I replaced my bum P5E3 Deluxe (would not post with memory speed above 1333) for the Maximus Extreme that just went on sale here in the US, and so far I am very pleased. Clock for clock, the throughput and latencies are a bit better even than my beloved P5K Deluxe (not by huge amounts, but an incremental improvement).
Here's 8x450, DDR 1800 C7 on the P5K3 Deluxe:
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...DDR31800C7.jpg
Exact same cpu, memory, and settings on the Maximus Extreme (notice higher memory read speed, lower latencies, faster Super Pi run):
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...0x8Maximus.jpg
And for fun, here's 500fsb (haven't tested stability beyond prime 1) (max stable fsb on the P5K3 as 480):
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...500Maximus.jpg
My Corsair DDR3 1800 wouldn't load Windows at DDR 2000 without drawing more voltage that I was prepared to give these sticks (representing as they do a substantial part of my retirement savings), but they did scale nicely to 1960 with no extra voltage over spec at all (just much looser timings):

Final note on this board: after an hour or so of quick testing, I've also noticed the vdrop/vdroop is much better than on the P5E3 Deluxe. Specifically, unlike on the P5E, Load Line Callibration really reduces vdrop on the Maximus Extreme, almost as well as the cpu voltage damper on the P5K Deluxe.
Maximus takes more NB and VTT voltage to achieve the same overclocks as the P5K however.

I made an attempt to remove the massive heat sinks from the board to remove the factory paste and replace it with AS5. (on my P5E)
It was simple to remove the screws and back plate from the NB HS but when I got to those pesky little plastic hold down pins I balked due to the massive amount of traces surrounding the holes of the back of the board.
Normally in past removals I used long nose pliers, but in this case there is NO margin of clearance to the traces.
I really hate to leave the factory TIM in place but sure would hate to ruin the board.
Any easier way to extract these push pin of plastic?

Haven't done the mod yet and now I'm visiting family for a couple of days. (I love them and all, but man I'm really itching to get back to my new mobo -- only had a couple of hours to tweak before I had to leave. What a dweeb I am!). Anyway, I'll try the mod as soon as I get home and report back.

I am having a small problem.
I have a Cooler Master 690 and it has no standard case speaker two pin connection that is typical and connects to the system panel connectors.
It has a AC 97 and HD Audio cables. Does one of these plug into the pins AAFP1 on the back of the motherboard sound card? This must somehow be the reason I have no case speaker cable- two pin cable.
I cannot find anything in the ASUS manual about this aafp1 connector on the P5E sound card.

I got it built with an E6850, G.Skill PC2-8000 2 x 2G (Thanks Stargazer!), EVGA 8800GT SC, Hitachi 1TB, Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. Running Memtest 86+ v 1.70 though it doesn't recognize the chipset. Fastest RAM throughput I've seen.I guess I need to make a floppy from the ASUS CD to install AHCI driver? Hi everybody... I have one wierd problem when upgrading bios for P5E to 0401 or 0402.
Bios flashing procedure does everything "by the book" without any errors and boots to system spec and stops on press F1 or F2
(like always after flashing with new bios), to setup default settings or manualy setup settings. I can enter bios, customize my settings and save them.
When i reboot monitor stays black with fans running and no post from board.
All older bioses causes no problems at all (from 0303 and below). All settings are default non-OC.
Any ideas? Thank you for your help.

Oh one more question, what is default vcore for Q6600 G0 (1,300v or 1,325v)
P.S.: I'l try booting with only one memory stick. (when i come home from work)
would this ram http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...d=8&subcat=813
work well with maximus extreme? pairing it with q6600 to overclock to 3.4 hopefully
NO it does not. Maximus Extreme is DDR3 and that is DDR2. Just like I stated in the other thread... The Maximus Extreme only works with DDR3 and the Maximus Formula only works with DDR2.
