Intel shows off mobile quad core CPU

Intel claimed the chip contains 840 million transistors and will run at a power envelope of 45W, slightly higher than Intel's mainstream TDP of 35W, meaning that the extra performance is going to come at an understandable hit in battery life. Intel said it is on track to launch the CPU in the second half of 2008.

Interesting but no mention of clockspeed, cache, or FSB. Even a few details would be nice as otherwise this announcement is a "duh"

2.5Ghz LV serverchips is 2.5Ghz/1333/12MB. So something around that I guesss

Quad Penryn is 840million, Quad Nehalem is ~731million. Mainly the 8 vs 12MB cache.

On 45nm process and 1.066GHz ULV, it shouldn't get hot.

More cores don't mean it's going to get harder and louder though.

My Pentium-M laptop (1 core) runs hotter and louder than my merom (2 cores) laptop.

Anyway, LV quadcore will be great for WCG and powerbill.

I just used it as a 45nm reference-point since it obviously packs quite some punch at that thermal envelope.

thats wrong. i like to game and i run WCG in which case 4 cores will help me out. and it's way easier to take it places compared to my desktop and at idle it will still have all the battery i need. so i will be getting a quad core lappy for sure.

Forget laptops, I want one for embedded use. I just wonder how long it's going to take to get a proper embedded board, Santa Rosa embedded boards are just now starting to appear.

bad the sad thing is it won't support quads and a little bit of battery is nice. however i still really like how you can change almost everything and make it a fast lappy

4 cores in a laptop!

That's cool, but I only use my laptop for surfing, email, a couple of older games, etc.

I can see how a tech on the road would like the extra cores. Although, I can imagine that 'core throttling' will come into play? Shutting down unused cores completely until they are accessed? Maybe i'm retarded, but it makes logical sense.
