2000MHz on 8800GT Memory is bad?

    http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.ph...8&postcount=13

2000MHz memory OC is easy with this card BUT the overclock won't hold long term.

The memory is actually 2GHz, but the interface can't handle the speed for long periods. This has been tested by Nvidia, their OEM's and some partners over several weeks. The card will run like a bat out of hell for a while and then suffers irrepairable damage.

Just look at XFX. These guys overclock anything regardless of yield (I guess they don't take the overhead of support into account when they sell stuff) and they're only at 1950MHz on their highest OC card (Alpha Dog).

I would only crank the memory up to 2GHz plus to get a killer benchmark and then crank it back down to 1900~1950MHz for day to day use.
What does he mean by the interface that can't handle the speed?

I wonder does this also apply for the 8800GTS ( not the upcomming), as many peeps got their mem up to 2000-2100 range..

Hmm...can we get another source to confirm this? Not saying jonny isn't credible, but two sources, especially the original, would be best.

more like a FSB that *kills* ram... "The card will run like a bat out of hell for a while and then suffers irrepairable damage"

i'm interested in what he means by "interface":

"but the interface can't handle the speed for long periods"

usually high heat and/or high voltage is what kills components, not a high bus speed

Unless the power reg isn't up to dealing with the high speeds.

Could it possibly be simialar to what was going on with the R520? ie a defective metal layering near the memory controller?

end of the day thats what RMA's are for

Sounds BS to me. I'm running 2100 so I'll see who long it last.

heh none remembers the 7900's that had a seemingly similar issue?

I wonder how many people ran and set their overclocks back after reading this.

SSC @ 2000... Would EVGA really do this knowing it was going to end in failures?

    I just don't think so.

Are all the 8800GT boards manufactured by nvidia or what?

JonnyGURU IS the orginal source. He has apologized for this off-hand comment that was taken a bit too seriously because of his reputation.

It's more than possible that they have re-worked the cards to make them capable of these speeds.

None are made by nVidia proper. As with the 680i boards that were all alike(XFX, BFG, et al), nvidia contracts building of thier units, VGA's and mobo's alike, to several OEMs. Foxconn would be #1, imho.

So is it safe or not to run the 8800GT's memory at 2000MHz? My Inno3D 8800GT can clock to this speed but I'm worried.

Well, jonny's comment was that there MUST be reason for so few re-labellers selling cards clocked at such speeds...because almost every card can easily do it, as the ram is rated for these speeds.

However, memoryspeed rating does not take into account extra heat dumped into the chips from external sources, such as a gpu. It could be more than possible for he gpu to "share it's heat" along the memory traces to the mems, and if the card gets hot enough, the integrity of RoHS lead-free solder can suffer because of it.

This would be the only problem I can forsee that would cause gradual deterioration of how the mem clocks...

I actually try to buy non-RoHS parts, and you'll find that if you take two similar-clocking parts, and switch one over to leaded-solder, the leaded solder unit will go a bit farther, due to the differing electro-mechanical nature of the RoHS solder. Good for the environment, back for clocks. If the SSC or SCC , whatever, units are not RoHS-compliant, it would explain ALOT.

Yeah but you don't see 8800GTS being sold at 1900-2000Mhz on the memory even though almost all of those can do it.

that card has different layout, and parts. Used SMD's and caps can make a world of difference nevermind how the board and gpu are designed. What applies to one vga does not apply to another...
