This was obviously a joke from the start because anyone with basic hard drive knowledge would know that the second he cracked the seal on that puppy it was trashed all it takes is a single dust particle...
yeah, older hard drives aren't affected as much, i popped the cover on a 1 gig drive and booted windows 95 while i watched the read/write head, it worked for several days until i got bored and destroyed it for the magnet

I was reading a review once where a guy opened up a hard drive inside a ziplock bag and custom cut a plexi window into it.
Unfortunately this did not work for 2 reasons:
The first is that he messed with something he shouldn't have, because 20 minutes after he spun it back up one of the heads crashed into the platters.
The second is that even if that had not happened, EMI inside the case would have eventually wiped out all the data on the drive through that plexi panel. You have any idea how long it took WD to perfect the window on the raptor X to be both stylish/seethrough and protect the data?
Out of the m,ost delicate components inside of our PC's, I think that the hard drive takes the top 3.

That may have worked. Althought I can't say for sure.
I never read too in depth into the subject but before WD finally pulled it off with the raptor X, companies were having real rpbolems with this because they couldn't get the right balance of EMI shielding/transparency.
They either added just enough material to the plexi to where the transparency wasn't compromised only to find out that the long term effect was still data loss, or added the right amount to shiled the data and in turn lost so much transparency on the window that it defeated the purpose of having one in the first place.
Also, is it just me or does the guy in the pictures above remind you of a concentration camp victim the way his tendons bulge through his skin?
