GA-P35-DS3P and GA-P35-DQ6 Fix for mushkin XP2-8500.... Now mostly verfied

    Hey all,

I was talking to Geoff, Greg, on the mushkin forums.

For most users updating their Bios to F5 and Resetting the bios by choosing the option "Load Optimum defaults" will allow XP2-8500 to work correctly.

I am not 100% sure as I am still running my Gmch at 0.1+ but I can now run all my mushkin sticks ( I have quite a selection here) at the correct timings.

    I am currently running XP2-8500 2x1024MB at 2.25V 5-5-4-12 @1066

Be aware that updating your BIOS without Resetting to defaults or Load Optimum Defaults will result in an uncertain configuration that may not be stable.

I have 8 motherboards here and I can now verify that this was true for 8 out of 8 boards. 2 of those being DQ6s and 6 being DS3Ps.

    Update...................

Standby now occasionally works..at least when tested 10-30 minutes. It fails when you leave the computer in Stand-By for an hour or two.

I noticed previously with the F4 BIOS that I could pass memtest, Othos worked and the machine was still semi stable at 5-6-6-15, but standby never worked.

Now with F5 memtest passes, othos passes, its stable at 5-5-4-12, stand-by is flaky.

Later next week I ll verify if adding voltage to the Gmch is required or not at the default FSB.

    I suppose this is progress.

I think I sang praises for this board to soon.

I have nothing but one instability problem after another with it.

Last night I loaded Windows without any problems. Today I go to load some games and FSX locks up within 5 minutes of game play. I even tried relaxing the memory timings and that still doesn’t work. The hard locks are similar to what you get when you’ve reached the limit of a CPU overclock without a voltage increase. I get the screen freeze along with high pitched squeal. Is it possible that this board is under-volting the CPU?

Tonight I tried another OS install and now I can’t even make it through the Windows updates without it blue screening.

I think I should have stayed with my gut feeling and went for another Evga 680i board.

After about a month of 24/7 crunching at 3969Mhz I started getting random reboots. I had to end up backing it down to 3930. I tried more voltages, different RAM etc. with no luck getting it back stable at that speed or any speed higher. I dont know what is wrong with it...

is there a set fsb tool that works with the gigabyte, P35-DS3p ?

good to see this mobos doing up to 16x multi on Q chips and reading die temps correctly in the negatives

How much did you guys pay for your mushkin RAM? I ask because we dont see many mushkin users in UK. I believe its because they charge UK users 3 times what you pay in the USA.

Maybe someone can help me out here.

So today I shut down my brothers computer with the P35C-DS3R and then later I tried powering it back on, and it doesn't boot. No lights, no fans, nothing is turned on period. So to make sure it wasn't my power supply, I did the jumper trick and the power supply turns on fine (fan spins, fans connected to it turned on, etc.) So now I'm wondering if it is the motherboard that died. Is there a good procedure to test out if the motherboard is dead and not some other component?

First unplugged anything that is not necessary like HDs with no OS, fans, PCI cards and DVD/CD player. Then try to reset the bios. If it doesn't change try other RAM. You could also try another PSU becaus it may be able to turn on with only fans, but not enough juice for the CPU + VGA. Finally if you have another CPU try it, or try your CPU in another mobo.

After you tested all the other components and it still doesn't work, this is most probably your mobo which is dead

for those not knowing what it is, its just eh p35-s3 minus raid and what not, there is also a ds3l with the ss caps but not raid
    Redundant question:
Do i understand this correctly the gigabyte boards allow to run a 1:1 divider with a 800 mhz FSB cpu?

    edit:
Oh sorry, i found out that someone already asked this question. here

So there are no issues with the s3l board and overclocking a 800 MHz fsb cpu? I ask because my mem cant go much over ddr800

I had to increase the cpu voltage to keep it from random rebooting.

I have a tip for you if you want som ekiller SuperPi.
If you set RAM to 1:1 with the setup in this picture: your image.
Then I'm sure you get half a second off or so. I have tried the difference between 1:1 and ASYNC and you really need som killer high RAM to beat the 1:1.
Actually I did not beat my own record with 1:1 even when reaching 1250MHz on the RAM.
So either you get 1:1 or you get about 1200+ to get the same result.
Hi Klimpen i just get me a pair of killer ramsticks and they sure do way over 500 1:1 they are much better than my EXTREEM mem, but now i sold my board for incoming GB X38 so i must max my mem on that board in a while

Haha 800 MHz FSB, I doubt any board on earth do that

I think what you mean is 400 FSB to run your DDR2-800 in sync with the CPU (RAM frequency = 2 x FSB at 1:1 )

I think we can say safely that any P35 board should do 400 FSB without problem. Mine require +0.1V PCI-E to do that tough.

Either MCH or FSB voltage mess up my PCIe rate. When I increase one of them my PCIe rate drops to 1x. Hard to bench then. Good it wasn't the FSB itself that caused it. P35-DQ6

Got the same problem with my DS3P but it's definitely the FSB, once i hit 400FSB PCI-E x1 is what i get only happens with F5 final. Hope Gigabyte realizes this and fixes it soon in another bios.

Did you try to set the PCI-E clock to a fix value instead of auto ? There was a problem on the earlier revision of P965 in the PCI-E lock. Might be a similar problem.

I have an P35 DS4 with the F3 BIOS. My system also includes 4 SATA HDDs (2 of them are in RAID) and has two 1GB GKX Crusial RAM units and a 6300 cpu at 3GHz. The bus ratio is 1:1. My video adapter is an EVGA 7950GX2. Is it possible for me to upgrade to the F6 BIOS for better performanse or F3 BIOS is better??

I have the same kind of temps. Like you, everything I can touch is warm but not at the point where I can't live my finger for a long time.

Thus I don't really care about it
