G92 is 8800GT 512mb

Personally I have a hard time believing they're talking about the 8800GT card as at 65nm and 110W if the numbers are correct it won't need a good cooler at all and still run cooler than current 8800GTS cards. Besides 8800GT is a midrange, definitely can't be classified as "next gen high-end" part at least.

I wouldn't be too sure. I've seen results that put the performance of the GT above GTS, yet the cooler is a single slot solution with a "paddle fan." I'd love to upgrade to a GT, but not until some aftermarket coolers hit the streets. I've gotten used to two-slot cooling solutions, so something that really works for cooling that takes up two slots is going to be a welcome upgrade to me. Yes, I can see the advantage of single slot solutions for some people, but I've gotten over the whole need for additional PCI slots a while ago (in other words... I caved in to the frustration and now "settle" for a lot of onboard crap.)

Seems like the 8800GT cooler has 3 heatpipes so this whole overheating thing is probably in cases of bad case airflow.

"G92" having heat problems is Charlie's way of saying the next highend, G90/NV55 or whatever it may be, is having the problems.
I don't see the real G92, aka midrange card, having heat problems if Nvidia has already decided on a release date and the single slot cooler.

It seems like more GeForce 8800 GT card photos have surfaced online as seen in our forums and apparently another website in China got the inside scoop. This time round the PCB is black in color, which looks better than the reference green PCB. The GPU heat-spreader looks the any other G80 series and the rumored die size of G92 is 289mm2 as opposed to ~480mm2 of the G80.

I'd be willing to bet that's the case. Note the complete lack of any stickers, components, etc. on the back. It also looks like a very early version of the fan-sink.

I call shens on that set of photos. Maybe a mechanical sample at best.

i find it odd that you can't see the traces on the pcb and i agree with you that i think its an early version too.

since when has that stopped people? in the case of the Wii, if the chip has the 2 leg's missing you dremel the chip away to expose the wires... (or so im told ) so im guessing that people would just do that too

In regards to comments made regarding the apparently deficient single-slot cooling solution: My question is, what mid-range card comes with above-average OEM cooling? Has anyone here ran a 7900 GT under heavy load for any length of time with the puny stock cooler on most of those? I wouldn't even dare try. Interesting: The card in the front & back pictures on page 4 of this thread looks just like the EVGA 7800GTX ACS3 Edition. I was happy to see that the placement of the GPU is the same distance from the interface end as the 7800 GT/GTX & I would bet that an NV Silencer 5 will work - I hope so, since I have one sitting on the shelf. The only possible concern I can see with the NV5 is if the memory controller heatsink (presuming it has one) gets in the way of the where the thermal pads touch the RAM on that inside section, but I don't think they will. If it does work, Arctic Cooling could start offering the NV5 again. Of course, I have had great success with the Vantec Iceberq 6 and it would work on this card without a hitch.

It's going to have to sit on the shelf longer. It aint gonna work.

Outside of the general proximity of the GPU, the general layout of the card is completely different. Not even the fan sink mounting screws are in the same place.

Just the GPU goles line up, sure. But you're going to need to cool more than that on that card (the NVIO, memory, VRM's) and there are obstructions that prevent the use of simple stick on memory-sinks on. Remember: A 7800 GT doesn't have the NVIO chip and the VRM's run much cooler than an 8x card.

It will definitely be worth waiting for the 512MB 8800GT compared to buying a GTS320.

I'm on the same page here, I bought a new NV6 for $10 just coz I had a hunch.

The NV Silencer 6 is smaller and sits only on the gpu, leaving much more space for ramsinks and such....

The NV6 does appear to be a more flexible option. I had never seen one of those before - they look just like an ATI Silencer 1 with a narrower heatsink surface. For only $10, I think it is a risk worth taking.

Anyway, I didn't figure it was worth continuing the discussion about whether the NV5 will work, since none of the advanced images let us see the bare face of the card. Since they did not follow the reference design used on the 8800GTS/GTX cards, it's a toss-up. If the NVIO chip has a stand-alone heatsink, similar to the HSI Bridge Heatsink found on most AGP 6600/6600GT's, I do think that it will work. But if it is integrated with the GPU/RAM heatsink, maybe not. I like to mod, so I am hopeful that a solution is there.
