I think it's just the bios writers being lazy in this case because this card worked fine in two different asus boards Intel and AMD. The card works great in this board I just can't get into the bios. with the 0401 bios the card with change speed from x4 to x8 every other boot up.

i think it all depends on how the bios is written to handle the 2nd PCIe slot, assuming that you have your main VC in the 1st PCIe slot.

i can speak to Abit mobo's not hindering the function of Areca Raid card.

it all depends on how the bios code is formulated to accept PCIe cards

    the card works fine.
the only problem I have is getting into the areca card bios. I don't think any other X38 will be any different. it goes back to the rumors about raid cards and X38. the X48 is suppose to carry over the same problem. As for DFI they take too long to release their boards. I for one would like to see bios screenshots if anyone with an X38 can get into the bios.

Hopefully this is just an Asus X38 mobo problem. I have the DFI X38 on the way, it will be here on Monday. I should have it put in by Tuesday evening and I will post here with results. If it doesn't work with the Areca 1210, the board goes back...

    here's the rumor
According to a list of errata's that we've seen from Intel with regards to its X38 chipset, there's a problem with some PCIe cards and the x16 PCI Express slots. There's no real need to worry though, as graphcis cards will work just fine.

Intel isn't planning on fixing the issue either, since it's aparently only related to some x4 and x8 cards, such as RAID controllers and dual or quad network cards and these aren't really intended for the X38 chipset.

I have a Abit ix38 quad gt and I have a LSI SAS controller card. This card will only boot in the black PCI-E slot. This black slot is pci-e x4 eletrical i think. In the other 2 blue pci-e 2.0, there was no way to get it to boot

In my other MB, Asus p5k deluxe, the PCI-E sas controller is working in the pci-e x16 port..

    I need a MB that support 2x pci-e x4/x8 SAS controllers! Someone tested MSI x38 diamond or Asus x38 w64 ?

Sounds like problems with the Areca board not being fully tested on non server boards. Cards are supposed to be designed to work with the majority of motherboards out there, not the other way around. I understand the occasional product/brand not working completely but entire chipsets should have been worked out before the board went out.

I e-mailed Areca and they said they were going to try and get ahold of an X38-based motherboard and look into it for us. I e-mailed then Sunday and got the response yesterday. Just thought I would pass that on...

Also, I should have my DFI X38 up and running in a few hours, so I will report back here on if the card works or not in the 2nd pci-e X16 slot.

Well, the card does work in the 2nd pci-express 16X slot, but only at 1X. I have it in the top slot running at 4X, as it was on the P35-TR2, in lieu of the 2 HD3580 512meg cards I have arriving tomorrow.

Just thought I'd let you all know.

I had it on pre-order at motherboardpro.com since mid-Novemeber. I finally got it this afternoon. So far, so good, other than the issue already mentioned with the card. but, I figure with just 3 hd's on it, it won't be hindered at all running at 4X (vice 8X).
