Quad core temps

What are good temps for a QX6700?
I just tossed my new CPU into the loop yesterday and I am at
idle/load
Core0: 59/67
Core1: 54/64
Core2: 54/63
Core3: 54/64

I have my CPU overclocked to 3.55 @ 1.45 vcore...
does this sound ok? I'm used to running my C2D at idle/load temps of 37/45 so these seem a bit high to me.

What do you guys think?

pretty normal for a quad core. My temps are about the same at 3.6Ghz (my 24/7 settings) although my idle temps are a bit lower than yours. But that is nothing to worry about.

Intel's max recommended thermal on this chip is 65C
anything over that and you are possibly shortening the life of the chip

I have heard this 65 degree temp before but ignored it thinking it is in error. If it is true, then Intel's stock cooler doesnt meet the spec. At stock speeds with the stock cooler running Boinc you will exceed 65 degrees by a wide margin. What is the source for this 65 degree recomendation from Intel. I have read the thermal specs etc but can not find any statement that says 65 degrees max.

TJunction is 100C..anyway I've QX6700 @ 1.38v and I'm loading 70C and idle 50C. Alphacool Nexxxos XP Light, Laing DDC1, BIP2 + 40CFM fans. I suppose I could do alot better with Apogee GT/GTX or D-Tek Fuzion.

I 100% agree... I have heard the 65 degree myth also, maybe its true? We need to see actual evidence... and the thermal specs I read said nothing of the sort...

I've actually dropped my temps by working on my OC... I'm now at 3.5 w/ 1.38 vcore and my temps are:
idle/load
Core0: 46/57
Core1: 44/56
Core2: 43/55
Core3: 44/56

That's looking quite good now. Right now, i'm running @ 3.0 with 1.4v, so my temps are about the same as yours, but they vary so much.

Even the first lot posted were good.

IIRC there was a guy on these forums, in some kind of modding post I think it was, I know that his temps were ALOT higher than yours, pretty certain he was hitting 70/80c, but didn't have any problems, I think this was on the stock Intel cooler, which he got changed because of the temps.

It is true! Tcase is 65C max.

Now, the Tcase temperature is typically 10-15C lower than the values given by the thermal sensors on the die themselves. So If you are using coretemp, then each core can go to 75-80C and you are in spec.
It is a bit confusing when you read the intel documents because they only talk about Tcase Max which is 65C. They also say that the THERMTRIP signal (shutdown signal) gets asserted at 20C above Tcase (i.e 85C as determined on the case) so you are really seeing a temperature of 100-105C in Coretemp when the system shuts down.

I am currently hitting about 72C using coretemp running 4 instances of prime95 and idling at 51C. I am using a Tuniq Tower, and it took three tries for me to get these temperatures!
With the stock cooler at stock 2.66 GHz, I hit 71C as well!

I am currently running 340 FSB x10 (3.4GHz at 1.34V) on an evga 680 rev A board.

I have a question for all of you water coolers. Is a dual 120mm fan rad adequate to cool a QX6700 to high overclocks?
I would only be cooling the cpu not anything else.

Yes I beleive so. A PA120.3 can handle a QX6700 and SLI 8800's... so a PA120.2 could take a QX6700 by itself.

Well i got a single 120mm rad from my last setup with a pentium D, it uses crappy 1/4" hose and a small res. I have my QX at 3.0 ghz and its folding using the smp client, which means 100% usage on all cores non stop, my temps after about an hr are around 60-62C

I think a dual 120mm with 1/2" hoses and a larger res would do fine

sounds great, let us know how it turns out Ian, always enjoy your experience. I was just pricing out a new system C2D today with a E6700, and I'm concerned about getting temps down. So I've been watchng your posts.

AMD's coming out with some newer AM2 procs soon, so might hold off a while and see if AMD catches back up and I can build more upon the rig I have up.

Unfortunately I'm not home right now. I'm vacationing till midweek and when I return, I have to get down to ordering my case. Nothing's going to happen till I have a case that can hold all my stuff... and its growing, as you can imagine.

I am not aiming for the most number of loops. As you can see, the strategy is radiators and pumps.

My son has had an AM2 system since the fall. It was my system till the Core 2s were released. For an AM2, the system runs very fast (3.3 Ghz) but it does run a bit hot because the water cooling is not ultra high end (Storm Rev2, D5, PA120.3)

I am aiming for at least 1 GHz OC on the kentsfield. I hope to keep temps down below 65°C. On a single GTX240... I may be pushing it.

Much to my chagrin, I determined what the actual shutoff temperature is on a QX6700 last night!!!!! (QX6700 @ 3.4GHz, 1.4V Tuniq tower, 49C idle)

I was running 4 instances of prime95 and over the course of a few hours I saw temperatures around 73C using Coretemp.
Well this morning I can down and the computer was off. Check out this log of the last while in Coretemp

At this point the computer shut off.

Look at the big jump from 100C to 127C! All of a sudden. It implies something is breaking down..the arctic silver? the interface? The logging is at every 9 seconds.

Well now we all know for sure that the THERMPROT signal that is supposed to be tripped at Tcase + 20C is at 127C as determined by Coretemp!!!

What I am curious about though is why the big jump at the end??????

I wouldn't put that poor Kentsfield through many more of those arbitrary tests. I tried the four core TAT beta distributed inside Intel and even on water, the cores were in the mid 70s.

What do you guys think about me adding a PA120.1 to my loop? do you think that would help my temps at all?

I know you guys are telling me that my temps are fine, but I'd really like to be able to overclock a bit more... with my current setup, as soon as I get it up to 3.6, my temps jump 10-15 degrees...

do you think the additional rad would help that?
