Very nice job Ace... I will surely do this when my heatsink arrives. This mod, with a pressure mod and MX-2 paste should, and better keep my Q6600 cool.

BTW, what are you using exactly between under your X bracket for added pressure?

As well, which fans are you using exactly on your TRUE and do you find the stock fan clips hold a 38mm thick safe and securely? If the motherboard was mounted in a case vertically would the same hold true? Thanks.

thanks for the compliment...side covering was not my idea but the painters tape was!..it works great ...easy to cut and sticks with no problem at all....and...you can pull it off easily to readjust the alignment.

as for clamping pressure for the Ultra 120-X, i saw another guy using a large size washer...that method works extremely well...my washer is 1 1/2" in diameter with a 3/8" diameter hole...i super glued it onto the brace leg...i centered the washer on the bolt or screw head that holds the "X" brace legs together...a smaller diameter holed washer will not work since there is a washer beneath the bolt/screw head on the X legs....a smaller diameter hole would sit lopsided.

the fans are panaflo FBA12G12U type which are 2.75K rpm..the 2.5 or 2.1K rpm fans should also be good.....both fans are on the Uguru fan EQ controller so in idle conditions, the rpm is down to around 1.6-1.7K...hardly even notice the sound even on the workbench....of course, i have gotten use to hearing "many" fans for many years now.

EDIT:...as for the 120 fan clips holding power, they work fine...just bend the pointer part (tit part) of the clip with your pliers so it can dig further into the screw hole...that will give you more clamping authority.

I purchased a modded Ultra 120 x that I lapped to 2000 grit and the seller was using a Canadian penny with the center drilled out in order to add pressure to the mount.

It works PERFECTLY.

You can probably save some time and effort by just using a nice thick washer instead, but to each his own.

The penny works like a charm. (And it's copper....heh heh)

As for the airflow mod posted by Ace (Thanks!) I was wondering if there's any particular reason to use painter's tape or if it's just for aesthetics?

LOL ...i just had it on the garage shelf...hehehe...i presume you could use masking tape or other tapes as long as it will maintain its flexibility and adhesiveness.

although this stability test run is outside of the case, it shows you how well it works for a Quad at 3.9Ghz...of course, the other part is that the processor is a "G0"!

did you find taping off the top and bottom of the heatsink provided lower temps then just taping off the sides?

do not have any comparison but i could feel some air (not gushing) coming out of the top of the push fan.

these little tweaks are going to probably affect the temperature by about 2-3C the most....but hey...every little tweak is at least lowering the temp instead of increasing it.

Has anyone tried this with a single fan setup? I'm thinking there'd be on net gain since the idea is to dissipate the heat... anyone comment?

here's the effectiveness of this easy mod...besides doing everest at 3.9ghz, i could do prime 95 at 3.8ghz for 14 hours and 53 minutes...could have gone way much longer but i got bored and wanted to return back to idle conditions.

i did the prime for that long because two guys were not believing that everest stability test...so...i took them on...still they haven't produced any prime results for their overclocked "G0"...i think they are just a tee-bit envious of many sporting high overclocks on their "G0" processors...they overclocking at "B3" levels.
