i had cleared the cmos etc...thx for the helpful comments

it turned out to be the motherboard....
i may have damaged the nb chip
    i have p5k vanilla now 0603bios.
and both my old 4300 and the new 6850 are
okely dokely it seems....not sure if i damaged either chip with the 'faulty' striker ...need to run full tests b4 i know for sure.

    a fool and their money...

i just didnt think the new chip was bad...so that left the mobo as the culprit.
    i've removed the cmos battery...strikkkker

I know this is a 6850 thread but anyway...

6750 running 3.2G (2.66 stock) max temp 45C after 2 1/2 hours of orthos. Mind you I haven't had the need to turn the heating on in the room ...

I have a good feeling this chip can take a whole lot more but I'll set it up on 3.2G for a week to see how it runs in the real world.

@adamsleath - sorry to hear, I like these boards too for some reason
    LianLi PC-V2000B+ mod to fit PA160 & PA120.2, ASUS Striker Xtreme - Bios 1303, 2X 8800GTX XFX cooled with EK-FC8800 GTX - Acetal blocks, e6750 cooled with Storm Rev2 @ 3.5Ghz, EK NB/SB & Mosfet blocks, XTC cooling 4Gigs of Ballistix 8500 @ 1000Mhz, 2X loops with DDC-02 & petra tops, 1/2" to all components, EK-Multioption RES 150 per loop, BigNG & Analog Sensor Hub controlling all 120mm & 80mm Nexus & Panaflo fans throughout, ST85ZF PSU, 2X 74G WDRaptors, 2X500G Seagates, X-Fi Fatal1ty
    I went 1303 to get more than 449 FSB - currently I'm on 500 -

Looking forward to your results with that e6750

Hey adamsleath those damn POS 680i boards are all buggy IMO and when you have a crap chipset + Anus your only asking for trouble
lots and lots of cores and lots and lots of tuners,HTPC's boards,cases,HDD's,vga's,DDR1&2&3 etc etc all powered by Corsair PSU's
