so basically your best chance at a good OC is the 6420, if your on a budget.

Using P5B 1.04G with 1202 BIOS, using all auto voltages except 2.1V Vdram, I pused the FSB up to around 375 (my Corsair 6400 still well below its rated speed) before it started giving me problems. So, I upped the Vcore, the Vnb, Vfsb, all the settings up to 2nd highest. Got to 380, but thats about it. Wont go any higher.

I heard about some overclocking "hole" between 360 and 400, and that 1333 bootstrap takes effect >400, so took the big leap of fait and tried 401 and 410 to no avail.

Perhaps reached the limit of this little CPU? Tried all over with 6x multiplier, and got to about the same place, 380 fsb, no more.

Tried desperately randomly toggling settings like static read control, and TM... nothing.
Anything obvious you guys can think of that could be causing this?

    Smile finally...

well, been working a lot on this one, and it won't be my 24/7...
vcore and nb needed a HUGE bump for 3.4.

had to up vcore from 1.37 for 3.2 to 1.525 and NB 1.45 => 1.55...

here's the pic and the system

It might be cause you've got 4gb there. 2gb should be stable with lower volts but dont quote me on that

You can see the orthos loaded temps in that pic^^.

    Here's TAT temps:

dude that's freakin awesome! You got a sweet chip there.

What kind of cooling are you using? (i'm assuming water by your avatar)

What is the max you have gotten your chip to do on stock volts?

I wish it was a rule to have a sig in this forum. What are your system specs?

Yeh, it's a damn good chip.

    Aircooling , Scythe Infinity

At stock volts of 1.35, it went upto 3.35-3.4ghz but i was busy testing 3.2ghz at 1.3v so didnt run orthos but gaming and everything else was stable at those speeds

I am using the infinity as well. I can't believe you are getting such low load temps. Must be real cool in the room or you have an air conditioner in your case . What about the mobo and RAM? What are you using?

No air condition, Just the room is very cool. When its hot, load temps reach 44-47deg(TAT).

Hey guys, how hot is your NB on your P965 when running stock 266fsb, and when overclocking (ie 400+)?

Even at stock mine is certainly 60C+ (scorching to the touch)...

Thats pretty freakin hot. I show mid to high 30's at idle and mid to high 40's under load. I would suggest removing the heatsink and reapplying a good thermal compound.

edit: Those temps are with 1.3v going to the NB and FSB@400.

How did your chip do man? I just got this in for a clients pc, the mobo i'm sticking it in dosn't have crap for OC options so I won't really be able to tell what it'll do.... L704A882 .... Hahaha very close to yours.

If yours clocked well, i'll order my customer a diff one and keep this one

I've had 3 DS3's a P5B-E and P5B-deluxe and the best thing you can do - remove the NB sink, clean it apply AS5 or ceramique - reinstall and add a 50mm fan to the top. After that they just barely get warm and you wont need to pump the NB volts up either

One of my DS3s needed mad NB volts and was hot as hell, like 50 @ idle. I did the above and it was 35 idle and 40 load afterwards and went to 507 @ stock volts Now I dont even bother running stock, I immediately pull it, clean it and fan it.

Btw my L709 can run to about 3.4 @ 1.35 volts orthos stable , 3.712 is my max orthos right now, 3616 is my 24/7.

On the run in the screenshot, the actual voltage is 1.525v.
I have the worst vDroop in the history of computing.
    Well......not quite......but pretty bad.

The upside: I can never feed too much voltage to the CPU. The BIOS tops at 1.6v and the most I can get from that is about 1.55v actual, which drops another 0.005v or 0.01v under load.

The downside: I may actually never know how high this E6420 will go.

The downside Part Deux: The NB max volts in the BIOS are limited to 1.4v, which also denies Max OC attempts.
The highest I've gotten into Windows on with this Mobo is 3580Mhz.

Nice clock. I doubt that CPU will last long with that much voltage going through it though. You must be using some serious cooling on that for a load temp of 37C.
