I know that the middle PEG slot is intended for SLI graphics so perhaps the Southbridge gets unhappy whenever there is something other than a graphics card in that slot.

Probably dead on. It's doubtful the second slot was ever intended for anything other then graphics acceleration.

afaik that slot mentioned is a bootable storage device slot, on most DFI boards this is the case..
