I know not all chipsets can perform the same but I thought the whole point of this board was 500 FSB on the 266 strap. I'm beginning to think the 266 strap @ high FSB's on this board is requiring something that every ram kit can't do. I find it hard to accept that every boards NB can differ this much that some are clock so much better than others. I did however notice that smart guardian reports less drop in voltages in windows on my first board than my second board (compared to what you set in bios).

yeah buddy as a matter fo fact I need more volts for orthos stability to achieve 500x7 than i did on the p5b-d, this si with the two settings on normal and not fast and strapp set to auto... I still neeeded high vtt and high NB volts.

The board is still pretty nice and I am not complaining, I would change ram probably before I changed mobos, because it seems like the p5b-d like my firestix a hell of alot better than this dfi.

I am looking into some reaper 1066 sticks possibly, just now is not a good time for me to dump money into more hardware. As far as droop or what SG and windows report compared to bios set voltages is concerned, the board has MUCH LESS droop then the p5b-d. If I set 1.35 I get 1.33 where my p5b-d would give me 1.3

Does anybody think going to a diff bios may help?

Newegg had 10 more boards come in yesterday. They're down to the last one & raised the price to $149.99. I contacted them and changed my rma from replace to refund. I'm hoping my ocz's have D9GKX's when they get here. If that doesn't help me get past 505FSB then there's no reason to invest in another hit or miss board. Besides, I'm very happy with mine anyway. I'm just greedy

I grabbed one of those (at 139.99). =P

Going with 2x1GB Ballistix PC6400, C2D 6420 L651B, and an Ultra-120 as a cheap upgrade from my sig workstation. I'm hoping to hit 3.4--I will report in this thread in the coming weeks (yes, weeks--I'm damn well going to get it tweaked and stable stock before the OC--just the way I work).

Quick question--does this board have memtest in the BIOS like the DFI LanParty nf4 series?

No, it's an Infinity series board. No CMOS Reloaded, no memtest, no fancy bundle. Just 500FSB stock right out the box (in most cases) for under $150. Still a great bargain board IMO.

well I seem to have got 500x7 orthos stable, thing is I cannot have those 2 settings to fast or use the 266 strapp setting.

I went ahead and flashed to the rebel haven version of the 4-24 bios also and seems to have helped.

using all the settings mentioned and 1.28 VTT and 1.45 NB volts all else stock, +.100 on the cpu and ram at 2.1.

Highest strap available on this board is 266. So your saying in order to run your memory @ DDR2-1000 you have to set the memory settings to auto or normal. Fast doesn't work. Fast if I understand it correctly sets some tight internal latency's etc., which makes the board perform alot better. This makes me more inclined to believe this board is memory picky.

Rattle, do you have any other memory other than those firesticks you can try out? Well at least you got 500FSB stable. I'm been playing around with 500FSB & Pi with some old fatbody's 4-3-2-4. Trying to see how tight I can get everything. Gonna have to swap to the 6600 for the 4mb cache though.

Unhiding the straps will not help you overclock better, I did the same with all the bios files for the Infinity and only the defaults you see on an unmodified bios actually work.

If you want to see 1333 strap change the BSEL on the cpu and the board will boot 1333 and the mermory defaults will change.

I have TRAS down to 1,and quite a few other unhides all working but this does not effect how the bios makes the board overclock unless a ram table or other chipset code has been changed.

Well maybe its just luck and more tweaking on my part.
I dont have any other sticks aside from some of those cheapo kingston 667's

Also i was under the impression that others could run at 266 with both settings at fast... I cannot.

Yeah I ran mine @ Fast. All my ram are G. Skill, Crucial, & Corsair though. I may try to get a ram compatability thread going. Where people can report in what FSB's they have with this board, ram used, & bios settings.

I have been following this thread with some interest for a while now. At first it was because I too was having great issue getting my motherboard to break the 500 FSB wall. On the 7 multi I could just touch on 503/4 MHz and do a run of super PI before every thing would freeze up on me.

All that testing and tweaking was done using either Clock Gen or Set FSB utilities. My best ever 1:1 on the 8 times multiplier was 484. And I was reasonable happy with that. Except that I had been unable to achieve what I had set as my target and justification for buying another motherboard, namely getting below 13 secs (on air) for 1 Mil Super PI.

In the end I tossed all the utilities out of the toy box and went back to only setting bios tweaks in the bios. The results were startling - I was easily able to get above 500 using the 8 times multipliers and a 1:1 ratio. So I just kept going and going till I could not run super PI no more.

    http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=201409

I have included a memset image purely to show the timings - all timings were set in the bios manually.

    CPU 1.6
    NB 1.45
    Dram 2.4
    vtt 1.275
    all others at stock

I was able to run super PI 32 mil as a ghetto suitability test but failed Otho's within an hour and a half. Not to stressed about that as I would not want this as my 24/7 setup.

I have never been able to get my motherboard to boot up with the two "Fast" settings but if all they do is tighten up the timings then I am (trying to) do that myself in the bios anyway. As to the different modes available on the dramm set up page - I have tried them all and lack any information that suggests a particular setting works and another does not - they all booted up for me at this FSB and with the 8 time multipliers...so it is a personal thing I guess.

The point I am trying to make with this post is keep trying - if one set of timings or a particular tweaking tool does not work for you then change it. I spent weeks of frustration not making any real or measurable progress and truly wanted to just ditch this motherboard and cut my losses. But I am pleased I tried just once more. And it is thanks to Nemesis that I did because his dogged determination here on this thread kept me going.

Should I replace the NB heatsink with TR HR-05? I'll have my board shipped tomorow (or something) and I want to be prepared for overclocking.

    Thank you.

I've made the switch myself, but stock heatsink is adequate, especially if you drop a fan on top.

if you have it, replace it if you want. if you want to buy one, i suggest not because the stock heatsink is fine.

What cpu & cooling do u have? My board ran perfectly stable 500 X 7 @ stock 1.25v & NB cooling. If your board will do the same then no. Even if it takes a bit more, I see no reason to change the nb cooler unless you gonna run 1.4 or more volts for sustained periods of time or in a case thats not well ventilated.

Yes, excellent results. I'm gonna have to switch to a 6600 once I get new water setup. Maybe I can get close to those times.

decided to keep trying 500fsb again tonight. just couldn't get it going. So I pulled a stick of ram and stuck the other in a different slot. Now at 500fsb f/f with one stick. However, performance is pretty poor with single channel f/f. Gave vnb and vtt a bump to get it going. I'm guessing it just needed the vnb bump. Also got a fan blowing on the hr05 nb heatsink now. Seeing nb temps of 22-23'c instead of 30's-40's now

I don't have it yet, but I plan to buy one next week, along with one HR-03 for video-card. I'm a silent freak. Nexus and Noctua is loud.

For now I have QuadGT, but this thing is getting me bald (and I have long hair ). I don't use a case.

Thanks for your replies, I'll post some results as soon as I have them.

what psu for maximum oc you guys can really recommend ?

with enermax liberty 500w the boards was just shutting down all the time. mostly right after i stopped prime95.

now im testing with bequiet darkpower 600w. during 1h+ in-place large fft's (7x500) the board just reboots. i really smell another psu incompatibility here

try setting bootup fsb to 410. if that doesn't work, try a pcie of 103. then try 1.6vsb. then try setting the timings that don't have an auto from 8665 to 8666. usually, if my fsb isn't set too high, setting bootup to 410 cures it. otherwise, I look into the other options.
