I've moved from p5k deluxe to gigabyte x38 dq6. 3.6 is my stock 24/7 running. It's pretty similar. Further overclocks such as 8x465 is 12hr prime stable on the x38, couldn't do that on p5k. Trying various other higher clocks have found similar things.
Now this might nort be an X38 v P35 thing, just a difference between these boards who knows??

i think asus been slacking off on quality lately"i miss my old p4c800 not lol"
the x38-dq6 pulled ahead after 535fsb i just wished it was stable
overclocking past 4.2 was easier with the x38 wished it was 100% stable
but it did manage to run my memory 5-4-4-9@ 1100 with 2.3v
i do find tweaking fun but i need a working pc too
my kids get my older hardware 4 pcs in the house n i got no spare pc for me lol
if i had more time with the board maybe but after 3 weeks i gave up i had a few days left to return the board n got my refund![]()
after all i seen in the boards in the last month on x38 only dfi givin me hope to try that chipset again

one benefit of the x38 is also that it has the ability for higher ram:fsb ratios then the p35 when using DDR3. It may not directly translate to higher ram speeds, but it does mean you wont be FSB limited if you are running DDR3 faster then 2000MHz.

+1 vote for P35. x38 for me it's a big disappointment. just another "marketing product", no real PLUS for the users, no value for the $$.
Interesting read from this article
The performance of the X38 was clearly not a step above the P35 upon release. Test results from new features such as PCI Express 2.0 and true dual x16 PCI Express capable slots were not available...Even several weeks after launch, we are just now seeing boards from manufacturers other than ASUS and Gigabyte hitting the channels. It was not until this last series of BIOS releases that we would even consider purchasing an X38 based board over a P35 equivalent.

I'm having the same difficulty chosing a board.
I have 4x1GB Crucial Ballistix PC-8500 that I will be using, and a Penryn.
What would the best choice be?
Reading the X38-threads it seems there are plenty of problems with that memory-configuration.
Does P35 handle 4x1GB sticks better?
Im getting a Q9450 and will most probably get the DFI P35-T2R or P35 DK along with another 2x1GB of G.Skill HZ but im concerned about the 4x1 as well.

I actually have the same question about the highest DRAM frequency X38 can get but for DDR2 instead. I am disappointed that most P35 boards has a DRAM wall around 530 - 570MHz (I'm not talking about the C2D's FSB wall which is universally about 500 +/-10 MHz.) Yes that is a wall not your RAM's speed limit. I also learned that the nVidia 680i-based boards allow > 630MHz actual RAM speed with the "Unlinked" FSB-to-DRAM setting. If X38 still can't unleash the full potential of those high grade DDR2 chips (e.g. Micron D9's), I really don't see any value of it over P35 - if it can already waste the headroom of our DDR2's like P35 does, why bother even to try it with DDR3.
I have seen a couple of folks able to get 4 x 1GB Ballistix DDR2-800 sticks to run at 400MHz 4-4-4-12 with 1.90v on P35-based boards. The point is most mobo makers have matured up with the P35, while many X38 users are still suffering the growing pain of the new chipset (including the BIOS mixed up.) I think you'll be fine with P35 and those 4 nice sticks.
p35 runs my 4 sticks @ 1000mhz 4-4-4-12 no higher x38 i can go 800mhz but get bsod in windows
