    Apogee GTX custom plexi top

Don't like the mil-spec super duper plated Aluminum top on your GTX? Then make a custom GTX top.

    http://forumdeluxx.de/forum/showpost...ostcount=28708

That is very nice. I wonder if there would be a market, that perhaps Petra could exploit, for machined delrin tops?

Hehe, I told Gabe back in January but he won't listen to me. There is a market for tops that are NOT aluminum.

Yup, was thinking this myself the other week when I was discussing with a shop owner about more custom products and we brought up some plastics other than delrin that may look great also.

He had the idea of just doing tops, in order to walk before running I guess and I straight away thought about the GTX as had one sat next to me.

If it ain't watercooled, I don't wanna know.

Heck, those guys even machined in the ridges and whatnot. I would settle for a plane jane version. I can't imagine they would be that expensive.

Maybe Petra can whip up an order from the same place that does his custom DDC tops. If so, I'll be first in line. Nik, can you guestimate how much one would cost based off of what you paid for the CNC time for the delrin res?

I'm not really worried about the AL, just prefer the look of delrin or plexi over shiny plated metal.

    edited for dyslexia.

I think petra has stated he wouldn't be interested in making a top, as he said "don't look at me" in the GTX thread when users were asking about different material tops.

If it ain't watercooled, I don't wanna know.

That was my thoughts exactly... I suspect this plexi top is only applicable in a flat base o-ring arrangement.

From what I understand from the link posted in the first post is that this was just a test.
All done in 3 hours. And done in plexi because it is faster.
The real top should be in copper.

I can't seem to find it at the momment, but I did see an in-progress picture of their copper gtx top, still being milled. It looks great too.

I think there are intellectual property issues. A couple of patent lawyers will shut this guy down quickly if he ever tries to sell his product. I hope Gabe filled for intellectual property rights in Germany. No problems if it is for his own personal use, or he makes them for friends and family.

It would have been nice if he didn't make a 100% copy just in different material.

Just the fact that the person posting is showing an e-mail address of an enterprise can get him in considerable civil trouble. If the fabrication was for his own use, then why show a commercial e-mail address.

He's not from China, where the govt. doesn't give a crap

If I were Gabe, I would shut this guy down... like right now.

From the looks of it, they may just be making replacement tops, not entire blocks; so anyone using it would need to have purchased a GTX already. But then again, I don't speak german so I'm just going off of the pictures.

IP is only broken if the product has been copied for the purposes of selling or re-distribution. Or if other proprietary information is released. I work for an Reverse engineering company, where we use laser scanner and surface modeling software. So I know this stuff pretty well.

So this guy can make all the tops he wants, and he can show us these tops as amny times as he wants. But he only is breaking the law if he tries to sell them. Remember if you buy something, unless you sign a contract, that object is yours to use and abuse to copy, cast, or RE as you see fit.

Well, I've toyed around with the idea... but, considering the quantity that I would need to have machined to make it cost effective and/or resellable at a reasonable price, it's just not something that I can see happening.

I would buy that top in a second and then add a cool LED like they did.

I don't understand what IP rights would be violated by selling a top? How would this be any different than any other aftermarket parts. I am going to replace the starter on my car tomorrow, you think Ford is going to sue Bosch for making it?

Unless he slaps on the top, calls it something else, and sells the block as a whole - he isn't doing anything wrong.
