Unlocked for XT bios doesnt really do much cept for a few fps and some benchmarks....however 3870 will run alot better in general than the 2900PRO.

It would also appear that ATI has set the stock voltage of the 3870's despite being 55nm higher than their 80nm counterpart; that being said they OC alot better than the 2900XT's out of the box

First create a boot diskette (fat32) using Explorer
    Download atiflash
Place atiflash on the diskette (usb if you have a PC setup to boot to usb)
Place bios on the diskette (or usb)
From what I know when flashing the HD 2900XT we use:
    atiflash -p 0 -newbios xxxxbios.rom -f

there is a space between the -p and the 0

Can someone confirm if this is correct for the 3870 bios upgrade?

Get the BIOS onto a USB drive and follow these instructions to get a bootable device, also put ATIFlash on the device...

techPowerUp! :: Guide to Video BIOS flashing

Then reboot, select the USB drive(or whatever you choose to use) as the main boot.... once loaded

    Card 1 = Device ID - 0
    Card 2 = Device ID - 1

So on and so forth (depending on the amount of VGA devices present), that being said also rename the BIOS to like 3870.bin

    then type the following

    atiflash.exe -f -p 0 3870.bin - First Card done
    atiflash.exe -f -p 1 3870.bin - Second Card done

    Reboot, and enjoy

If you want to see other commands within atiflash, just type in the prompt atiflash.exe

-i will give you info on the installed devices, and whatnot.

    There are two links:
    http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/details.php?id=1000
    http://www.armada.fi/HD3870/HD3870_PLLVCO_v010.071.zip

    Both files are 64kb.
Are both the same and can be flash to the HD3870?
I asked this 1 of them has a file ext of .bin and 1 has .103.

    What is your opinion?

    Cheers

out of curiosity, i like eye candy in games and that includes physics. are the 3870 cards better in physics rendering then the 1950pro? if so, are the differences noticeable?

I used the techpowerup file, I believe they are the same though. But to be sure use the techpowerup one, and make sure its .bin.

    Glad it helped you guys

I only found 2 sellers with HD3870 and they both claim to have 40 and 56 of them in stock. IMHO, I find that a little hard to believe at the price they are charging (which is higher then normal when you count S&H charges).

ive flashed to the .71 bios, so dont think thats the problem, but it might be voltage problems, so gonna try a voltage modded bios soon, hopefully it will help

can we get our hands on the new Asus bios for the hd3870.... heres the quote about their overclocked version from fud...

Asus is definitely the first one in something, and that's the highest factory OCed HD 3800 series. The OC-ed HD 3870 from Asus will work at 850MHz for the core and 1.14GHz (2.28GHz effectively) for 512MB of GDDR4 memory. The "TOP" labeled HD 3850 will work at 730MHz for the core and 950MHz (1.9GHz effectively) for 256MB of GDDR3 memory. When you compare these clocks to reference 775MHz/1.125GHz for the HD 3870 and 668MHz/828MHz for the HD 3850.

    i want that bios.....
