Lapping Q6600

Lapping my G0 Quadcore pretty soon, also..... is there any place that sells those black backings that come on the chips? I need like 2 or 3 of them... I ran out from selling my Chips, and some have worn out b/c I used them for lapping previous ones lol.

I have an idea... how about someone start selling some replacement replica IHS tops for us who like to lap the cpu and then when we require warranty service we simply stick the stock IHS back on as long as it looks like it was never taken off then Intel wont care lol

well my guess the reason nobody sells that is because its glued to the chip and half the time when you try to remove the IHS you rip the cores off. That would be MY best guess lol (not to mention the individual numbering printed on the top...)

If you have a very good chip and you really want to go with some extreme benching you will most certainly not care about warranty Beside that, how many off you got a dead Intel because o/c and bench? It is most likely to kill it while attempting to remove the IHS that when you are o/c-ing it. So, if you have a little overclocking gem, you really want some lapping, And when you sell it, you will sell it to somebody interested in o/c and they won't care about the warranty. But if you just have a home CPU that you plan selling later for an upgrade or something like that, you may want to keep the warranty so it is better not to do any lapping. Just my thoughts

Load: Core1: 62C, Core2: 60C, Core3: 56 or 57 C, Core 4: 60C

After lapping @ 3.51

Idle: Core1: 40C-42C, Core2: 42C, Core3: 36-37C, Core4: 38C
Load: Core1: 50C, Core2: 50C, Core3: 46C, Core4: 48-49C


Amazing that's all i can say, F*&*K Intel. They should charge me $5 extra next time and lapp properly for me.

Great results, much liower temps but how much did it help your OC? I dont see it listed.

2. 600 Girt SandPaper.(Home Depot or Lowes) $ 2.17
3. 1500 Girt SandPaper. (Advance Auto Part or PepBoys) $ 5.17

Youd have probably got better thermal conductivity with rougher finish, like using coarse paste on glass, or rough emry. There are loads of articals about this, but generally a mirror finish acts like a sandwitch, roughness allows peaks to crush, and dips to be filled with paste.

Lapping did not helped overclocking but reduced the temperature a lot which means stable CPU in any condition.

Did mine the other day due to bad temps and uneven temps across the cores (7c difference between core 0 and core 2!) with an average of 58c load iirc @3.6ghz under water. The IHS was worse than my e6600's the edges were raised and the centre was also convex which would have been ok for e6600 but not for quads. Its not in my system yet as I'm waiting for a PSU so I'll report back with any differences found. Here are a few pics of the results after 30 mins of lapping.

Hey Ic3man, how did you get the mirror finish? I just lapped mine last night. Started with 400, 600, 1000 then 1500 and still has light scratches. And only 30 minutes? Spent 2hrs working on mine. Any info would be great, thanks!

anything under 1500 is too course for polishing which is what will end with that kind of finish, which by the way iceman is awesome.

i lapped my cpu a bit, but only just started to get the copper. however i lapped my heatsink to the same finish and enjoying temps of 19 idle (not overclocked).

if you put that processor under the microscope the surface would be very very flat with vew valleys and pits. the duller the finish the worse they are, deeper and grainy. hence the need for paste. i found you need less paste with a better finish. when i lapped my heatsinks i only used 2400 paper, using lower grades are just eroding metal until you decide to swap to using the higher grade.

dude, just stop right there. Don't preach on an online forum about something you have no idea about. Intel has no way of knowing whether or not you have OCed your cpu.

I can't understand why it should take more than 30 mins tbh. 5 minutes on each grade is all that required. I applied a fair bit of pressure on the initial stages to rid the plating and then simply switched paper when I thought that that grade could do no better. I did not use water btw and just blocked the little outlet with some masking tape. This is the 6th Conroe/Kentsfield I have done tho so I am a little bit more comfortable with it and so have had some practice. I find I get better (shiny) results lapping it dry rather than wet.

I fully intend on making a comparison before and after and will post up the results as soon as I get my rig built up (dual loop watercooled mountain mods btw). Although its gonna be difficult to compare coz the ambients will be a little off so that will have to be taken into consideration.

It also helps having decent quality paper - I now get my kits from ChilledPC (UK)
