Thumbs up Windows XP SP3 goes Vista-ish

    From TechAmok:

According to NeoSmart Technologies Blog (->google cache), which is among those who have received the first version of Windows XP SP3 build 3205 as part of the Windows Server 2008/Windows Vista SP1 beta program, SP3 has more than 1,073 patches/hotfixes including security updates. Among these are a few things that have been backported from Vista including the new Windows Product Activation model, Network Access Protection modules and policies. There is also the new Kernel Mode Cryptographic Module so that the kernel now includes an entire module has access to multiple cryptographic algorithms and is available for use in kernel-mode drivers and services. It also has the " Black Hole Router" detection so that Windows XP SP3 can detect and protect against rogue routers that are discarding data. Looks like XP is becoming a much better alternative to Vista, again. (thanks TheInquirer)

I posted this question in a thread in the coder's corner but maybe I can put it here too. Does anyone know if SP3 will be available in the October Action Pack OR if you have an action pack subscription, can you get SP3 license codes as part of your subscription?

Anybody know if x64 XP will be getting LLTD support? Or if x86 will be getting GPT support...though I'd prefer x64 getting LLTD.

    Allow me to speculate:

System resource usage will rise with at least 50% (from 70MB -> 100+MB) on a newly installed OS that has SP3 slipstreamed.

"There is also the new Kernel Mode Cryptographic Module so that the kernel now includes an entire module has access to multiple cryptographic algorithms and is available for use in kernel-mode drivers and services"

..I will investigate this very carefully before installing SP3.

"new Windows Product Activation model, Network Access Protection modules and policies."

If thats an annoying thing that says "are you sure you want to use this? - really sure? - really really sure? REALLY SURE IT COULD BRING THE DEVIL AND GIVE U AIDS" popup every time i want to do something like play quake wars then i'll pass.

Wonder if this sp3 will enable the bringing of dx10 to xp though

If this is as good as it sounds and has the ability to bring in dx10 for both x32 & x64 versions, then vista is dead imo.

Even comp noobs like my friends and my dad hate vista.. Only reason enthusiasts want it is dx10. Everyone hates vista and xp has been out so long its become flawless, never has an ms os had this timespan between releases before.

Not true, there are those out there who think it is really neat and like it a lot. I know of some on here that really like it and prefer it generally over XP.

    I'm the sweeping generalization nazi

I'm still an XP user due to the fact I've got no money to upgrade and no reason to either (DX10? I only have a DX9 card anyway!). I used Beta 2 of x64 and generally liked it, true being a beta it was rough, and driver support at that time was nil, but it wasn't bad at all. And that nagging "you sure about this?!!" can be turned off

No, XP will never get DX10. I still don't know why I see people posting this stuff. Get over it already, if you want DX10 you have to get Vista. Vista is actually quite good these days and performance is at or very near XP in DX9 games.

bullcrap, i call complete and utter bullcrap. i have vista on my laptop and it works great so far. only problem i have with it are crappy nvidia drivers for my GeforceGo 7900 GS but that is not microsoft's fault

and DX10 will never come to XP like DX9 does not work on 98, it simply will not happen. why would microsoft do that? it would only make them loose sales on their new product and most of the complaints of vista's speed and compatibility have been fixed recently. the only thing left really is the new menus and start menu that can be set to classic easily

Vista is not bad at all. I got a free copy of Vista Business and perfer it over XP. On my Quad Core, 2GB Ram machine its very snappy and runs fantastic. My only issue is with my attempts to O/C my Quad, but I think its a motherboard issue and a vista issue.

    Check this out.

Display driver problem solved, my E1705 with 7900GS Go works perfectly since I started using hacked INFs.

Other than requiring better hardware, I see no major problems in Vista. People constantly about Vista, but most of the time I find that they have yet to even try it other than at Best Buy on some crappy system. When installed on a good system, it's more stable than XP, at least for me. That goes for both my desktop AND laptop.
