    The Road to 3.5GHz on air

    Update(June 16):
    Took out heatsink on both my GPU and my CPU, cleaned everything with 70% isopropyl and applied new thermal paste.
    Lowered my temps about 2c on my CPU idle and 4c on my GPU idle.

    Update(June 12):
    Finally broke the 3.1GHz line while running at ~29c with stock volts :]
    can't wait for my DFI Expert DR to come in! :]

    UPDATE(June 11):
    I won a DFI Expert SLI-DR for $56 + shipping.

    I have seen this done only once before (but it was water cooled), so I wanted to give it a shot.

    I have an AMD 3800+ X2 Toledo Core with E6 stepping.
    1Gig DDR400 (512 PQI 2.5-3-3-7 | 512 Geil 2.5-3-3-8)
    Asus A8V-XE mobo

    Current highest reached: 3075MHz
    Current highest stable (superpi and wprime): 3065MHz

    Getting to 3.0GHz from 2Ghz was a breeze, the only annoying thing is that the Asus A8V-XE has an overclock stop after 2.7GHz, so I have to do the rest in ClockGen.
    After I get to about 3059 or 3065 it won't go up anymore even though clockgen says it should. Sometimes it might crawl up to the next setting but it would go back down or only do it while the CPU is in usage. This makes no sense as I do not have any "Cool'n'Quite" things installed and all those options are disabled in my BIOS.

    Anyways here are some screenshots.

    Best SuperPi (Stock is ~45s)

    PinMod to 1.6v

    Any help would be awesome!

    My CPU HS is

    OK so after much trial and error I found out that my mobo has a max FSB of ONLY 306.. WTF?

    So after I return from my trip I will be ordering a new K8N from ASUS (nForce chipset).
    At that point I will shoot for 3.4 and hope it doesn't get too hot with the vmod at 1.6v.

    If it does I will then get a new HS and probably new ram.

    The road to 3.5 Ghz should have a pitstop with about 8-25 hours of prime at 3 Ghz first.. how are you going for more when all it's stable to do now is superpi? I'm stable for over 20 minutes of 4 Ghz of superpi on my e6400, but it isn't useful for anything else.

    I second the DFI Ultra-D as a new board.

    Have you thought about Read Preamble and Max Async Latency?

    Try this, set RP to 7 and MAL to 9. Usually those are blocking high HTT so you need to loosen them.

    Anyway where are you pulling this 3.5GHz number from? Certainly not this dimension, lol.

    I've just ordered a X2 4000+ Because I can't get my X2 3800+ @ 2.7GHz Stable.
    I thought a better cooler would help, I received my Zalman CNPS9500 and 2,66GHz stable is all I still get. About the same as with the AMD stock cooler.
    But the temps are much better compared with the stock cooler. 45 degree C. under load, and 38 idle. That's pretty nice compared with up to 70 degree with AMD's stock cooler.

    check the benchmark world records and HWBot.org
    it's been done before, and I just wanted to get 1st/2nd at HWbot. I was at 5th but im not longer on the top list as more people put their entries in.

    I'll try those when I get home..

    Yeah, I don't think you'll get 3.5 either. Biohead has one of the best chips I've seen (3.1 at 1.4v on air I think) and he can only get 3.3GHz on phase. He might be able to squeak a 3.5GHz SS on air

    I had a worse 165 (3.1@1.525) and I got a 3.4GHz SS on water. But you won't be able to run any benchmarks there.

    Core i7 920 D0 B-batch (4.1) (Kinda Stable?) | DFI X58 T3eH8 (Fed up with its' issues, may get a new board soon) | Patriot 1600 (9-9-9-24) (for now) | XFX HD 4890 (971/1065) (for now) |

    Anyone else's opinions would be fantastic :]

    3500 aint happening on air unless you have aircon hanging over your rig and you have a B7 IMC

    No harm in pushing an OC tho, so keep going!

    On the DFI board, HT voltage to 1.4V helped me a lot

    can I say I love you?
    I hope it's still for sale when I get back though.

    Anyways
    I am about 90% sure I can make 3.4GHz on air, and then about 60% sure I can make 3.5GHz.
    I also have a pin mod for 1.55v which goes to 1.6 usually.
    so
    with 1.6v, some decent ram and the ultra-d board I should be able to make it, when I get home from vacation I will have some nice air cooling going on.

    Maybe with your window open on a -10C night. You are already at ~1.45v for 3.04GHz.. 1.55 will bring you to about 3.14, 1.6v to 3.19 at best. I'll eat my shoe if you get to 3.5 semi-stable :p

    sorry
    hmm.

    i was running 3.04 at 1.45 stable (burn in for 8 hours and super pi and wprime and CS:S for like 9023049238 hours and halo and a ton of other things) I only turned it off once in like 2 days.
