crucial value ddr2-667 - budget ram!

so, i picked up a kit of 2x1gb for $120 a week ago. well.. it ended up being single rank, 8 micron D9HNL chips per stick. i was hoping for some GMH, but i guess i wasn't that lucky. i think it's fairly safe to say that most of those sticks will come with these chips, as i've seen someone else with them too, but samsung or elpida is a possibility, but i think somewhat unlikely.

anyway, i like overclocking, not talking. here goes

    pretty non-descript value ram.

and... the results. i had a lot of fun with this. it was somewhat finicky as far as timings and drive strengths went... but voltage does next to nothing!

starting off, i managed to pull this off:

but then i found out that 3d stability was lower than 32M stability... so i started using 3dmark as well as 32m to check stability, and ended up a bit lower

then after much tweaking and fiddling, i arrived here:

after concluding that i figured out what the D9HNL likes, i went ahead and started checking how it scales with voltage at several different timing sets. the mhz shown is the maximum speed that would complete 32M and 3dmark05

compare that scaling chart with some of my D9GMH based stuff: (a 2x512mb ddr2-800 teamgroup kit)

and understand why i am dissapointed with how poorly it responds to voltage. this doesn't bode well for micron in the 2x2gb market.
Got a fan over those memory sticks? No? Well get to it before you kill them

2.1v and almost 500mhz? Not bad for value RAM! Not bad at all.

thanks but, the fact that i went up to 2.4v and it DECREASED in speed upset me

What partnumber is this ? perhaps CT2KIT12864AA667 ?

120$ for 2 gigs , it's a steal, no matter how good it scales with voltage.

I've read in another thread that this stuff will not go over 500mhz no matter how high the voltage. Crucial have been putting these chips in the UK too.
I got some D9HNH which scales better with voltage, but I have not had the chance to test yet. But I understand that people are still getting D9GMH in Norway and Sweden with their Value Ram, also in Germany I think.

I spoke to someone in China the other day and was told that D9GMH is in very short supply over there.

It looks like the D9GMH stuff is sold out in Germany aswell, but the D9HNL 2Gb kit is only 92euro. Thats a great price. If you use that ram in value gaming rigs or crunchers, that dont have to run at insane speeds, there is no better bang for the buck memory.
Weird how it scales with voltage...
Maybe those are 70nm or something?

I wanna say 68nm, but I'm not positive. I do know that the process size is smaller than the B6 stuff (GMH/GKX)

    Jaco, it's these:

its most likely 70nm if not even still 80nm. I really doubt the lithography is smaller than that since 65nm and smaller need more complex production equipement

It would seem you cannot find these anymore, as they are using Samsung chips in the latest batches. Probably best place to find it is a local store that may not sell out so fast and still has the D9s on the shelf. Nice results for sub $120 kit.

This is what I've arrived in my mail two days ago

.... and yes, it's a pair of 512MBs .... no 1GBs since I don't really need them (just using my pc for normal works and very little gaming)

I am yet to test them coz still playing around with my TeamXtreem. Apparently one of the stick was very good (581mhz 5-5-5-5 @ 1.9v, cpu limited), but the other one was crappy (484mhz 5-5-5-5 @ 1.9v )... and both sticks runs 500mhz 4-4-4-5 @ 2.2v.

Gonna test my Crucials by today

    nice

it's a good thing they can't use D9HNL for 512mb sticks... i would like to see them make a 256mbit density revD die though (double rank 512mb sticks), that would kick some SERIOUS ass

D9HNH aren't very nice clockable. I have heard from some people that they do not scale with higher voltage. Results around 375Mhz, not much more

It's funny that you don't have a motherboard right now and I don't have a CPU.
I don't think they are good overclockers.

A lot of Norwegians have bought these sticks, and almost everyone got D9GMH. Seen people running 4gigs@1200MHz 5-5-5-15 2,2/3V prime and memtest stable. Had a pair myself, didn't push them, but managed 1000mhz 5-5-5-15 easy.

Now they retail for 900kr, which directly converted is about 150$, but in real monetary value is more like 80-90$. THIS IS TWO GIGS OF D9GMH I'M TALKING ABOUT

I read somewhere that a few people oc these things upto 450Mhz@ 1.87v, and someone else oc to 533Mhz@2.2v. 5.5.5.12 i think. I don't think they oc as high as D9GMH but not too bad for value ram.
If these sticks fail to reach a good FSB then i will just sell on ebay and buy from Singapore, I have 4x1mb of D9GMH waiting for me for a really good price.

I have just sold my LanpartyUT 3200CFX/DR, Opteron 146 and DDR.
I have just got hold of a 'B' step E6600. So i am just waiting for a DFI Infinity P965-S (waiting forever). I only buy DFI, hence my name "DFI pit bull", the DFI boards atm really suck.
