    C1E = changes multiplier

    EIST = changes voltage

PS - C1E drops the multiplier to 6 even if you have it disabled. aka "the C1E bios bug"

so is it either 6 OR 9 ?? ie: slow OR fast? no multi of 7 or 8? (for an e6600).
when does it "know" that it can slow down, or need to speed up?

if im playing a game, and pause for a minute to go pee, will it drop down to 6? hopefully it will go right back up to 9?

so is there a 'bug' with EIST? do voltages drop?

when your cpu cycles are not being used, the mult drops down to 6x. so if you're just sitting in front of your computer browsing IE or firefox, your computer will be running 6 x FSBset.

now if you turn on some program that stresses the cpu such as dvd encoding or running a distributing application like f@h then your cpu will go to 9 x FSBset.

it's a power saving function ( 6 x FSBset consumes less power than 9x FSBset).

As for the voltage dropping... I haven't seen the voltage change.

Actually, they BOTH have the capability to change the multiplier AND the voltage. The difference between the 2 is that EIST allows the OS to make the changes (either automatically from power profiles or under user control) while C1E is triggered automatically by the processor going into a halt state (I.E. no work).

So, EIST by itself does absolutely nothing. C1E is what's causing the multiplier to move around based on demand. BTW, I think C1E only messes with the voltage if the voltage is set at default in BIOS. At least that's what I'm observing.

Personally, I LIKE C1E once I'm stable. Why run the cpu full during idle periods? It's during tuning that it becomes a pain.

    So...
No bug with EIST. It's probably never even being invoked.
Bug with BIOS correctly setting C1E on initialization.
You can manually control C1E from within Windows with RmClock, Everest and others.

If you're concerned about C1E, just play with it and see how your system reacts for the kind of load you put on it.

    thanks for the clarification.
so do you have EIST shut off in bios now? and just running C1E? or do you have both turned on?

im still a little confused on the two.. got some more reading up to do, i guess.

is there any relation of this to setting my computer in "hibernate" "sleep" or "quick resume state" ??

I have EIST off on all 3 machines. It's not doing anything anyway but I have it off just on case.

C1E is enabled on my 2 production machines and disabled on my test machine. Obviously because if the bug, I have to also disable it from Rmclock to get it to really disable.

No relation between the power states (hibernate, sleep, etc) and the power saving features.

On my 2 stable machines, I have both EIST and C1E on. EIST isn't doing anything however.

On my test machine, I have both off.

Thanks gtj for the links. I'm assuming by recommending that I monitor core temps you are referring to "Computer" and "Sensors" under Everest correct?

I do like this program. The registration pop-up every 2 minutes is unbelievably annoying though. Not yet sure if I want to drop $30 for the full version.

Going to try this one tonight...

This one failed to work for me. Upon start it said something like "Failed to load driver". Then did not report on the core temps at all. Running Vista-32.

Anyhow, thanks again for the links and the advice.

Getting rid of Intel audio Studio

I had to unistall the drivers and install Microsoft's HD Driver to get my sound to work properly, but Intel audio Studio has no uninstall option. Now every time I start up Vista I get a error. Anyone know how to uninstall the Intel audio Studio?

You should see 3 CPU temps. One that's just "CPU" which is the diode on the substrate, and 2 "Core" temps which read the digital sensors on each of the cores. It's the "core" temps that are crucial.

It'll be the best $30 you ever spent. They are great folks to deal with: extraordinarily responsive to bugs and feature requests.

Go to Control Panel / Windows Defender / Tools / Software Explorer / Startup Programs and delete it's entry. Next go to Program Files and delete or rename the directory.

OK, thanks for the info. I may end up purchasing it. It seems very comprehensive.

The first feature request I will make if I end up buying it is to limit the pop-up reminder to at least every 30 minutes.

I have a question regarding the sound. I currently have a home theatre 5.1 and I used it before to connect to a Creative card in my XP machine. I was just trying now to use the integrated audio in the BX2 with my home theatre, but I only get sound in 2 speakers. Any idea why?

You only installed the drivers and did not setup the intel studio software. It has all of the "feature" needed to make it 5/1 7/1, etc...

hmm, do you have a link to what I was supposed to download? I remember installing a Sigmatel software, but it looks very basic.

Vista has everything needed to run the internal audio. No need for separate drivers or intel audio studio. In fact, if you do an upgrade of XP to Vista without removing the Intel Audio Studio and the Sigmatel drivers, the audio will get messed up.

Not sure why Intel just release a package for Vista.

The HDD LED staying on was fixed after 2333 but the watchdog was also introduced which doesn't work well.

I didn't have any external USB devices connected at the time this thing kept hanging on soft reset boot.

I've upgraded to the latest bios from 2333 and no longer have this issue for those interested.

    speaking of audio...
if my case only has AC97, am I going to have troubles using the front audio?

i believe there are drivers for this, but im scared to use them now, due possible conflicts with Vista32...

    what are others doing?
