I plan to grab an Abit IP35-E , Team 1gb x2 DDR2-800 and a E2160..
Would it be safe to assume it can do 3.2Ghz and 400fsb 1:1 on stock cooling ?

So, yesterday I did an upgrade-on-the-cheap:
M0 E2160 + GB 945GCMX-S2 + 2×1GB/800 + Samsung T166.
As Im waiting for 8800GT or HD3800 to be available, I'm using the IGP now.

The 945GC chip is supposed to support 333FSB... supposed...
the factory bios didn't even let me oc, it reset the freqs to default upon
restarting from bios. With the updated bios, it's stable at 9×266=2400.
However, raising the fsb to 300 and vcore to 1.375 resulted in freqs reset
to default at the reboot. Setting even 275 in windows with the GB ntune
utility resulted in colorful lines all over the screen... the type when video
card's vram die, except the igp doesn't have ram.
Also, setting the "OC to 1333FSB" in bios to enabled resulted in a boot screen
with colorful lines...
I have a lot to experiment with it, I didn't have much time to so far, but this
is a bit confusing. The 333FSB may have been because of low vcore, but the
rest, especially the lines? Low vfsb? PCIe unlocked? Dud board? IGP doesn't
like oc?

Oh and Orthos made my cpu block obsolote even with 2.4G
Maybe the board's bios is measuring it wrongly, but because I set it to alarm
at 80C, it went buzzing after a few minutes of Orthos, with RMClock showing
50-53C. Funny that my old A XP2400+ 2@2.33 stayed around 39-40C even
under full load... low surface area of the block and cap vs no-cap, but this is
still a drastic difference.

It's M0, every one thinks that L2 better.
but if you want only ~3ghz this is no problem for m0/l2

Look my signature if you don't believe me , but ...

M0 does overclock better, they like higher FSB then L2. 1 negative thing is that they usually need more VCore then a L2 on the same speed. 400FSB is mostly normal, and you even can get 450-460 with good steppings .

L2 does overclock good, 400FSB and higher is rare, usually 3-3.2Ghz on stock VCore or even lower. But if they reach there FSB spot and don't go further, you can give them as much as Vcore you want, they don't go higher .
And still I will not own everyone[/FONT]

Spent half an hour with it yesterday morning, and I think I have the source of
the problem: ram dividers and timings.

Divider=auto then oc => too high memory frequency.
Divider=2.00 (1:1) => it is stuck at the SPD values for 200: 3-3-3-9-12.
Highest stable this way was ~280, and then the ram was running 560 3-3-3-9.
So then I tried 2.66 (3:4 IIRC), and at 280 the timings were loosened to the
SPD value of 266, CL5. (More or less: it was running 745 5-4-4-something).
Didn't have time to play around with it since, though, but this seems to be
working and those memory corruption-like artifacts now make sense.

From what I have seen, < 5% more like 3% I think. It was a while since I read the reviews. It will have more of a hit in encoding etc.

EDIT: @ BeardyMan: nice... I get 19.063 with my setup.
I will clock the ram higher when I can be bothered lol.

Well, I didn't do it directly but I was the primary source of information for the overclock.

Without further ado... I do bring you... Lew Blu's... E2180.

Processor: Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2180
CPU Cooler: Scythe Katana 2 with stock fan
Motherboard: Asrock 4CoreDual-SATA2
RAM: Kingston 1GB DDR2 667
Graphics Card: Geforce MX 4000 128MB
Hard Drive: Hitachi Deskstar 7K160 80GB (iirc) and Seagate (something-or-another)
OS: Micro$oft Windows XP w/o SPs install yet

So here are some results...
Maximum frequency (no stability tests yet): 2640MHz

SuperPi 1M - CPU-Z Dump
2.0GHz - dump
2.44GHz - dump
2.64GHz - dump

There ya go--any tips? I need some info on setting the timings for the RAM on the Asrock board--everything (except CAS) comes up as like 2T, 4T, 6T, &c. I'd like to loosen them up a little bit to see if it's still RAM limited or if it's board limited.

Thanks,
Bobsama (on behalf of Lew Blu)

Nice results here, my 2140 goes at 3.2GHz with 1.375V. Now 2 questions:
-what is the max core temp that i should watch for?(now its standing at 59-60degrees celsius with Orthos running)
-how much should i test it with Orthos to see that is really stable
-how much vcore can i pump into him?
Currently running on P35-DS3L from Gigabyte and 4x1Gb Teamgroup Xtreem Dark(DDR800,4-4-4-12 at 2-2.2V)

Lower the voltage on the RAM default voltage according to JEDEC DDR2 specifications is 1.8v. Runnning it at DDR800 with 2.2v just because its "rated" at 2.2v is idiotic. Not saying u are an idiot, just Ive been noticing alot of users happy to dial in the maximum Vdimm before even testing default speed at 1.8v. U might need a little extra due to 4 dimms and tighter timings but only raise it if u discover instability.

Test for 24hrs to see if its stable, bear in mind that what is stable in winter might not be stable in summer. I wouldnt put more than 1.45v through CPU with aircooling. Temperatures look good. I'd be tempted to leave it like that or test if u can overclock further without more voltage and hence higher temps.

I set the ram voltage higher then the 1.8 mark because it wasnt stable in Orthos(cpu&ram test failed but cpu test ran flawless) at over ddr800 and 5-5-5-15.
I will test with Orthos longer to see that its stable.
Now the ram is at 5-5-5-15 2x400 and 2V.

I have my e2140 (M0 stepping) running at 3.2ghz with vcore of 1.35V. I think it needs less than this though and was just trying to quickly get results. It will run 3ghz at alost stock volts. I had to up them because of the vdrop and vdroop that my P35-DS3R suffers from I believe. I have a problem though, my Geil 2x1gb ram will not run past 400 FSB (800mhz). i've tried everything and would like to know what my e2140 can do, but I can't push further as its only a x8 multi, and the ram would need to be able to keep up with the FSB at 1:1 and it doesnt like it. I thought this ram would easily overclock a little but it does not seem to like anything over stock 800mhz despite being mem test, superpi and orthos stable at stock and cpu @ 3.2ghz.
Any ideas?

sound stupid to ask but did you raise the voltage on the ram? i had geil ram before ddr400 i never got mine to their rated speeds either. but im not sure if it was my mobo, ram or superlocked barton. im leaning to the proc. also have you tried doing the bsel mod? mine boots at 2.13ghz with the mod for 1066/266mhz. also change the divider.

Chalk up a 3.0 Ghz E2180 OC to the list. Board is an XBX2, cooler is a Tuniq with a low-speed fan 7 volt'ed (just a spare parts internet box for the gf).

A couple observations...

I can really see the difference in thermal transfer from the die to the IHS to the cooler with this series processer. Not like the higher-range cpu's wiith their soldered die/IHS interface at all. Very interesting how the temps ramp up under Orthos load with the paste style die/IHS interface on these things compared to my E6600. Almost seems a waste of time to lap the cpu and cooler & use Coolaboratory LM like I did, but I'm sure it helped some anyway.

The 2180 could probably do 3.1 Ghz but Orthos load temps were running in the ~70c range with the silent cooling solution I want to use, 3.2Ghz=unhappy machine, so I didnt really play with that speed too much.

All in all, not too shabby getting Core2 at 3.0Ghz for $90 delivered
