e4300 IHS Removed!

I am pretty sure the E6600 is soldered. It is either all L stepping Allendale CPUs or just the E4300 that has grease AFAIK.

its definately not only all e4300s, thats way too complicated for intel.
either all cpus get it or none. allendale might be possible, but i think the bigest probability is that intel uses different pack stations in different locations and some use this thermal grease while others use the thermal bond material...

We gotta' find a way to ID this. For example, on AMD's whos heatspreaders say Copyright 2005 AMD, they have soldered IHS'. If they say Copyright 2001 AMD, they don't.

Removing IHS is not that hard really. It just takes a lot of time and patience.

Just give me 2 minutes ... I do 3 CPU's :P

just curious how easy would it be to crush the core with out the IHS installed i really want to do this and use my phase unit on it

probably pretty easy to crush because the bare die is not made to withstand pressure because it has the IHS. I think i read something where the Athlon XPs had some type of ceramic layer on top of the die to prevent chipping since it was exposed. Now that theres an IHS, thats not longer used and chipping is easier.

If you can't afford another CPU, dont remove the IHS.

I'm not sure how intel dies compare to AMD dies as far as durability, but on my naked opty I had my heatsink bolted down so darn tight I couldn't turn the screws anymore. Not even so much as a chipped corner on the die. When the screws are tightened down that far there is a ton of pressure on that die.

Think of the screws like this.

3 . . 4

Tighten screw 1 some, then 4, then 2, then 3, and repeat until tight. That puts even pressure on the die which will prevent crushing the corners. Usually chipping the die is caused by uneven pressure while mounting.

I've done the IHS removal on an E4300. That was easy, but now the heatsink doesn't reach the core! The s775 metal top is above the core height... Also I'm not sure that the cpu is tight against the socket contacts, as the mechanism pushes the IHS down, and without IHS, it may be loose... I'm using Asus P5N-E SLI and Ninja Rev.B.

I'm thinking of doing the following: get a cooler that has screws as retention (as opposed to the s775 default retention clips), and one of two things: or find a cooler that has a small base (enough to skip the s775 metal mount) and/or remove the s775 top metal mount (and the cooler is used to secure the cpu).

Any sugestions???

if you're referring to the motherboard's retention bracket on the s775 socket, then yes, it can be removed.

I don't know anybody who have removed the IHS and maintained his cpu alive.

There are many of us AMD fans who removed opty tops all day long, never had a chip die!

For some reason I was yet to see someone remove an Intel IHS for some reason...LoL

I removed the retention bracket and adapted an Artic Cooling 7 (removed the plastic pins and bolted the thing to the motherboard).

I started it, but it may not be doing good contact to the core. I ran Orthos (small fft's), Asus Probe and Coretemp 0.95, at 3ghz, 1.325vcore.

After 4 minutes, Asus Probe was giving 49ºC and Coretemp 119ºC??? Nothing crashed... Removing the core may confuse some sensors... Anyone had the same problem?

what motherboard is that? what does asusprobe report if you turn on peci or turn it off. it doesn't matter either way though, those coretemps are indeed alarming. hmm.. tried reapplications? did you make a shim around the cpu so that the heatsink goes on even?

It was a problem of Coretemp 0.95, as version 0.94 reported much lower temps. Also vcore was at 1.45v (asus default).

My next move is to disassemble the Ninja's retention clips and to use that one, as the Freezer 7 Pro is too noisy and just won't cut it.

I'm still struggling to get 3ghz stable at the lowest vcore, but i'm already at 1.36v and it's still rebooting. This board (P5N-E SLI) may not be the best for these cpu's.

edit: as for the shim, i made one with 1mm tape, just to protect the core.

Very cool! I would try it on my E6300 if I thought there was any chance I could just slice around the edge w/ a exacto knife and pry off the IHS. Especially if I can expect 8-10C temp improvement!
