How hot is everyone else's Northbridge running?
I'm entirely on air, but I have good airflow in my case and mine runs a good 55-62 degrees celsius. That seems really really hot to me, but perhaps all you guys getting better temps are watercooling.
I'm considering RMA'ing the board, I find it hard to believe that's normal. That could also partially explain why I cannot get my memory stable in memtest with any sort of FSB increase.
My system (CPU & GPU) are water cooled, but NB is running with the stock air cooler which I have a 120mm fan blowing over to provide better airflow. I also have the optional fan that came with the board installed too just the the IO panel.
Temperature running OCCT in RAM Mode at 1.49V for the NB (1.54 actual) is 42 degrees celsius.
BTW, I didn't replace the stock thermal compound at all, so the only addition to the stock NB cooler is the optional fan that came with the board and another 120mm fan blowing over the area.

Hmm... Well it's beginning to sound like my suspicions could be correct. Thanks for the feedback thus far guys!
Does anyone happen to know for sure whether my temps of 55-62 degrees (and that's with sub 1.45 volts mind you) on the NB is "overly" hot? I guess ideally I'd just like a solid answer from someone who knows for certain. Hell, maybe that's not too bad of a temp at all. I'm just trying to figure out what's up with my stability problems.
My NB is at 32C air cooled at 1.65 volts.

Hi, isn't the peg/pci, pci/peg, actually for which video card is initialised first? For example, my crossfire card, in the first slot, shows a blank screen upon booting, no post display however once the vista gfx drivers are initialised I get a picture. Now when I change peg/pci to pci/peg, my second card is then initialised first and I get a picture in post ok.
May I also quote form the manual, " Initiate Graphic Adapter[PEG/PCI], Allows you to decided which graphics controller to use as the primary boot device."
Those of you having raid issues when trying to install vista:
1) You do not need any other drivers, vista has its own, and I've never felt the need to use the matrix manager either.
2) Ensure that at least one of the primary boot drives is connected to 'Sata 1', as the motherboard actively seeks that one out first. I have always used Sata 1 and 2 as my primary boot setup.
3) I have installed raid arrays on numerous occasions as raid or as a single drive set as raid in the bios. As I have always been successful I can tell you there is nothing wrong with the motherboard and raid.
Thanks,
Chris

thats what I was saying. PEG/PCI, Sure you might get video upon booting into windows, But I was just saying the motherboard will look for only the PCI or PEG first, and skip the other. Its just like having 2 monitors installed. the monitor in the first DVI/VGA slot will be used during the boot process , the other will not become "the primary" till windows sees it and You've told windows to use it as primary.

OK well unless someone gives me a reason not to, it looks like I'll be RMA'ing the board. Hopefully that will clear up my problems... This entire fiasco has been one giant mess so far.

My northbridge temp is around 45c@idle and ~52c@load. With 1.57v to it.
Do you guys think i should try to reseat the heatsink ?
I have the NON-SE version.

Warboy, try out the Anandtech settings and see how that does? I know they're for a much higher clock but it might be worth it? i'll post my settings for you when i get home from work, we'll get this problem solved!
Well, I think my memory is dying because once I lowered the AI Booster and the other memory based settings, the system became stable, Idk if its the memory controller on the X38 or my memory.
but anyways, I almost got 4ghz stable.
PS. Your obviously not getting what I'm saying, So re-read, and re-read some more, before trying to make a argument.

I have the following question:
I´ve got the board "ASUS Maximus" and two of the 160 GB SAT2 WD1600YS fixed disks. I want to create a RAID0. When I set the RAID in BIOS and reboot the computer, it freezes at the begining of the start monitor. Only when I pull the SATA cables it will reboot. Where is the mistake? Who can help me? I spoke with the ASUS support and they told me that my power supply unit with 500 Watt is not enough. I should buy me a 800 Watt power supply unit. Is this possible?
bios 901
and
bios 602
Maximus II Formula :: Intel C2Q9450 ::
CM Stacker 830Nvidia
Evga GTX 260 Core 216 Superclocked
raid0 2x VelociRaptor .
I reseated the heatsink now.
Now running 1.55v Northbridge. Idle@44c - Load@50c.
I´ve got a 80mm fan blowing on northbridge too @ low speed.
I cant run 450fsb because my CPU has fsbwall and will make the computer freeze after 5min load.
So running 445fsb * 8 now perfectly stable![]()

I took some time today now to remove the heatsink from the NB and the SB, clean up the stock TIM and replace it with AS5. It took ages to clean the heatsinks up because of the stuff which ASUS have used. It requires constant heating up with a hairdryer and plenty of TIM remover to get it all off.
Anyways, with the same scenario as I previously mentioned, NB temps are now down between 6 and 8 degrees to around 36 degrees celsius at load.
Well worth the effort![]()
Hello to the 4rum and all proud owners of the Asus Maximus Formula. It's my first post in the forum.
I just have a question regarding the temperature as well.
When I first got my mobo, I checked CPU temp in both BIOS and Asus Probe and they show the same temp (around 30 at idle). But since I flashed the BIOS to 0802, I notice there's a big change in temp as BIOS shows 50 when first starts up and Asus Probe still shows the same temp but the temp on Asus Probe keep decreasing as oppose to temp in BIOS keep increasing. (after a few min, Asus Probe shows 45 while BIOS shows 54) There's about 9-10 degrees difference between those 2, not sure if some of you might have the same problem but I wonder if BIOS version might cause the problem?
I download SpeedFan and it shows the same result like Asus Probe. As far as I know they both read the temp through BIOS so why there is such a difference? My core temps are normal I assume, around 21-24 for each core.
Should I update to the latest BIOS which is 0902?
