With all the encoding, crunching and bloated software to come, I mean ofcourse!

    Must hype myself some more!
Here's a good irrational use for you?
I imagine at some time you've extracted a 700MB avi Xvid rarset?
    How about FOUR seconds!
I swear! I sat here and laughed when I saw the speed.

I keep trying to get across how good these machines are.
I know it sounds like I'm bragging but thats not my purpose.
I really would love to see a lot of you guys working with one of these.
Sheet, I'm 55 and they get me excited. Imagine what they'd do to one of the 20 somethings here.
Poor guy would be walking around with wet shorts every day!

I'll stick with my near silent e6850 XBX2 system, though as soon as I can get my hands on an Intel x38 board I'll be upgrading to Penryn quad core since I can run that passively.
And here I was thinking you were going to offer me a job doing PR work for Intel.
No selling needed with this one. It sells itself.
If I was Intel I'd set up a fleet of 20-30 vans, put a dual 771 at 3000 in each and send them around the country.
The sales would go sky high.

You'd laugh more if you knew that decompression does not use multiple cores. (I'm laughing now ;-)
So you were lucky with the RAR set. Consider this... 700MB x2 = 1400MB in 4 seconds = 250 MB/s - now does that tell you something?
Like you were limited at most by your controller?
The RAR set was set to "Store" for sure, not really compressed.
I'm not trying to bash you, but this has no rationale ;-)
I LIKE DP machines though! Compressing is for sure faster!

    P5E64_Evo/QX9650, 4x X25-E SSD - gimme speed..

Not a clue how you did that, it was probably the non-CPU parts that are loud. The bloody chipset and FBDIMMs get too hot
But even during the summer now (and I don't turn on the A/C because I prefer it that way), I don't need any extra cooling for my dual 35W Xeon system than what TT Kandalf provides (there was no time and no reasonable way to get a better chassis at the time here

Interesting. My point was I'd never seen that size rarset extract that fast and I mean no where near that fast.
I know you and will defer the technical part to your knowledge but can you understand my amazement at seeing that happen in that timeframe?

I use one of those Zalman FB123 92mm mid speed fans and the included bracket($9.00 from newegg) and it keeps the 4x1 gig cool at 350mhz, cool enough to touch the buffer chip.)
I'm on the other end at almost 144w at 3157mhz..
    In a 70F room I can maintain 59-61C at full load 24/7
Let the room temps go to 76F and the cpu's go to 67-69C

Computational power beyond any quad single socket gaming or workstation that exists.
I'm telling you straight, you guys have to work with one of these to appreciate just how much power they really have.
Just a little comparison for you to think on:
Over at HWBOT, the highest score I saw on Sisoftsandra math test app 2 months ago was just over 81,000.That was on a Kentsfield on LN2 at just under 5000mhz.
I decided to run it just for laughs to see what would happen.
I mean a dual clover at everyday 24/7 full load speeds. No OS tweaks, nothing special, stock win2K3 server ent 64 bit.
    The result: 119,000+

Asus really isn't into this as yet.
The best boards seem to be supermicro and tyan so far.
I really wish they were cheaper to build. I'd love to see all you guys with one.
Just incredible machines to work with.

Its useless in the form that if you want such a platform its already there as a workstation. Its a double product, one with a V8 sticker, one without. Else its the same thing.

Absolutely 100% correct. They are just trying to introduce this dual socket workstation setup in a slick case to attract another potential part of the buying public.
What I do think is missed by many people is that this platform loses a lot of the "problems" that previous dual socket xeons had and it's the C2D architecture that does it.]
In previous generations the server boards lacked so much but now they are very close to the high end gaming boards that you can effectively game on this system and you also have that incredible computational power that the single socket can't touch.
Here's an example of some of what I'm trying to say:
In August 2005 I built a 3600/2mb/800 dual xeon system, all the best parts and "state of the art" at that time.
When I ran SP1M on it I got 32s when the gamers were getting 21-22s
With this clover at 3270 I ran 15.562s in SP1M when the gamers are running in the high 11-13S range...Not that far off.
The duals have come a long way in the 22 month timespan between those 2 systems.

I sure can. Frankly, I had the exact same amazement some weeks ago;-) That's how I "know"

I use one of those Zalman FB123 92mm mid speed fans and the included bracket($9.00 from newegg) and it keeps the 4x1 gig cool at 350mhz, cool enough to touch the buffer chip.)
Ye, I have a super quiet 120mm and the chips are not even warm, but still they need some cooling Going off topic, but I'm considering some TT Cyclo or similar coolers

I'm on the other end at almost 144w at 3157mhz.. In a 70F room I can maintain 59-61C at full load 24/7 Let the room temps go to 76F and the cpu's go to 67-69C
Not bad for a quadcore. (50*C on my cores is an alarm bell except for 95*F room temps ;-)
    P5E64_Evo/QX9650, 4x X25-E SSD - gimme speed..

@MM, dude you are realy making my mouth water, talking so dirty about your setup!

I really can't wait to see how hardware parts will develop in the next few months, then if I could get a good deal on parts will build a WC one on my tech station!

Done right, you can be on air at 3000..above 3300 I think water is a must.
Now these are clovers, with 8mb cache, imagine the Harpertowns with 12mb cache and 1600FSB.
JEEZ, I'm starting to sound like a 16 year old fanboy!

    Oh I know

But for performance sake I'm also hoping his "alleged\possible Barcelona scores" prove to be true
