no, it's the standard. Every time I have someone wanting a computer, I say "what's your budget?"

They always follow up with $500 or $600. I just cringe at the crap heap I have to build.

The low end IS the standard, and it always has been.

By not releasing benchmarks for Phenom X4 or X2, AMD is hurting their core business in ways that are unimaginable and they don't seem to care about stemming the tide. All I or anyone else is asking for are some numbers to stop the Intel steamroller. I love AMD and would love to support them, but how can I in good conscience tell my customers to buy AMD right now?
Some years I've built half as many, other years a 3rd. But absolutely the same per cent-age. There's no way in hell I'm believing folks are as dumb as some Geeks here try to pretend they are. Most 65% of these folks are on their 4 or 5th computer with another 25% 2nd or 3rd. That doesn't mean each user is an expert but they're NOT clueless either. They want a cheap price, it works so they can perform their *lite tasks and how long it will last. I replaced a lot of dead TBirds BTW.

I cringe at the crap heaps that local PC builders sell.

They'll sell gamers a generic PSU with no second thought

They'll also sell them a computer with a 7600 GS as well. Depends on who gets to define "gamer."

"Originally slated to have appeared earlier this year, the official launch will now be the second week of September."

Hey what happened to August 27 according to DailyTech? Another "bump"? Or is desktop "launching" sooner than expected?

well, at least they're giving us dates... and they're not that far away. If they're that close, that means all of the imminent problems were taken care of.

AMD Preps Partners for "Barcelona" Launch
AMD's next-generation launch date is still set for "summer 2007"

AMD is set to debut its third-generation Opteron server processor architecture later this quarter. The company publically announced its upcoming launch next month, but the company's latest processor guidance, released just this week, states otherwise.

    Ouch.

So, 1.7 to 2.0GHz DVT *samples* going out in august, with prod parts in Sept.

Then, in Q4, they hope to sample more in October, presumably launching late in Q4, along with Phenom FX:

    68W 2.0GHz
    95W 2.1-2.3GHz
    120W 2.4-2.5GHz

No 2.6GHz until Q208 at the earliest.

Looking at the hoped-for samples for Q4, I see indications of process problems. Look how much the power bin needs to climb to get from 2.0GHz (68W) to 2.4GHz (120W).

    Not good.

Harpertown will wipe the floor with these parts. Even Clovertown will.

    Okay, first don't make assumptions.

Second, Clovertown going from 2.0ghz to 2.4ghz increases power consumption too.

What assumptions do you think I'm making?

We know clocks of both lineups, we know (from AMD) that the IPC of the K10 core is roughly that of 65nm C2D core, we know about AMD bandwidth advantages in multi-socket systems...

Of course Intel parts are going to require increased power with higher frequency. My point was to notice the very large power bin jump required for a very small frequency increase in the K10.

It may happen, but you can't say that it will now, because we have no performance results of K10. You can't say the benchmarks from a few months ago, because they're old and may be inconclusive now.

Small correction to the other guy. Q6600 has a TDP of 105W, not 120W and that's the old stepping the G0 is lower. Q67xx is 130W. AMD and Intel have always improved their steppings during each Core's life-span.

Indeed, G0 Q6600 is 95W as well as raising the "thermal specification" from 62.2C to 71C. But wrong, QX6700=130W but Q6700 is 95W http://processorfinder.intel.com/det...px?sSpec=SLACQ .

AMD said these will be the same or lower TDP as current X2 parts, so it look like faster parts simply can't be done within specs.

    $$$$$$$$

Better to sell 10 processors at $1000 each, then 100 processors at $50 each.

AMD Phenom Processor (Barcelona) Pre-Launch Update
As the official launch of the AMD quad-core Opteron (Barcelona) processors in August and the desktop Phenom processors later this year draw close, AMD is rapidly ramping up media coverage of the new Barcelona core architecture. You can count on more media coverage and updates on the new Barcelona-based processors over the coming weeks.
