Motherboards in general aren't very well thought out solutions for SLI/Crossfire. Some people need those other slots.

The only way to remedy it would be to space the slots out further without increasing the number of expansion slots. For example, start production on EATX variants of common high end motherboards, then you'd have more breathing room. Or maybe just go to MATX, 14"x16" or whatever.

I don't think that if the bottom cooler was mounted the other way, that it would hit the bottom of the case. You'd also have one available PCI slot right above the bottom graphics card, I think. What I do know is that you'd need to have a case with excellent airflow and a side mounted fan. Antec 900 comes to mind.

It'd be nice, but realistically I don't see it happening. EATX or larger variants would mean basically a complete overhaul of the PCB/traces/VRM locations and so forth. Asus, abit, DFI, Foxconn, etc. are likely too cautious to go through with it just to space out expansion slots a bit. It'd mean putting a good deal of capital up for an unknown return. I'm sure enthusiasts would love it as ATX boards are getting very cramped, but you know most companies would rather give the illusion of catering to the enthusiast rather than actually doing it. The trend seems to be cramming more PCI-E slots onto the standard ATX 12"x9.6" PCB and that leads to a complete inability to use anything beyond single-wide graphics cooling solutions AND utilize your other assorted PCI(-E) cards in the instance of double or triple wide cooling solutions.

Aforementioned multiple-slot cooling solutions are also partly to blame, but there aren't many other solutions to increasingly hotter GPUs (for stock, that is) besides growing the size of the HSF itself. Obviously watercooling alleviates these concerns in SLI/CF, but watercooled video cards will never be mainstream (aside from the anomalous BFG 8800GTX waterblock editions).

I've got it sitting @ home waiting for me, but now I'm not so sure. The only reason I got the original HR-03 was because of the noise from the X1900XT's fan/shroud. The stock NV cooler's plenty quiet and w/ an Antec Blower, the load's around 76C in a 25C room temp. Anyone else have memory oc issues?

Quick question, will I be able to mount a 12cm fan on one of these? Can they be mounted so that they don't go over the back of the gfx card but sit directly infront of it? (like the zalman VF900)

EDIT: Nevermind just read the thread right through, tnx hotrodtheman for the review and picks, helps out a lot.

I have yet to hear of one shipped with the HS for the GTS. Thermalright's website still only lists it for the GTX. Waiting... waiting...

it's weird.... the gtx and gts cant have a different hsi chip? surely?

also, ive contacted thermalright and thecoolingshop.com and they both say the hr-3 plus is compatable with both and didnt seem to know what i was talking about in regards to the gtx and gts difference

I e-mailed Thermalright last week and they said that once the HSI heatsinks do arrive, anyone who already bought one can just e-mail them a copy of their invoice and they'll send the heatsink directly to you.

BTW, Newegg finally started selling the HR-03 Plus. At least they know enough to add the notice that the GTS requires the different HSI heatsink:

BTW, if I choose to get an HR-03 Plus and use a 120mm fan on it, will I be able to attach the fan to my 8800 GTS and control the fan speed through Control Panel or RivaTuner? I'm guessing not but I figured I'd ask.

You can only control the fan if you find a way to connect your 120mm fan to the fan header on the graphics card PCB.

    Dear Hank,

Regarding the HR-03 PLUS on 8800 GTS cards (not GTX) I saw an email you sent to 'Anthony' on a forum:
From: Hank Peng (Thermalright, USA) [mailto:hpeng@thermalright.com]
    Sent: 06 March 2007 09:40
    To: Anthony
    Subject: RE: support

    Sorry Anthony,

I should’ve added that if you’re a GTX owner you should be fine.
Otherwise a free HSI heatsink will be provided given that the heatsink was purchased from a legitimate reseller.

    Thank you.
    Best Regards,
    Hank Peng

I noticed the HR-03 PLUS was now for sale on NewEgg.com. I contacted their customer support and they could not confirm that a free HSI Heatsink would be included for 8800 GTS owners. So either they are not a legitimate reseller or they didn't get the memo. Could you talk to them please?

I would like to order this from NewEgg for my 8800 GTS but I can't be sure I'm going to get a proper heatsink for the HSI.

    Thanks,

Well I just placed the noose around my neck and ordered the EVGA 8800GTX KO w/ HR-03 Plus cooler & SilverStone RL-FM91 92mm case fan & Swiftech RAM/Mosfet sinks. The only question left in my mind, other than how am I going to explain this to my wife, is which way to mount this thingy.

I only have an X-Fi card right now and don't plan on SLI so I think I will mount it the way a previous poster mounted his that way the fan will be blowing towards the RAM and Mosfets. I should get it on Friday so until then

Is there any advantage using the Swiftech RAMsinks etc over those provided with the HR-03?

I don't know which RAM sinks are provided with the cooler, nothing was specified over at NewEgg, but they are probably not pure copper.

    lol...yeah

Usually I can slip things past her because she's away at school when UPS/FedEx delivers but she's home for spring break this week and I am too impatient, as usual, to wait another week.

I'm sure I'll get the and the threat of an if I do it again, hahaha.

Thermalright now says on their website that the HSI heatsink for the 8800 GTS won't be available until the end of March, changed from mid-March.

Nice temps TouGe. Which way do you have the HR-03 mounted, on top of the PCB or below the Core and Memory? And which way is the fan blowing?
