Sometimes I forget how lucky I am to have a good cable ISP (Cablevision). I was getting more of a delay from the default video drivers than from dl speeds or processing the web pages. I finally got around to loading the video audio drivers and there's almost no delay on a K8 running at around 2ghz.

So what's it like in dial-up land? Tell me how much it svcks. I'm so miserable I need some company. I'm exaggerating a little bit - just a bad day.

sorry to here your having a bad day!!!

As for the exaggerating part, I have 2 options one back to the old modem and dial up (26.4kbs) for like 20$ a month.
or sat (just above good dial up) for 65$ a month! price sucks but atleast it don't take a full hr to load one xs page!

OUCH!!! Talk about grabbing your ankles.

Whatever happened to dual-56k modems? I think the idea was you have 2 phone lines and one ISP account. The ISP would have equipment on their end to split the load between the 2 lines giving you the potential for 100k dl speeds. Still not great, but getting there.

DSL is such a joke - especially at the prices a lot of companies charge. I pay $50 per month for 15mbit/sec dl speeds and regularly see at least 10meg. But the telecoms charge as much or more for 700k - and even then you have to be within a certain distance from the switching center. B@st@rds!

the problem at my house is the phone lines are SO old they can only carry 26.4 for me... I hate my internet! The 26.4 is not any better then what I got but the crap I have to deal with on hughes stinks. I am only aloud to download 300kb a day. but the stupid thing cuts me off at 200 so programs like steam kills me because it takes me 3 days to get the updates!

I didn't know that satellite internet was still around. It sounded like a good idea when it first came out but knew a guy who had it and said it was finicky and not particularly fast. But he was out in the boondocks of north Jersey and POTS lines were strung with cat gut and piano wire - you got better quality with 2 cans and some string. So it was the only game in town.

did you mean 300k or 300meg? An HTML email is a few thousand kb all by itself isn't it? But even then, that's just wrong. Even if you use all 300m every single day, you're paying 1.4 cents per meg.

I'm sure you've considered this, but I'll menttion it anyway. Most cell providers have unlimited data plans on 3rd gen networks that supposedly get up to 300k - like Verizon's EVDO network. Even if you're not technically in range, you can at least get a high gain antenna and cellular amplifier that should increase your range by several fold. Don't have much experience with it, but someone here has to.

yeah I mean 300mb. sorry about that!

I have thought about the verizon idea but the problem is I don't get service at the house and I got me a high gain antenna but no amplifier because I don't have the 300$ it cost for one. ok so not quite 300 but they cost way to much. I dont' know a lot about it but I know a guy that does it.

Do you get Verizon or Sprint cell phone service?

Edit: Sorry, just read your last. Cell service seemed like the fix. You get none?

If you already have Verizon I would try out thier internet service. 1.5 mb I use it everywhere. Just a thought but I do use it w/ 1 shaky bar.

There are single band amps for around $200 - see http://www.cell-phone-accessories.co...hl=en&sa=title . Dual band are a little more. See http://www.myelectronicshome.com/har...ifier-343.html

Might be able to use your existing antenna if it can handle the wattage.
I think the Verizon unlim evdo plan is around $60/month - so aside from the equipment, you'd actually be saving money. Supposedly evdo goes up to 2000kps, but even if it's only 300-400kps, you'd still be in broadband heaven.

If you know someone who's familiar with the equipment and could help set it up, it would be worth trying. Plus you get a thousand geek points for every antenna you plant on your roof. You can't beat that.

I finally passed 2 million points and I'm just under a hundred results away from 5,000 results. Unfortunately, only about half of those points go to XS. Oh well - a misguided youth.

Oh well, as long as you have repented and seen the light, we won't hold it against you.. Just make sure the next 10-20 mill are logged under Xtreme...

Your transgression will gradually become smaller as a percentage of your overall total points, as time goes by....Although, you could always throw on a couple of quads to make it go faster....

    Regards,
    Bob

I'm working on it. I want to put a system on the rack with my tv but I don't have a lot of space so I'm trying to find a case that will fit but which will also be able to handle a TRUE 120 (6.3 inches of clearance). So I need a very short tower case or a desktop case. But all of these are mini-atx - the decent ones anyway and the m/b I want is ATX. A few more days on Newegg and I might get it sorted.

What about one of those little short cubes that LL and others make?
Frim the outsideside they look to have the clearance. Haven't seen inside measurements..
Now if they don't work I have an extra SM cube that will fit anything you need and also room for your dining room table!
Identical to the one pictured down to the quad P3 xeons..uber tech!

I checked that out but the height is about 20 inches. The best I'm going to be able to do is about 14 inches - and even that is going to be a pita. It has to go on the bottom shelf and right now that only has 12 inches of clearance. I can lower it a little to get 13 and raise the one above it to get to 14, but that's it. I'd go with a cheap desktop case, but I'd like to have at least 3 fans plus the PSU.

I'm at a loss to think of one that will work outside of a 4U or will a 5U fit?
Hard to find but they do exist.

    5U=8.72" in height..
Would this work with a 120mm blowhole or 2 added?

    Then check out this beauty:http://www.jsp-tech.com/_english/2_p...12&hProdID=189

I use their S360 or T360 which is also a beauty for my little kid's rig, but that one is only micro-atx. The one in the link has also great cooling capabilities, i built already 3 media centers with those, for friends, and they love it.
The T280 is only 5.5 inches tall.

Thanks, but 5.5 inches won't work. I really want to use a TRUE 120. I can probably just lay a mini tower on it's side, but I'd rather not. I think Movieman might be right at looking for a 5U rack mount. However there are some nice micro-atx cube cases that would work and a gigabyte m/b that i could probably live with.
