    Asus P5KC (hybrid DDR2/3 mboard) + CORSAIR 4GB 1600MHz DDR3 + 2GB PC10K DDR2 test

    hey guys

i got some DDR3 ram for testing and thought i'd pair it up with an entry level asus P5KC board for initial tests

i didn't see too many people test this board and certainly no 4GB kits heheheh w00t they are sexy beasts

    TEST SETUP
    • Asus P5KC Motherboard >> updated to latest 0701 bios
    • 4GB kit Corsair 1600MHz 7-7-7-20 DDR3 RAM
    • 2GB kit Corsair 1250MHz 5-5-5-18 DDR2 RAM
    • Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 L626Bxxx CPU
    • Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 L727Axxx CPU
    • PCI nvidia MX400 GFX card
    • Thermaltake Big Typhoon + 100CFM Panaflo fan
    • 60GB IDE MAxtor HDD
    • 620W Corsair HX620 PSU
    • Windows 2003 Server 32-bit

CRAZY HOT area >>> i burnt my finger on this son of a

    VDIMM MEASUREMENT POINT

    Here is the RAM

did some tests with Asus P5KC

board had a lot of quirks that's for sure but i managed to squeeze a bit out of it anyways

for some reason the board was booting at 1T command rate lol and there is no option in bios to change it

btw vdimm measured with multimetre 1.9v in bios = 1.88v load >>> 2v in bios 1.98v idle load in windows
ram didn't seem to respond to higher voltage but i think this is the board limitation and not ram... as i've seen it go higher on blitz

no tweaks besides largesyscache >> on std server 2003install

i didn't even notice the last shot was on performance level 9 TIME is still pretty good lol

anyways that's as far as i got atm

    RAM & board notes:
with a bit of tweaking of subtimings and actually run some Spi tweaks i would say around 900 7-6-5-20 would be about the same as 600 4-4-4-x

2GB kits should do that with eyes closed but 4GB kit may be harder

i must say testing all these boards leads me to believe that DDR3 boards leave a lot to be desired and need work on bioses....blitz is the best at the moment though >> shame i couldn't have mine for longer than an hour and i certainly wouldn't go buying this board with the pricepoint it will be at EEEEEEK

in terms of Asus P5KC i don't know about u fellas but i took some photos of the phase coil that burnt my finger idling....sitting next to the 4-pin connector

i would definitely not buy this board unless i have a sample

and also my P5KC droops bad

I tested a quad core first and jacked it up to 3.6GHz with 1.42v idle but after about 10 seconds the vcore just starts dropping bad and reboots the machine. I thought it may be too much load from the quad CPU and stuck my E6700 CPU in there >>>>>>>>> 1.36 in bios, 1.336 idle windows and under prime it keeps dropping to 1.31/1.29/1.27/1.26/1.25/1.24 i gave it a couple of strokes where pencil mod is supposed to be NOTHING

so it seems that it ain't the quad core load afterall but just voltage regulation on the board

i must say after testing that other value board and finding out how impressive it was i am pretty disappointed in this one particularly with how badly hot that area was and droop issues even with a quick pencil mod which made no difference. I was expecting the bios to be a bit more problematic because it is a hybrid board but geez i couldn't even post my PC10000 sticks past 550 WTF :wired: and i am really surprised i even managed what i did with DDR3 >>>>>>I didn't check but i think the maxing out of DDR2 might have had something to do with bios setting 1T command rate at default........some more investigating is necessary

lol i really should get memset 3.3 beta2 for command rate as well

did some testing on the weekend with a Gigabyte DDR3 DQ6 board and also at the end of the day with Asus Blitz DDR3 board

i had A LOT of problems with the Gigabyte board. It needs a fair bit of work to clock DDR3 ram properly. I could not even post at stock timings and clocks......and what's worse i could not post with up to 2.1v CAS9 or 10 can't remember now at stock MHz ROFL

i'm sure they will fix that though. I spent most of the day battling a crappy dice tube and windows installs and then the board lol so i just did some quick max clocks on CPU and some 1Ms

times are bad as it would not allow me to reduce performance level below 9 and this is as fast as i could really get the RAM regardless of timings or volts but i don't bench 4.8GHz every day so it wasn't a waste afterall

Josh told me he had a blitz somewhere that takes DDR3 (almost at the end of the day zOMG and asus was definitely much better in RAM clocking....i was posting at around 950MHz CAS8 but FARKING HELL THE CPUz 1.40.8 does not take validations with F7 shortcut

so nothing to post here guys

for some reason asus could not bench past 4.6GHz >> something strange there >> no luck at all ROFL.....i had two boards one that clocked RAM poorly and got half decent clocks on CPU and one that clocked RAM MUCH better but clocks on CPU hahahahha

blitz was superfast in 32M compared to gigabyte but i didn't have time nor CPU clocks to do some nice numbers but it looked promising >>>

one thing is for sure i really need a blitz or P5K3 (with volt mods) to max the RAM and i am waiting for a really nice DICE tube i ordered from Duniek so when all this comes together it will kick arse

on thing i do have to say is that DDR3 really gives you so many more options at higher FSB and i think benching with high speeds and FSB is a must with DDR3 >>>> just need to beat up someone for a nice board like the blitz or P5k3 and maybe another DDR3 2GB kit to compare and max out clocks and timings for some serious superpi damage

i have a great CPU for SuperPI that's for sure......even with terrible base temps on the dice tube -50C i was still able to pass 5GHz barrier

i think that DDR3 boards have a little while to go before some solid bios files come along but Asus Blitz so far was most complete

    DDR3 is 2.2v
DDR2 i have to double check but i think it was 2.5v or 2.55v

    nice tests dinos

do the vdroop mod what I posted in my thread, works fine, try it

what ic's are on these corsair's? for me the 1333DHX don't goes in P5KC same bios..

ok now not sure which one to believe....probably memset i guess lol

i don't think those runs were 1T that have that listed in the CPUz window afterall

    here is why

i downloaded a beta2 version of memset and found it was actually showing 2T for command rate .... i think CPUz one is just a software glitch as it only shows command rate sometimes....it's weird basically lol

with that out of the way i did some more SuperPi testing

listed runs at 3.6GHz SLOWEST TO FASTEST

    i had largesys cache on

the rest of the changes are RAM and FSB MHz differences and RAM timings

at the end i tried maxmem which made no differece (600 value)

so i still have some tweaks to do like wazza and others....in terms of tweaking i also have 1T to do and performance level = 7 with better motherboard

823MHz runs should be as efficient as 600 4-4-4-x DDR2 when tweaked properly and with 1T and PL=7 at 500MHz + FSB

5:8 RAM divider did not let me boot at Transaction booster = 1 regardless of FSB
2:3 divider did (hence that makes these runs a tad faster )

PAY ATTENTION TO THESE TWO SHOTS WHICH I AM RELISTING

one was done with lower FSB and tighter timings (PL=6 EEK) and higher MHz
    than the other

HIGH FSB RUN WAS STILL A LOT QUICKER

Good review there are some interesting results That is a very nice cpu you have there, with a good cpu & ram clokcing ddr3 board it'd be a bench monster

i've gotten rid of the mobo as it was pretty crap particularly with the quad with over 0.2v droop under load even after pencil mods lol

my next test will be with X38 chipset DDR3 version
