Same. I prefer a cheaper and more color coordinated alternative.

    I have some questions.

    1. So basically the radgirlls that come with Thermochill rads are flimsy and bad quality, right?

    2. Aren't the A.C. Ryan radgrills compatible with Thermochill rads and is it safe to use their templates if you are not going to use their girlls?

    3. What makes these Chilled PC girlls so special, how much are they going to cost, and what's the difference between mount and mountless? Which do u all prefer?

    Thank You.

    1. They're poorly made, that's all. The quality just isn't there

    2. No, they're not. Supposedly, they were supposed to make a Thermochill-compatible grill, except that never appeared.

    3. They fill a niche---there aren't any grills made specifically for Thermochills (other than their own grills). The difference between mount and mountless is that with mount grills, there's an extra set of holes for you to attach the grill to a case.

Yea, they are fine quality, but i dont like the design and they arent black and dont have the extra mounting holes.

If that isnt 3 good reasons to make my own I dont know what is .

Some input needed from people if you would

The thermochill rads come with number 6 x 1/2" screws to attach fans to the rad : FAN/GASKET/Into RAD.

Now I want screws to go through GRILL/CASE/Into RAD. 1/2" i think may be a little long as obv the grill+Case isnt as thick as the fans and gasket.

Would 3/8" be a better length? 3mm shorter.

    Thank
    Tom

Measure it... stand ruler on the radiator core, measure distance from core to surface of fan-mount point. Add on thickness of average case material, then thickness of grill. Knock 2mm off to ensure you definitely won't hit core. The final total is your screw length.

i'm not arguing that you shouldn't build them (i'll be buying one myself ) just arguing against those who say things like the origs being flimsy, poorly cut, things like that
after the PSU i'm planning on watercooling the ball bearings in the fans...

Depends on what you compare them to, being as nothing else fits the thermochill rads, the only way you can compare the grill to another is if you have owned any radiator that fits the ACRyan grills.

Quite a while back IIRC, Marci posted that there were a lot of quality issues with burrs on the grills. Mine was exactly like this with burrs, and was the reason I first designed my own grill which was a one off cut that then turned into what Tom wanted.

Feel free to correct me there Marci, I may search for your post to find it.

Its probably one of those items that was produced by Thermochill just because of demand. Marci said thats how the shrouds came into production.

If it ain't watercooled, I don't wanna know.

Yep the above is correct - folks kept emailing asking if ACRyan grills would fit etc, and none of the grill-companies seemed to want to churn out a design compatible so we had to do our own - as it goes we resolved the burr issues, but then the LaserCutting company that we used decided to start releasing them with laser-flash marks on the surface also, so things had to be done. We've since gone to 3 other laser-cutting firms, all of which have said the same - they can't guarantee that there'll be no laser-flash marks on the surfaces of mirrored steel. The originals certainly aren't flimsy - I can say that for sure. They're more rigid than more or less any other grill out there as they're steel, not aluminium. Yes, there were quality issues with the laser start/end points on some batches... these are all issues that we've been addressing and looking for a solution to for a month or so.

We've since experimented with various other materials and plates, but the overall finish hasn't been satisfactory, thus we're currently in the process of changing over to powdercoated grills and doing away with the mirror/chrome finishes.

Bugs the crap outta me that some UK Metalwork places just don't seem to get the idea of a finished product going for retail sale, and that aesthetics are the prime concern on items such as this. It's the part that UK Manufacturing seems to fail to grasp. They think if it's made of metal, it's getting painted or plated and thus finish quality is almost irrelevant.

These are shipping sometime this week, although Tom suffered a minor set back in that the place he was getting the screws from discontinued the all through 1 and 1/2 inch screws. Sourced some more but made the order a bit late I would have thought.

Not sure whats shipping where in terms of you guys over the pond, Tom is the man to speak to about that.

What you say, rings a bell with what I remember from the thread you were first on about. I'm sure I bought my grill a long time ago, thats why it probably had the burr issue.

I'm not sure what metal Tom is cutting his out of, but it must be one that suits the laser cutter down to the ground. The finish of them without the powder coat as seen earlier in this thread was impressive.

We wonder why UK manufacturing is going down the pan, cheaper labour in the tiger economies and the will not to produce quality to encourage paying more. Even Ford are cutting their losses on Branches in Warwickshire etc.

If it ain't watercooled, I don't wanna know.
