It would be greatly appreciated if one of you lucky QX9650 owners could run the chip at ~2700mhz in nuclearus (you may also run it at a higher speed and submit your score to the nuclearus thread) or crystalmark so that we can compare it to a 2,7ghz phenom clock for clock.
I think it would also help to see penryn's improvements in some more "exotic" benchmarks compared to conroe@2.7.

So far the fastest chips out there have been the early 9650 ES's. I could have bought one but decided to go for an OEM. That crap started with a not-so-good review by Anandtech.. Anyway retail QX9770 won't be much hotter than QX9650. Shown by a digitlife review. I just noticed they write the QX9770 will fit in the 130W thermal envelope, wasn't there a rumour (?) it would be 150W?

As long as they keep the QX9770 under that 130W envelope we shouldn't have any problems. Unless they already made deals with Dell to create a super XPS model with inside case phase-WC system...
I guess some new air cooler might appear next year...

Simply put, they are making chips, and some are coming out really well... (in testing, they need slightly less voltage and produce less heat at a certain speed), so they are putting the 'best' ones aside for a higher model number at a higher price.

That's pretty much it. When the 45's come out, they take the best ones and send tem to the 9770 pile, the next best go to 9650 and then down the line. In the past, when a new model comes out and it's higher speed cousin hasn't gone to market yet, you may get the benefit of the higher speed because these higher speed units from whichever lot they are from are not "binned" over yet because the higher speed cpu hasn't come out yet. As soon as they know they need a higher speed model, then they start pushing the best ones over to that model lines bin, i.e. "binning" and so on. I not sure if they test samples form each lot or each and every unit from the lot.
