Lapped core 2 duo IHS pics

I lapped my U120 Extreme over the weekend. I used knife oil to make it easier and not leave scratches. I used 220, 650, and 1500grit wet dry paper. But it is not a mirror like these. If I start to do it dry it leaves scratches. Do I need higher grit sandpaper or will it finish like a mirror if I just keep doing it? Will it even make a difference between a flat copper finish and a mirror copper finish?

Mmmk. I already checked mine with a piece of glass. If mirror won't matter than I am fine like mine is. Not as pretty to look at as these though. Heh. I was thinking of buffing it with a dremel but would hate to leave a gouge to have to flatten back out.

I plan on lapping my IHS as soon as I get off of my butt and buy some paper. I am planning on dry sanding. I'm going to cover the back of the CPU with the little black piece that comes in the retail box. I have read tons about this on lots of forums, and have decided dry is easier with the same results. I am planning on 400 ,600, 800, 1000, or something like that. My Zalman 9500 has a mirror finish on it, seriously, I could shave in it. But I am going to mark it up with a sharpie and run it over some fine grit 2000 paper and see if the sharpie markings rub right off. If not, a lapping I will go in it also. I don't recommend metal polish either. I am going to clean everything off every once in a while with some compressed air, do the same at the end, and then use the AS cleaner and polish. I'll clean up the back of the CPU, just in case also. I am excited to see what happens. I know a guy that got a 11C drop in temps simply by lapping his IHS to an 800 grit flat surface.

Whoever said that is wrong, use water and do not press on the chip at all - 2000 grit or finer.

Nice job. That CPU definitely needed it. I can't believe that first pic!! That is one hell of a concave IHS you had there.

In a case like the user above ^^^. See that copper border? The center of the IHS on the chip wasn't making good contact with the heatsink. Totally worth doing. If your temps seem unusually high there's probably a reason for it.

Well lapped both CPU and HS last night. CPU was really off in the center. After initial sanding I had a copper border so cpu was really off in the centre.
Took me about 20 mins lapping the CPU and about 10 for the HS as it was fine really. Used a hair dryer to dry cpu and about an hour's air drying.
Have to say I'm really impressed with the decrease in temps.
Under XP all 4 cores idle at 37/36/36/35 which was pretty similiar to what I originally getting under XP. However decoding a movie which originally had the CPU hitting upto 65c now only hits 51c.
Under Vista CPU now ides at 41/40c which is a 8c drop. Under load it now hits only 53c as opposed to 68c.
So overall I'm very happy with the results.

That's because a chip's never idle in Vista. Actually my HDD freaks out the most.

And you get a shiny looking chip to reflect off ordinary household objects and share in a forum on the interwebs! My favorite's the one out the window a few pages back.

I sanded my Right hands, Middle finger and Thumb a bit. Frigging didnt stop bleeding. . Yea, it was my first lap :P.

The Left hand thumb, you can see band-aided, is due to touching Hot tubes :@. Had to heat them in almost boiling water, and after like 5-6 fit's, the skin on my thumb tore off. Luckily, it didnt bleed, but the exposed skin on the thumb, was tender as hell.

Any who.. I started lapping with 400 Grit. The 1st Pic you see is after 400 Grit. Moved on the 600 Grit, got the 2nd pic from after 600 Grit.
Moved to 1000 Grit for a little sanding and flattening.
Then the 3rd and 4th pics are results after 2000 Grit, Wet sanding.

I know what that is like I get "grip-burn" from my skateboard grip tape which is pretty much like sandpaper all the time. The worst thing about it is it's not just a cut it like stings the whole time. Pretty painful, haha.

Here's a little step by step of my lap job. I have a 6600 and a Tuniq Tower, and they were ugly.

Yanking the heatsinks off after 1 month:



Hmm, looks like in that AS5 mud the IHS was only contacting on the edges and the corners

Sure seems like it here too. I think the a bit smaller than a grain of rice technique is too much also (I didnt see the line technique at the AS5 site when I put it together, but that might be too much as well IMO after seeing this.)

Yup, shiny edge pattern in the metal, no center contact for sure. No wonder it would get hot with any voltage boost for higher OC's

I'll skip the 6600 lapping, 'cause we have seen it already (and I was too busy lapping to remember to take photos, lol). But kind of important...the Tuniq is also is dished so that center contact with the IHS would not happen:



After even more sanding, still has a nice dish where you would like to see good contact with the IHS:



CPU back on the MB, with a spiffy 300 grit finish (I'm looking for flat, not pretty. That and I could only find some 300 in the garage, too lazy to buy more paper ):



All buttoned up, lets fire her up:



After doing this I dropped 5-6 degrees in TAT under Orthos load at the usual OC of 3.4 at stock voltages which my machine will do. Now for the really interesting part...bumping the vcore to 1.3875 which my machine needs to run Orthos stable at 3.6 resulted in a 10 degree drop with Orthos running. All I can say is...if you are on the fence on whether to lap your CPU and cooler, do it!

WAYYY to much paste man!!!!

2 little drops in the corners is all u need. Trust me your loosing about 30% efficiency with that much on there.

Temp drop was arround 10*c along with a lapped tuniq 120 heatsink, was lapped for me by a friend, he lapped it normally then ended up using a polishing kit that is used for fighter planes
