    Damn it 8800gtx appears dead

so i messed up but i dont know how the card was killed.

basically i powered the pc on but couldnt hear the pump so i unplugged the ATX cable and shorted the gree+black wires to trip the PSU. but i forgot to unplug the 2 pci-e power cables from the GTX. pump worked fine so i undid the short circuit.when i plugged everything back in i get a high pitched squeek that lasts maybe a half second then nothing. tried replacing the GTX with my 7900gs and the system runs fine so definitely must be the card. tried pulling the cables and using 2 different pci-e power cables(tried adaptors rather than the PSU's ones). still the same.
    hopefully XFX will RMA it.

would you expect this to kill a gfx card, getting power from the PSU?

Possible that without the rest of the card turned on to regulate stuff it could have fed too much power to stuff and killed it. At any rate it sure seems like it is a goner, however it may have happened

hmmmm, how come I didn't kill my card with that method? I was previously using a dedicated PSU for my video card in which I needed to power it on through another motherboard because I didn't know how to short it..

    1. turn on the PSU for my BFG 8800 ultra OC
    2. turn on my system

If I forgot 1. the card will squeel on me..

and how come the card will feed current to its components if it wasn't even on..
