While I'm here, I want to ask about Linux. I have XP Pro but it's 32-bit. Is there a version of Linux I could install that has a windows like gui and is 64-bit? I don't want to spend a lot time learning Linux. I just need to be able to play video files and surf while the machine is crunching.
Just to add to what Scott and SB have already said...

    I'm a total Linux n00B and about a week ago I installed Ubuntu 7.10 64bit on a Q6600.

It just installed from the disc without me having to do anything apart from selecting region, passwords etc - GPU, LAN, Wireless LAN etc.....everything just worked. The only thing I had to do was go to the Synaptic Package Manager and ask it to install Boinc for me which it did automatically without a hitch.

There are plenty of video packages to download there too, so I doubt you will have any problems.

Serlv, Sierra and brot - thanks very much for the input. Kubuntu it is. And Ady, thanks for the little shot of Thorazine. I feel a lot better knowing that this should be relatively painless. I'm one of those people who asks the dentist for nitrous and Novocaine when I go in for a cleaning. They never give it to me, but I still ask.

You can run many Linux distros off the CD. This allows you to test-drive the OS before deciding whether you want to install it on your HDD. The biggest disadvantage to running the OS off the CD is that boot-up times are slower.

Linux tends to be more text-based than Windows. With Windows, you spend a lot of time clicking on stuff. With Linux, you have to do more typing to get things accomplished. Some people enjoy that, while others don't.

I saw something about LiveCD on the Ubuntu web site and it looked interesting. But Ady's comments clinched it for me so I'm going to jump on it with both feet. If there are any major problems, you guys will be the first to hear me whining about it. The only thing I'm a little apprehensive about is the Biostar video card. But since Nvidia has Linux drivers for the 7300GS chipset it uses, I think I should be ok. I'm a little miffed that Gigabyte tells you to go the chipset vendor for Linux drivers, but since almost everybody seems to use Realtek for embedded peripherals like audio, I expect Ubuntu will handle that fine without any additional downloads.

Onboard audio should not be a problem with Ubuntu. For a long time, there were no Linux drivers available for Creative X-Fi cards. That kept a lot of people away from Linux. The situation has changed in recent months. There are now beta drivers available.

You may not need to install any Linux chipset drivers. I used to run Ubuntu on my old DFI NF4 board. Ubuntu gave me internet access and onboard sound without the need for additional drivers.

Cool!!! I've downloaded the iso. With a little luck I should be able to start the build tomorrow night.

There are no problems with the video card. I own a 6600gt myself and my brother has a 7600gt - And both work very well in linux.
In kubuntu those should work out of the box, but without any 3d acceleration. If you want 3d then you just have to use the "install restricted drivers" tool, should be in the k-menu.

When you boot with the ISO, it will first boot off the live CD anyway before then giving you the option of an full install - so you can give it a quick whizz first

Thought I'd take a look. Just booted to a live environment; 7.10 64-bit. Very nice! Gonna take a lokk around. Of course that means this 8 core rig is not producing for a while, but gotta explore ( during commercials..., the Patriots-Colts game is on ).

I think it's time we start working towards that nice round 5 million a day.
Time to beat the bushes for some new members.
50 members at 10K a day will just about get us there or in the new math:
    one- 2/3 DDT..

    Yessir, boss!

One new system online, as of 3 minutes ago.

    It's not 2/3 of a DDT.
However, it is an additional 6.25 percent of DCManiak....
It should be good for an additional 10+ K/day.

    We'll get there.
