The eVGA (and possibly all reference) 590 sli boards are not going to support Phenom (or the 6400+ windsor) ever, officially from eVGA. All support of the board has been dropped it appears (you can't even download the drivers for it anymore)...

it seems to me that the "drop-in" feature of AM2/AM2+/AM3 is just BS
except for a few boards

Its' only about manufacturers support. Support code for Phenom is around 30KB, but some manufacturers filled their 4 MB BIOS chips full, and don't want to optimize... On the other hand all 8MB BIOS based mobos will work flawlessly... ofcourse, some manufacturers will manage to squeeze Phenom support in to a 4MB chip
