perhaps. unless all of sudden they make it legal to strap a jet engine at the back of a car. technology is not like that, I dont need to tell you that. so if it makes people happy to own the best for such a very short time while spending a load of cash, then so be it. Im not the one to tell you how to spend your money, but I do have the right to state my opinion on the product, and thats all I am doing.

but what if you are setting world records with your rig, what comes of it then, is it still just a pile of junk in a year? Its all for the records in his mind, you just dont see it the same way, plus charles is sponsored so it doesnt matter anyway, I bet he gets most of the crap just handed to him to test out for Intel, ect.

I am not talking to charles or any other overclocker that does this for records... My argument is directed to the average XS forum user that comes to XS to learn how to get the best possible machine for his money. because after all thats what 99% of the users are here for.

Correct me if I am out of line anywhere.

Sorry to say this but your wrong on many points.
Buy that Bugatti today and in under 2 years something will be faster.
    Same as PC's my friend.
One has to make the decision at what level he wants to play.
Yes, you get a year at the top and thats the price of admission.
If you don't want to play at that level you simply don't buy the top and settle for something lesser.
Now you say: " I wouldn't want to be the person who looks at his chassis in Q4 2008 and thinks "I cant believe I spent 3000 dollars on a pair of cpus that nobody would even dream of wanting right now, and omg, nehalem is faster, overclocks more, and uses less power".
I could say that same thing right now comparing this SkullTrail rig to my Clovertown setup but that is evolution and I accept it.
It doesn't make my rig useless, it just means that there is something faster out there. My system does just as much today as it did yesterday so there is no feeling of OMG, I have to toss this in the barrel..
    See what I mean?
Someone buys this ST system today and they will get more than a year out of it. Much more.

I raced cars for years..Drags and SCCA
Would have loved to play at the top with the big boys in F1 but outside of my financial ability( and personal talents)
We all find that area that we're comfortable at and thats where we "play"

Now back to our regularly scheduled "Fugger Watch" hoping he shows some more on this beast!
Crunch with us, the XS WCG team
The XS WCG team needs your support.
A good project with good goals.

Unfortunately when you pay 1.3 million for a Bugatti Veyron that doesn't give you the fastest car for more than 23 months. As the current fastest production car in the world is the SCC Ulimate Aero TT produced by Shelby Super Cars. And it only costs 600,000.
Only about HALF that of the Veyron.

Just like what villa1n said, as with people with Bugatti's and Skulltrails, these people are in a different financial bracket. Absolute performance is their goal and price doesn't deter them. There is absolutely no reason to say it's stupid when people are striving for this, it can be very stupid when people are looking for a price/performance cpu and they pick out a QX chip though. Don't get the two situations confused and show some respect to those who have different priorities and goals.

Edit: Movieman beat me by couple minutes =P
