Exclamation Ultra X3 1600w Power Supply Review

That 12v figure of 117A is not a typo, this unit is really billed as having 117A available on the 12v rail. That single 117A 12v rail is good for ~88% of the units total DC output if a user could ever find a way to load it that much. We also see that the unit is capable of an additional 160w on the 5v/3.3v rails. Now come the caveats to these impressive specifications. This unit is capable of 16000w DC only if you are using the 20A NEMA 5-20R AC cable and have a dedicated 20A circuit. If you do not, the unit has a normal 15A NEMA 5-15 cable with a circuit breaker in it to keep the unit from drawing more than 15A AC. This limits the DC output of this unit to ~1200w-1300w DC but was necessary for safety approval by UL. While some people might be able to find clever ways around these limitations, HardOCP cannot stress enough that users should not attempt to circumvent this restriction in any way.

We have 2 where I work (Micro Center).

Somebody should buy one. We've had one for a few weeks now...the other just came in the other day.

I wonder how many people are tripping 10A to 15A breakers using the PSU?

Come up with a list of components you'd need to take advantage of having a power supply that can handle a load at over 1500w.

Now...make a list of how many people you've ever heard of with that kind of setup.

Now ask yourself the question "How many people are tripping 10a to 15a breakers using this PSU?"

Very few. The people that are tripping breakers are trying to test it.

I trip my breakers daily but it's because of old wiring, several AC units and 3 PC's

wouldn't depend on countries' AC mains i.e. Australia 230-240V AC should handle it on our regular 10A circuits

Here in the US its 110V AC and most 10A-15A breakers has about 5 outlets and a light or 2 on it so its everything that is pulling from that breaker the computer is on. There is more on the breaker then just the system.

This unit is capable of 16000w DC only if you are using the 20A NEMA 5-20R AC recepticle (and a 5-20P cable) and have a dedicated 20A circuit. -edited slightly for clarity

The NEMA 5-20P looks like a regular 5-15 but with one blade at 90 degrees.

1600w is just too much. 800 - 1000w is probably the most you'll ever need...
"To exist in this vast universe for a speck of time is the great gift of life. Our tiny sliver of time is our gift of life. It is our only life. The universe will go on, indifferent to our brief existence, but while we are here we touch not just part of that vastness, but also the lives around us. Life is the gift each of us has been given. Each life is our own and no one else's. It is precious beyond all counting. It is the greatest value we have. Cherish it for what it truly is."

It's an ULTRA, expect it to be $19.99 after a $250 rebate at Fry's in two months.

[H] The good news is the Ultra X3 1600w is easily capable of producing ~1600w DC but the extreme load it places on the infrastructure of a user’s house or location is an issue.

a psu thats too much for the house... i dont know... honestly.. anyone else think thats jsut a bit too much? and who needs 1600W anyway?

Quick thought, how many people are running a couple of PC's on 800W PSU's off the same wall socket? Same difference, no?

Plus that's only if you draw 1600W, and as has been said countless times before, that would take some doing.

I wouldn't mind getting one if it's around $100 after rebate.

yep but by that time I think there will be a revision model of this PSU supporting the king 2kW rating it was originally intended for if I recall..

Yea, but it was not UL approved because it exceeded some kind of amperage limit.

If the circuit isn't tripping I'd say they aren't pulling 800w each at the same time
