Drop to 7 x multi ;

This gives me with my girlie's pc around 1.38 volts, I would try ( if temps permitting to up to 1.5250 eg could be you have one of those bad batches of CPU that need loads of voltage to run stable at 3.4 ghz , but lower cpu multi to excluse the voltage factor, board should be able to run 400FSB...

Memory Voltage: 2.4v -- try 2.275
1.2v HT Voltage: 1.4v -- some users had succes with 1.5 here but my board hangs then...
NB Core Voltage: 1.5v -- is this one adequately cooled with an extra fan or sorts ?

Thanks Leeghoofd for quick reply, I have tried all above (even 1.525v on cpu), no post at all, in response to:

NB Core Voltage: 1.5v -- is this one adequately cooled with an extra fan or sorts ?
I am using stock cooling in an Antec P180B (good cooling case), would you recommend I remove and reapply thermal compound ? I also have the Thermaltake mini Typ90 with satelite fans, would one of these help over the NB ?

Have you dropped multi to eg 7 too ? and upped FSB to eg 1700 ? so 425 Mhz, does it post ? It might be the NB becomes too hot due to bad thermal pad... it should post at least stability in Windows is another thing... I removed the thermalpads on mine but left the protective mousse on them
and applied some Arctic ceramique paste...and I made a shroud for the PWM's and NB

http://users.pandora.be/OAP/Hardware/Cube/newshroud%20002.jpg

For eg 333 FSB

1.2v HT Voltage: 1.35v
NB Core Voltage: 1.4v
SB Core Voltage: 1.5v
CPU VTT Voltage: 1.35v

When I go up too 400FSB

1.2v HT Voltage: 1.4v
NB Core Voltage: 1.45v
SB Core Voltage: 1.55v
CPU VTT Voltage: 1.50v

for 450mhz

1.2v HT Voltage: 1.4v
NB Core Voltage: 1.5v
SB Core Voltage: 1.55v
CPU VTT Voltage: 1.55v

some users even go up to 1.65 for 1.2 HT but my board locks up then.. what's the read out of Asus probe in Windows eg with 1.5Vcore set in bios ?

I did try the x7 multi, and the x6 multi, the system won't even post, no beeps, nothing, i juts have to press restart button!
I think I'll retire @ 365fsb, atleast until I take off hs on NB and have a look.

Thanks guys.

Hi madwelshboy

Look, I have pretty much the same system, I mean, also in a P180.
At the moment, I'm waiting for my new PSU to arrive, since my enermax 480 couldn't pull it of, or either died on me... but I have also ordered 2 HR-05's for NB and SB, in order to maybe gain some OC.

I'm even stuck at 350 (8 x 350 : 2800 mhz stable oc)

I tried various things, and was able to post on 3.6 once... 3 or 3.1 stable for win loading, not ofr orthos was also possible... but I didn't dear to push NB and SB and VT and VTT too high without cooling.

On the cpu I have a scythe ninja rev b with fix-mod for better pressure.

I'll get back to you when the new PSU arrives with news on how the NB and SB cooling affects performance, although I have the feeling that for me it's a crappy C2D (L710) that limits me.

On the other hand, I also noticed not just FSB holes, but major holes. If you dare, try upping fsb with another 50 or so, just to get you past 400 (lets say 405-410 range, so you don't have the chance to hit the 400 hole). Its possible...

Good luck trying, check here maybe after the weekend, since I don't know when the PSU will arrive, and still then I need some time to bench

Cheers, r0n1n

New PSU just in... had time for some testing.

Conclusions:
Former PSU bad... this one delivers, but with an awfull lot of noise... think it's PFC is faulty, some more testing, and then... RMA (! )

HR-05 on NB = gr8. Temps dropped +/- 13°C

My Vmem was holding back my OC Now from 2.8 => 3.2 stable , working on 3.4... also, Vnb up a notch. 3.2 is not by far, but I'm glad I rounded th 3 Ghz barrier after all. Thought that I had an extremely crappy C2D, but it's not that bad after all...

I there!

I've got some BIG problem with this mobo.

After 2 month with auto setting for: 425x8 (E6420) @ 1,5v, my mobo begin to ... freeze I can't use it with my setting and now I must tweak properly my bios.

So I realy need help, wich voltage must I apply for:

E6420 @ 8x425 (1700Mhz)
Crucial PC8500 @ 1200 Mhz

I understand nothing with LDT Frequency and so on ...

Thanks in advance

You can try these settings, but have you verified if it ain't the ram that's degrading (that's why I suggested running them at 1066Mhz ), I really don't want users to tweak ram and co so far for 24/7 use at eg 2.3 or more volts, things will degrade and coudl be having probs like you, these settings are usable only if you add extra cooling on ram, PWM and other hot spots on ya pc... the ram is foreseen to run at 1066Mhz , 1200mhz is doable but you will have to give more volts and co and you are running it way beyond specs...

Also never use auto voltage when overclocking , why ? because the bios sets values that are sometimes not needed ( way too high) and it could also burn out ya chipsets... and it isn't the fault of the mobo manufacturer it's your fault because they guarantee stock clocks anything above is not under warranty.... the risk of overclocking...

been doing a lot of reading about this board as I've been offered one. I've got a P5B at the moment running my 6300 at 3.2ghz stable on water, do you think there would be any performance increase for me if I did upgrade to this?

Nope don't expect much of it , maybe it can tweak ya ram a bit more but the hassle to get there and the perfomrance gain won't be worth the effort, I would only suggest a Nvidia based chipset if you need SLI...

I had a P5W P5B Striker and now the P5K, I still prefer the Intel chipsets over the Nvidia , as they are more stable and way easier to setup... P5W was amasing for starters but limited to 435 Mhz FSB here, then a P5B Dlx amasing overclocks but clock for clock comparison the P5W won every benchmark, Striker next up , great stuff , hard to setup , works fine now after numerous bios updates but still some main issues ( 4 gigs with some dimms, quadcore overclock issues,...) and now I own the P5K, this is a rocker but also some isues with raid and some S-ATA drives...

Stick with ya P5B if it's a good performer, don't be fooled by marketing and hypes (like me lol) if it dies get a P35 chipset unless like said before you need SLI

try using 1.55volts on your NB, try 1.55 Vcore, 2.2volt on the memory, CPU VTT Voltage: 1.55V, 1.2v HT Voltage: 1.50v, leave the SB voltage at 1.50v ( it doesn't need to be upped)

I needed to raise my 1.2V HT and CPU VTT too to get some nice clocks. Does anyone maybe have an idea of a safe voltage range, how far may I go? And are there any components that suffer due to this, something that maybe can be cooled better?

First of all: BIG THANKS for have take time to answer me

Second: I've just set this setting, I run orthos now and I tell you if something goes wrong.

For the ram, yeap indeed, more than 2,3v is too much I think so I've set default setting at 2,2v ... There is a 90mm fan on the modules hein ^^ but are you sure for the 5-5-5-5 timing? Not 5-5-5-15?

Anyway, I think it would be better for the life of my compo to run the CPU at 3,2Ghz, but there is a fsb whole at 400Mhz, and my multi is 8 :'(

The motherboard is ventiled by a desktop fan so I think it's cool

Oh god ... again and again and again FREEEEZE :/ Hope the RAM is out of cause, this is not mine ^^

But all works 2 month but since few day, freeze ... Chipset burned? EDIT-> I've set the memory on the EPP spec and it don't freeze ... for the moment :s

I try this, I think it would be more raisonable:

Timings: yes, that would prob be 5-5-5-15, typo I guess

8 x 400 hole: try 8 x 402 or something like that. I don't know about the NB straps on this Mobo, but for some other asus boards, asus put the strap change on 404, not 400, so even @ 402, you should be running at 1333 NB FSB I guess.

Crashes: also check your PSU.
And I don't seem to get (orthos) stable at 3.4, have tu up my NB and Vcore some more tonight... cooling is def. an issue, but with a HR-05 on the NB, it stays at 42-ish max. So I have some more headroom, how bout you?

I did some comparative benchmarks around FSB 400 and I coulnd't find anything like a strap change.
Freezes, so far, had to do something with the additional board voltages in my case. Sometimes CPU, but most of the time it was one of the other voltages. Too little NB voltage normally led to a reboot rather than a freeze.

After some test, I thougt it was my RAM.

Indeed, 8x375 and ram at 1066 (EPP), and FREEZE
8x375 and ram at 800Mhz all right ...

So memtest 'cause I was effraaaaid and it's OK the modules are fine ..

I've read somewhere the 2,4v on this chipset kill modules :s I've set this voltage one time for bench but .. Arf nevermind, memtest said OK ^^

I continu the exploration of this HARD mobo

For the cooling, there is a big desktop fan who spit in the case so I think it's good

So you also did a memtest at 1066Mhz for the ram and no errors then ? my Striker sets my TRC wrongly it's set at SPD at 22 and the Striker set it at 18...

Also have you tried eg FSB 333 ( so 1333 ) and 1066Mhz ram , also lockup ? have you tried the other dimm slots ? Really weird as the OCZ kit works nicely on my Striker even at 880MHZ 3-3-3-9 1T at 2.3 volts...

Too bad each mobo is different and settings vary, also you claimed it worked fab before and now it locks up so it migth be that the NB chipset is degrading ( too much voltage given due to the auto setting ) and putting less strain on it via lower FSB, Strap or ram speed might keep it goin... try plz the 1333FSB with 1066mhz ram speed see if that works... also updated to the latest bios 0602 ??
Question : Why do some overclockers switch into d*ckmode when money is involved

Remark : They call me Pro Asus Saaya yupp, I agree

Bios 0602 got same problem and now I use a special one directly from Asus itself =P the 0702

I try 1333Mhz but which voltage for the chipset and others things? All auto?

Your theory about degrading the chipset is realy possible I think ...

I use Crucial modules right now, not OCZ bye the way

If memtest report no error, the modules are absolutely OK?

Oh my ... yep at 333Mhz and memory at 1066, freeze :s

So what now?

Lol, about that... some more questions, to rule out some possibilities...
What PSU are you running, and if possible, try another one. Also, use the 8 pin connector, not the 4.

Can you give us some temps? And what thermal paste do you use? I supposed it's applied correctly... but you never know.

1.5 on the NB is gonna get it pretty hot, do you have some aftermarket cooling on that?

And have you tried 'lowering' , yes, lowering both 1.2 VT and VTT? In the beginning, it read 1.5-ish ofr me, and system was unstable. fixed this by dropping to 1.2-ish on the 1.2 of course

Keep us informed, and many thanks for the upped bios ... we'll probably all give it a try tonight I guess...

btw, would you mind if I throw it on the asus P5N32-E SLI PLUS forum too? I know some guys there are also waiting for something to happen in the bios area... but I'm not gonna run with the credits and will not do so if you don't want to

OOOOOH MYYY GOOOOD

All stock, mem at 800Mhz: All OK
All stock, mem at 1066Mhz: Orthos said OMG ...

Dead modules? Memtest said OK AAAAAAAAAAAH I'M GONNA KICK THIS STUPID COMPUTER RHAAAAAAAAAAA

Aboute temp', Stock cooling for the moterboard but with a desktop fan who spit in the case, so everest said 32° max for the mobo (after playing) and 29-30° in idle.

The CPU is cooled by Zalman 9700, so 30° idle and 50° full at 3,4Ghz (1,5v).

The modules are ventiled by a 90mm fan at 2200 RPM ...

For throw the bios on an official forum it's not a realy good thing ... Give them this topic link but if you give the BIOS, it's not from me =P

Guys is it really possible that using an 8pin connector instead of a 4pin connector to power the MB could increase stability?

If so then please tell me, I will order an 8pin converter.
