Nvidia to miss out on holiday sales

    --------------------------------------------------------------
Culver City (CA) - On October 29th Nvidia introduced its GeForce 8800GT targeting the mid-range enthusiast segment. Demand has been high and within days the shelves of retailers were emptied of the cards. Two weeks later we are still in the same situation. Although a new shipment hit the stores last night, this supply appears to be limited. After our initial probe into the premium on the new product we unearthed more information regarding supplies.

In conversations with industry sources, 40,000 units of the GeForce 8800GT have shipped worldwide. To put these volume numbers into perspective, other sources have stated that AMD has already fulfilled orders for 250,000 of its Radeon HD 3850 and 3870 models for its launch later this week. It was stated that an additional 150,000 will ship before year end. Prices for 3800 series cards should ship between $180-220.

Sources told TG Daily that performance difference between AMD and Nvidia’s newest cards are within 10% in some cases and on par in other metrics. If AMD can deliver a high performance part for 2/3 the cost in volume, it could mean the graphics pendulum is about to swing the other direction. With holiday shopping ramping up, a lack of supply and new competition, Nvidia might be getting a lump of coal in its stocking this year.

So sad that Nvidia is having these supply issues, there is HUGE money to be made this holiday season with their 8800GT considering the enormous punch it packs while sipping on the funds from the wallet.

    Bye bye NVIDIA profits

edit: That might be why NVIDIA tanked today in the stock market...

"To exist in this vast universe for a speck of time is the great gift of life. Our tiny sliver of time is our gift of life. It is our only life. The universe will go on, indifferent to our brief existence, but while we are here we touch not just part of that vastness, but also the lives around us. Life is the gift each of us has been given. Each life is our own and no one else's. It is precious beyond all counting. It is the greatest value we have. Cherish it for what it truly is."

I somehow thing that nVidia knew that ATI had the upperhand on the midrange (As in had it planned better, more inventory, cost effective) and rushed out the 8800GT to attempt to keep some market share. Although it does perform better according to leaked results, I will not pay the ridiculous premium on it.

there is still some time left for nvidia to increase their supply...the question is whether they will choose to do it or not...

Remains to be seen. At this point there are neither GT's nor HD's on the market.

you're forgetting that there are a lot of 7-20 year olds who get their hardware from mommy and daddy and christmas is a good time for christmas presents.

Ahhh but the question is whether they will do it at a reasonable price. Not the current premium they want over the ATI cards.

Every thing tanked today pretty much, I have lost over $1000 in profits just today.

On a side note, the 8800gt is WAY to hard to find. I bought one that was a customer return yesterday. It was returned because it was Dead on arrival. BFG has a life time warranty though so I'm just going to RMA it. I also got a nice deal on it just $223. I'm going to ship it out tomorrow.
    Current Setup:
-9850 GX2's in Quad SLI config
    -Asus P5N32-SLI MB
    -2x512mb of PC2-5300 DDR2
    -Intel Celeron D OC'd to 3.2Ghz

    -WD Caviar 20GB Hard Drive
    -Zip drive
    -Jazz drive
    -3.5" floppy drive
    -5.25" floppy drive

I guess the AMD merger has finally paid off for ATI - fabrication being in house means you control your own fate... and I'm sure in-house knowledge of die-shrinks helps out as well.

DAAMIT's GPU's are not made in house, they are made by TSMC just like Nvidia's (Nv also uses UMC). Here's a link noting that the RV670 is made on TSMC process (AMD does not even have a 55nm process).

The rumor goes around that nVidia is collecting as many 88gt cards for the RV670 launch. This rumor is allready 2 weeks old, and nVidia didn't ship any 88gt cards in 2 weeks.

    40,000 GT's vs. 250,000 38x0's
I thought the GTs are already available (at least in small quantities), but no 38x0. So is AMD yet again shipping "hundreds of thausands" of non-available parts?
Don't take it so seriously.. I'm just guessing.

Those will start to sell tomorrow with HIS, and from day 16 with Asus and Saphire.

The ridiculous is that HD 3800 where not launched and if you went to overclocker.co.uk they have all 8800GT in pre-order, but had HIS HD 38xx card already on stock.

Also OEM need very large stock quantities. If a company can´t guarantee that they simply go to other grafic card.
As far as I know, DELL have a new XPS with HD 38xx and Alienware have also a new machine with HD 38xx.

That means that ATI can guarantee large stock even in Hardware that is not even launched.

Otherwise, Aliware or Dell don´t have any new machine with 8800GT that means that stock is so low that they can not guarantee stock for Aliware.
And HD 38xx was not even launched and 8800GT is here at 2 weeks.

We'll have to see what AMD will deliver for 3850/3870 launch but the 8800GT was a cardboard launch at best.
