So it should be a good overclocker too, right

Anyway, I ordered one, results are not coming soon, need a mobo / mem / psu / vga / some money

As always with overclocking... your mileage may vary - but I would assume it should be as good.

Damn it. Dnottis you have your 709 up to 3.6 with relatively low voltage, yet my 709 A5xx needs a whole lot. That sucks.

Will do the vdroop mod to see if it helps, but I doubt it.

    Cheers,
    Mike

is that Orthos stable at stock volts? I can boot into Windows at 3.2ghz on stock volts and run Super Pi. Orthos stops after about 20 seconds.

Had a chance to do some more testing today:

Yea I got really lucky with this one. On the DS3 it only needs 1.40v actual and on the vdroop modded p5b-d I need 1.47v. I'm trying to break 3.7 orthos stable now for the OC database on Hardforum. I get about 2hr 30min in and it reboots on me. Jumping up the volts to about 1.55v actual its looking good so far, but I need at least 4 hours to prove it's stable.

24/7 will be 3.6 @ 1.44v tho. I just reworked my loop and put a D-Tek Fuzion in to replace the original Apogee I had.

    Same thing happened to me.

I also had my voltage where you're at right now and Orthos would die at the 2.5 hour mark.

Bumped the cpu voltage up to +.87 and did a 10 hour Orthos no problem.

I can run Super Pi at 1.42v @ 425x8 -- but Orthos craps out in about 10 seconds. My guess is I would need about 1.5v to be stable at that speed.

    dnottis: Nice rig.

Sure enough Orthos stopped after about 2 hours. Gonna give it a touch more and try again tonight.

Here is what i am confused on. I thought the L6 meant it was manufactured in 2006. I have a packing date of 5/11/2007.

    Ov3rclock3r you have a L7 with a packing date of 4/13/2007.

Just curios as to how this could be. I'm thinking the L7 or L6 doesn't necessarily refer to the year it was manufactured.

Should one stay away from this batch? How would you rate its OCability?

too early to tell. I'm still in my first week with it. Considering it's likely to be stable at 3.2ghz (from 2.13ghz) with a little over 1.4v i would hardly say i could tell someone to 'stay away' from it. For what this chip cost me i say i got a hell of a deal.

Gonna let orthos run overnight tonight. I'll post the result before heading out to work in the morning. It looks like voltage is at 1.42v now. Been running orthos for about 15 minutes and max cpu temp is 50C(using a scythe infinity/cpu not lapped).

You and I are in the same boat GripS. Looks like you gave it a little bit more juice--and I'm guessing you'll be stable now.

Your temps are a little higher--I'm running a Thermalright Ultra-120--and the weather hasn't been very warm (for summer) in the last couple of weeks where I live. My temps max at about 46C.

My stepping is L651B--it doesn't look like there's a lot of difference in our chips.

    To jcniest5:
I wouldn't say they are bad overclockers at all. I would actually say they are average to above average. I'm pretty sure I could get 425x8 (super pi was fine at this speed) Orthos stable out of this chip if I want to give it the juice--but I'm happy where I'm at right now. I've seen posts with 6420's that couldn't get 375x8 24/7 stable no matter what voltage they threw at it.

Sure you'll always see posts from users who get crazy clocks--but that sometimes takes a ton of patiences and many RMA's to find that one golden sample.

If you're in the market for a sub $200 chip--the 63-6420's are still an unbelievable value.

    I have one, a L710 from SLA4T.
    At first wouldn't go over 2.8, but now I'm at 3.2 (1.4-ish v), gunning for 3.4.
It loads into windows at 3.4, but not orthos stable yet...
Upping mem voltage got me further, and allowed me to drop Vcore (from 1.45 to 1.4) but this coincided with a new PSU, so maybe that's also part of the reason, although I wouldn't understand how it works exactly...

Take your time with it... and configure your mem by hand.
Changing from LTD 5 to 4 also helped me some (but mainly on the 2 => 4 gig prob).
Oh yeah, and up the NB, but make sure to have adequate cooling on it... I'm at 1.5, with a TR HR-05 on the NB, and a TR HR-05 SLI on the SB in a P180. Doens't do much on the SB, but to hell with it... ;-)

    Other questions, just shoot!

GL with it, and let us know

My E6420 finally made 3.7Ghz Orthos stable. Changing out the block from Apogee to FuZion helps temps as did changing for Thermal Take fans that max at 95 CFM, on a fan controller about 75%.
