    Overclocking difficulties q6600 G0 bfg 680i

Just got my new SLACR processor... G0 stepping and all

    Installed.. cleared.... boots fine...

    2.4GHz.. all flawless..

Overclocking... I can't get past 2500MHz for this CPU.. no matter the voltage...

    Previous settings

    E6600 @ 3.6 normally 3.9@ 1.55v and 3.8max stable. Max temps where 58C with a 28C ambient or so...
    PQI 800MHz 4GB @ 2.1v
    BFG 680i reference board
    Dtek Fuzion MCR320 MCP655 pump.
Vista X64 Rock solid with the E
As you can see.. a good overclock overall...

with the q6600 G0 i simply cannot get it to overclock.. System hangs.. reboots.. BSOD, boots and/or drivers do not load.

In the end.. I can only boot at STOCK MHz.

My goal is to achieve the 3.6GHz and it looks to be VERY VERY possible...

Now .. do i have a REALLY bad chip that simply CAN't OVERCLOCK?
I have tried bios P26,P27,P28 and P30 with the same results...

    Any help is appreciated.

Looks like your board is one of the 680i boards that cannot clock quad cores.

uhh... WHAT ? you swapped the nb and sb heatpipe cooler/fan for the same thing? - they are both reference boards that are made by the same fabricator (Foxconn if I recall right) now if you swapped them for waterblocks I might not be taken aback so much(at all) but you are talking about the 680i not the 680i LT ?

what are your voltages /settings ? that may help us / to help you

I swapped them from the EVGA video cooler which is round.. like the old orb.

Voltages.. I have tried them all

    fsb 1.4-1.5
    spp 1.3
    mcp 1.55
    ht 1.25
    ram 2.2

I also had those when overclocking the core 2 duo. Funny... when i woke up today.. PC was off... it had never happened before...

We'll see.. .but is the whole so huge?

I saw that EVGA did a replacement of the A2 revision board for the A1.

Yes i did.. Actually I found where to change the multiplier... It was somewhere else that i didn't remember.

    I tried jumping FSBs

1600/800 x6 @ 2.4GHz did post but vista would crash.
tried 2800MHz 1800 or so... same deal
removed 2 sticks of ram... same result... Guess board is faulty.. PERIOD.. no way to overclock a quad with it...
Right now I am 1066/800 as its all in AUTO.

if there are any other suggestions before i do the RMA change i will appreciate it.

    no its not faulty
    this is normal
you need a newer revision to get higher.

My P5N-E SLI cant even do 350mhz with my X3210 Xeon and thats a 8x multi so i am stuck at 2.6ghz until my P35 DS3R comes friday.

try clearing cmos, after u re-seat the proc.

680i is very finky, i would either bug bfg for the newtest possible revision. Or just sell the board, and get an X38 here in a couple of weeks. Alot less headaches

    unless your running SLI=/

I will run SLI soon... just need a bit more money and/IF crysis needs it...

    I have an 8800gts 640mb

What do you mean re seat the processor?
Remove the processor and reinstall it? X23 isn't cheap.

if your board doesnt have the words D00 on the end of the serial, its one of the old boards and cannot overclock the fsb much, maybe 350 max......make sure you have the newest p30 bios, make sure your vtt voltage is at 1.5, spp 1.4, and mcp @ 1.6

if the serial is the middle of the board and a sticker.. it ends on different numbers.. i have on the VTT 1.5... i'll check the others as well... Im on the p29 bios and thus far is the best that has worked...

I am 2600MHz... so i was able to break the 2500 barrier with the p29.. we'll see.

    Another update...

If i disable two of the cores.. it works fine... even booting @ 3600MHz...

Would it make any difference to do the 1333MHz mod on this chip? maybe solve some issues?

Another update... exchanged the CHIP.. still same issues...This one gets a lil farther than the other one as far as booting goes.. but same issues.. it MUST be the board.

RMA the board, there is a better version out for quads, it's not the best, but is better than what you have.

Ok.. i got my rma number...

Question... They say the board must be completely unaltered... Removing the Heatsink and fan count as being altered?

    They don't do cross shipping
