Now the one I got back from rma is hanging with a blinking cursor in the top left corner after initial post and I can't get into the bios or flash it, so it's going back too. Not too impressed so far with Gigabyte and I have been oc'n for 10+ years.
Oh my mistake , that's tough. So far not had any issues. Yesterday i had it struggling, trying 485 fsb thought i was going to have to use the clr cmos, but it sorted itself.
    Hope you get sorted

Another thing I am noticing is a lot you guys have 2 x 2GB PC2-8500 RAM kits. I'm thinking this board has problems when using 4 x 1GB.

One of the reasons i went with the PC2-8000 kit, 4x1GB is supposed to have performance issues.

Then I would consider that to be an engineering issue on the DQ6 which needs to be fixed. As I mentioned, the P35-DS3R treated me better in this regard and it looks like the Maximus does not have this issue. I'm not ready to dump $400+ into a 4GB kit.

Back to the P35 it is.

Maximus has as you mentioned not this stupid issue.
Could not get over 1085-1100 on mem with 4x1GB on X38-DQ6, with Maxiumus 1200 was verry easy.

I had the maximus for a month, and it has these issues, wich everyone else expierienced so it wasnt specifically me...

    - cpu would not load 100% when using over 1.5v or a frequency over 3.7ghz...sometimes it depends on voltage or frequency.
    - my ram would not pass for over one hour occt ram test, even with 2 sticks
    - voltages fluctuate from 1.5 to 3v!!!! which is very unsafe for a long period of time
    - 450fsb was max for my q6600, anything over gave bsod while trying to pass occt.....no matter the voltage

overall the maximus could have been a great board if it wasnt for the stupid EPU controlling voltages and crippling the board.....overall i would take the gigabyte board over the maximus because 1 problem is better than 4 big ones....this is from someone who has used both boards for a long period of time

I know this is a long thread to read but in a previous post i recommend...

NO EXTERNAL eSATA devices be connected and powered on when BOOTING

otherwise you get the blinking cursor top left with no boot!!!

I have experienced same exact issues as you
take out the cmos again, might have to do this more than once.

I love this board, (started out hating it for first couple of days).
Now I am thinking how good this true crossfire board with 2x16xPCIe slots and two ATI HD3870 512MB's will be a killer setup.
I imagine this setup will do over 25,000 in 3dmark06!

OK, so got my cpu at 3.825 (425x9) stable, needs 1.58-1.62v tho, temps stay around 70c on load so im ok with that voltage, if this cpu lasts me 8 months im good...........anyway now i need to work on the ram, will report back when i get it running stable..........so far so good for my second time around with this board.....

    Go for f5g or f5h
I've found these two to be almost identicle in terms of stability and most memory options available
Note: the fsb not as high as f3, but way more mem options which gives you more combos to try.

EDIT: for your 4GB I'd go the f5h

I have tested with ext e-SATA hdd when booting without any problems on both my P35-DS4 & X38-DQ6.

If U do have problems it usually leads to the bios seeing the e-sata as the 1st boot-up option & tries it 1st & since there is a hdd but no OS on it, it will either give U that screen U speak of or "pls insert bott blah-blah-blah" thingy...
    Cheers,
    Minh
