I don't blame Intel for it at all.

Mistake 1 - Hector has FAILED to deliver a comparable product to C2D in a timely fashion. AMD knew for a long time where Intel was headed. All they had to do was look at the IPC and clock for Dothan and then Yonah. Yet he failed to prepare his company to have a response.

Mistake 2 - ATI purchase - RIGHT COMPANY, wrong time. AMD finally had reached profitability for the first time in years (on a year over year basis). And instead of using that much needed capital to finalize plans for fabs (which in all honesty is going to be the ONLY way to compete w/ Intel on an equal basis), he steered the company to buy ATI. AMD needed the technology infusion to compete in the future, no doubt. But I believe they could have waited 1-2 years and not lost anything but large loan payments.

Mistake 3 - shafting their OLD smaller customers for the big OEMs. HP and Dell had no problems getting their hands on AM2 90 and 65nm chips soon after they were announced. But the little guys, which have kept AMD afloat all these years, couldn't buy squat because the "channel was empty." And strictly from an economics perspective that doesn't make much sense b/c the little guys don't get the same volume pricing. AMD could have gotten MORE money for the SAME chips.

And I can go on (and on and on).

Anyone else remember how Hector drove the PowerPC division at Motorola into the ground? History repeats itself.

In addition to Hector getting canned, the entire BOARD at AMD should get canned.

Actually they didnt need ATI at all. They could have done like Intel. Tho Intel now targets more than "fusion". The target now is also nVidia and high margin performance cards.

So they basicly payed 5.5billion for something they could have used a few 100mil (worst case) or less to develop inhouse.
I´m sure people thought they bought a glooming business that could make a profit. But it was a shame that ATIs main revenue and profit was Intel chipsets.

    What?
How can you blame your failure on another company?
You blame Intel for AMD failing to launch a competing product on time?
YOu blame Intel for Buy ATI at the WRONG TIME and being out 5 Billion which they could have used during these hard times...
You blame Intel for Constant delays?

Come on man, give me a break.
Intel is in this to make money. Sure they priced their chips competitively to a point where AMD had to sell them dirt cheap. Well too freakin bad, if AMD had a competing product ready to whoop C2D's ass, they could have controlled the pricing.

Not only that but remember $300 X2 3800+? AMD milked us Good, real good. Shouldn't have been this greedy... AMD should have known that their ASP is not gonna stay the same.

it's bad choices, plain and simple. Choices that Hector had control over. He made bad decisions which has led AMD to where it is now, There's a price to pay for it....sadly.

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!

    whoohoooooooo

brother essau, look back at amd when jerry sanders was the head honcho at amd.
he left amd in the best position they could possibly be in.
As soon as the work from Jerry sanders wore off amd started a downslide until today.
Say what you want, maybe its not hectors fault directly and its other peoples mistakes that lead to this, but if your head of a company and the company is going towards bankrupcy its your fault, theres no denying it.

There is a finite amount of resources in every company. It's hard to get plenty of good , experienced engineers and SW developers , make a product and attack the king of the hill ( Nvidia in GPUs ).

AMD needs to compete with Intel in :
    -high perf MPUs
-low power low cost MPUs ( Silverthorne )
    -integrated graphics
    -chipsets
    -high end graphics
    -minicores ( Larrabee , Polaris )

Basically , having 6 more people means you can do more things at once.
In my view , AMD will be forced to give up their expansion plan , cut R&D dramatically and entrench itself in a market where Intel is less willing to compete ( consumer electronics , low power , low cost products , low cost PCs ).

However, reports say that there is no set time frame for a change of power at AMD. Ruiz's 5-year contract expired in April 2007, but was renewed for a one-year extention until April 26, 2008.

omg Ruiz is going to be replaced by Dirk Meyer:
In this role, he shares leadership and management of AMD with Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board Hector Ruiz.
The only thing that changes it that AMD will stop paying Hector, other then that...

So you're thinking that AMD will have to regress back to the days of the K6 and K7, where their chips were smaller and less expensive than the Intel? Honestly, I could see that happening. But, I'm hoping they drop some ungodly great product on us, that will help level the playing field again. Chances of that happening......none. It is truly shameful what has happened to AMD in the past few years.

It's not about products anymore ; it's simple economics : money and economies of scale.

2005 was a year were AMD had a superior product , yet , financially it was Intel's best year in the firm's history.

It ultimately boils down to FABs and process size.AMD doesn't have the money to maintain itself in the process race ; they spent it on ATI.

    very well said

you cant take an underdog company and turn it into the industry leader producing the biggest most expensive and complex chips like that, and hector tried just that while CUTTING DOWN r&d, lol

Last year he was paid 2x compared to Intel's CEO.
I bet he will earn close to 3x this year. There is an inverse relation between payment and performance at AMD.
