Just lapped my cpu and Tuniq Tower. I am very happy with the results. I'll report my temp difference once the AS5 has settled. Looks like a 4-5C drop in temps before the settle already.

Yup...I used the Arctic clean kit afterwards. No worries.

well i just got my tuniq a couple of days ago. just bought a brand new 6600, real good chip also. I was idle at 29c full load was under 55c at 3.5 ghz with 1.4v

bad idea..i must have did something wrong..but now at these same clocks under orthos it hits 76c !

the lap job looked good, and it was flat..but kinda of messed up, guess i shouldnt be allowed to use sandpaper!

ohwell not that big of a deal. plan on getting a penyrn or a q6600 once they go down to 270

Here is one site that has the parts and instructions. I'm sure there are others, but this worked well for me. I just wish I'd had another piece of corse paper for the initial grinding.

I used my glass dinner table since the water wont hurt it, then put newspaper on top of it to absorb the excess water and then the glass that came with the kit (or the float glass mentioned above).

But the absolute most important thing is patience. If you start to get tired or frustrated, get up and walk away for a while. And when you get to the last couple sheets of micro-fine sandpaper, use enough water (a water bottle works great) to keep the copper you grind away off of the sandpaper or the copper shavings will scratch the final finish. I used the premium lapping kit and if I had it all to do over again, I'd have ordered the corse kit as well. I had to use every square inch of the 400, 600 and 800 sheets to grind away most of the significant high spots. The rest is in the FAQ. Oh, on the last 2 sheets, use a light touch. The piece you're lapping should not really grind on these, just glide across the water, then rinse the debris off the sandpaper, often, rotate, glide a little more and so on.

When you're done, if you look straight on it does not reflect very well, but if you put it on an angle, you should be able to read fine print in the reflection. The outside edges are not as important technically, since they hang over the side of the CPU, but for most people, it's just a matter of personal pride

I lapped a Tuniq Tower120 this week too. Did you have any significant raised or low spots? I sure did. It took me 3 1/2 hours to do mine and there was still a barely visible spot that was not fully polished. It's off to the side where it will not contact the CPU, but mine was quite "lumpy" for lack of a better word.

Here's my lapped Extreme and E6600. Took so damn long, I don't think it's worth it just for the few degrees haha. Got too damn tired towards the end and gave up. Couldn't be bothered to finish sanding out all the silver on the CPU so I left it like that. I used 400 grit then 600 grit and then 1200 grit.

I don't care about the shine cause no one is gonna see it.

I idle at 32/31 degrees in CoreTemp. It should drop more once the paste settles in. Time to start OCing

There is a reason that people ALWAYS should start with a 200 grit. If you start with a 400 grit it takes an hour just to get the plating off the copper. If you start with a 200 grit it only takes like 10 minutes.

That's what I did. I used 200, 400, 800, then went to 1000 and 2000 for the finish.

You can remove the screws while you lap it. I had the same problem and covered the screws with a folded up and cut down paper towel to protect my fingers and near the end I just took out the screws. Now I need to get another heatsink base for under the mobo though, I'm RMAing the CPU and mobo. The glue on that foam padding is pretty serious stuff and will not come off easy. I had to pry it off with my fingers and I seriously thought that the board would crack before the board released from the heatsink footing. I just hope Newegg.com will accept the RMA mobo with the foam on the bottom and not reject it...the ASUS P5B Deluxe/Wifi-ap is $192. Good thing I did not lap the CPU yet!

Well, Tuniq's customer service rocked! I e-mailed Tuniq asking about a replacement foot for under the motherboard because I had to RMA my mobo...they asked who I bought it from and when, so I told them and included my order number. It looks like I'm being sent another base free of charge. WOOT for Tuniq!!!

Well, the AS5 is starting to settle a little bit now. My idle temps have gone from the low 40 - 41C to 32C and I figure she may even go down further. Load is at 49 - 50C so nearly a 10C drop on both idle and load.

Taffer, I snapped two of my screws putting my Tuniq back on and had to make due with the two for the K8 install that I barely got on using two motherboard stand screws. I don't want to remove my heatsink with these great temps but I'll need to eventually!

Do you have an email of someone you spoke to that I can contact at Tuniq for replacements?

To be honest, I'm tired and may not understand the question...but you may want to twist the heat sink on the CPU a little. Not much, maybe 1-2 degrees each way, three or four times. You may have a small air pocket that you can displace, or the grease type material may not have spread all the way across or set up in it's end state yet. You have to let your grease get to max temp for a little while (or a while if you're in a game or other task ), and when you are done, let the computer idle down to low temps and then shut down and let the CPU totally cool. After you do this several times your temps should drop some more. These are just some generic tips, and if you've done them, just ignore my rambling.

I was worried (I still am a little) about my thumbscrews but I put mine in 2-3 times pretty tight and no problems yet, and I have a pretty strong grip. I did this when the mobo was out of the case so maybe that helped. I don't know if you need the thermal grease or not, but if you don't have Artic Silver or similar, they would probably ship you a little tube of grease. I finally found out which was bad between my mobo and CPU. I was at work today and a new computer came in with a C2D. I stole my box back from the mailroom and swapped out the CPU with mine and it fired up perfectly. My CPU on my RMA mobo would not POST or even light any of the LEDs on the keyboard. Newegg was going to RMA both without a second guess, but I'm tech type, I had to know what was wrong.

PS - Lapping the cpu was the best thing I did. The Tuniq was also horrible and now my idle/load temps are dropping big time. First time I've had to lap and it was well worth it. I must admit that wet sanding the cpu was nerve racking.

Once my computer is up and running a few weeks stable with some OC voltages, I'll take the risk and pull the CPU and lap it as well. I'm sure it will make a large difference with both lapped smooth. It's nerve racking, and I've not even done it yet. This is my first build that is 100% from the ground up inlcuding the CPU/RAM voltages, FSB and so on. It's going to be an experience and hopefully I wont toast anything on the way.
